I inherited a pretty beefy Alienware Ryzen 9 gaming rig last week. It included an ultrawide curved monitor and an oculus rift S. Normally I'd be ecstatic (52 yrs old, and I've never even tried VR goggles whatsoever!) but due to the circumstances I haven't even hooked everything up yet, I'm not really bothered. I'm sure that feeling will pass with time, but for now...meh.

That just sounds....extremely wrong.
It's strange that booted the 1st time and then stopped. The debug leds looked ok, the vga was on as there wasn't an external gpu and without memory the dram led. Maybe a speaker will help if there is a beep error code. One think I'd try is to clean the cpu socket, ram slots, pcie slots as well cpu and ram contacts with IPA or even better Perfects Universal Degreaser. Another thing is to reset BIOS with the reset jumper, for newer systems it will take a few minutes to boot and maybe they will auto powercicle.
In this case you should take out the motherboard, test it, clean it, reseat CPU, switch RAM & RAM channels, and try to reflash the bios. I have seen worse motherboards coming back to life.
Well Nzxt do prebuilt, but this is not a typical prebuilt. This is a part by part build.
@victorbart Check voltages on the coils nearby CPU, PCH, RAM... If they are present, press caps lock button and check if its diode lights up or not. If it doesn't and above voltages are present, most likely bios issue, so it's worth to give a shot, find the manual and figure out how to recover bios... Sometimes gaming mobos has a spare BIOS chip which you can activate using a little switch on the mainboard... It should be somewhere nearby SIO controller., eventually sometimes you can reflash BIOS from USB strick if PC doesn't post... It is possible that BIOS has a problem with initalistan... SPI chips are like SSDs - they have some r/w cycles after which they dies, so it is possible that simply bios is corrupted, therefore you can visit pc workshop which fixes laptops - they will be able to fix that issue much cheapper then new motherboard... Even you can fix it and still resale it for pretty good profit... Eventually if u own a raspberry pi, you can even reflash chip using raspbery pi and then visit any electronics workshop to solder it on - every single one should have hotair station on stock, so no problem...
Ive had more issues with Msi motherboards than any other brand. I had two dead z370 boards and a dead b360 as well. A few older ones died on me as well. Some of their higher end newer stuff is fine but Ive also had an awful overheating GPU from Msi, their RX 6700 XT Mech. That thing ran way hotter than it should have, and I repasted it like 3 times. Anyway hopefully you can at least get the i7-8700K working, and that case + PSU are really nice for free
My boss has this case. The blue bracket that covers up the cable management opening to the right of the RAM slots blocked his usb 3 header, we had to remove the bracket entirely so that cable could plug in, I guess a right angle adapter would have solved it, but it wasn't worth the trouble. Maybe the previous owner had the wifi card in the lower slot because he had a big GPU and wanted it away from it.

Might not be the board, but I am ALWAYS skeptical of MSI parts, they have not treated me well in the 19 years I have dealt with their products. I will still buy them but they are nowhere near my first choice. We had old machines in the mid to late 2000's that were running Biostar and MSI boards, and both brands had a habit of having voltage regulators failing and on more than one occasion we had ram stick with literal burnt chips and traces, I just wish phone cameras where common back then, I would have documented all of it. But even recently I had a co-worker about 6 years back with a 4th gen Intel box with an MSI board and the southbridge on the machine literally went up in smoke.

Ah yes the Intel Core i7 8700K is a 6 core /12 thread Coffee Lake CPU :), yea seems the mobo is kind of damaged, could be anything, a recap could fix it but just not worth doing that for this random stuff.

That motherboard is not dead or broken, you need to flash bios by bios flash back or adapter, second thing you should do is to pull out ram memory and clean it with gumb eraser, and if won"t boot up again you have the problem with cpu, try another one, and before all of this that pc need to be 100% cleaned :)
RGB is not euqal to gaming, unless you are a kid and performance doesn't matter 😂
