Tecmo World Wrestling (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Tecmo's 1990 wrestling game for the NES, Tecmo World Wrestling.
In this video I play through the entire single-player mode with Dr. Guildo.
If you were to conduct a survey asking NES fans about their favorite wrestling game on the 8-bit console, I imagine that two names would quickly float to the top of the list. One would be Nintendo's Pro Wrestling ( • Pro Wrestling (NES) Pl... ), released in 1987, and the other would be the game featured in this video, Tecmo's World Wrestling.
Pro Wrestling didn't have a licensed roster of superstars to lean on, instead winning fans over with its imaginative line-up of fictional fighters, fast action, intuitive controls, and its fantastic multiplayer mode.
Tecmo took a similar approach with their game, giving players their choice of ten flamboyant personalities (loosely based on real life wrestlers) who each have access to a large pool of easy-to-use moves including multiple strikes, throws, holds, and finishers. The controls are simple and rely a bit much on button-mashing, but there's plenty enough depth to the gameplay to keep you coming back for more as you learn how to effectively use each wrestler.
The game is as much fun to watch as it is to play, too. Tecmo's games were well-known for their cinematic flair, and Tecmo World Wrestling is no exception. The in-game characters are large and fairly well animated, the arena is appealingly gaudy and bright, the story sequences will instantly feel familiar to anyone who has played Ninja Gaiden or Tecmo Super Bowl, sportscaster "Tom Talker" provides nonstop running commentary along the bottom of the screen, and finishing moves are all accompanied by flashy animated cutscenes. Suffice it to say, Tecmo World Wrestling is a good looking NES game. It sounds pretty good, too - the music carries that signature Tecmo sound, and all of it is catchy. I especially loved the Ninja Gaiden-style mix of Fly Me To The Moon that plays for the first few matches.
Tecmo World Wrestling has aged surprisingly well - far better than its WWF-branded contemporaries - and it's a game that's easy to jump into and to have fun with right away, whether you've played it before or not. If you liked Pro Wrestling, you're sure to find a lot to like here, too.

NintendoComplete (www.nintendocomplete.com/) punches you in the face with in-depth reviews, screenshot archives, and music from classic 8-bit NES games! - Hry
Hands down the best NES wrestling game that doesn't get talked about that much.
I agree
but no starman
@@kidkiqueThat's okay because it has Dr. Guildo.
Yup agreed!! I Woolf always talk about this one!!
Hell yeah!
"He's creating a human neck warmer with the Argentine back breaker!" Any game that features dialog like that is 👍 in my book.
"It's doomsday for the skull."
Yeah, this game's a winner.
I remember trying so hard to play this game while reading the commentary at the same time. Tom Talker is most definitely a legend.
I had a lot of fun playing this game with old friends one time my friend had a habit of circling outside the ring to what time's almost up and then jumping back in So what I did was I jumped off the top rope landed on him he got counted out!😂
It’s so criminal that this game is so damn underrated such an awesome game overall
For me, it's WCW Wrestling, Tecmo Wrestling and Pro Wrestling as the best NES Wrestling games. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Round and round and round he goes. Where he stops nobody knows.
That is old school classic right there.
Cant believe I missed this game as a kid! This is incredible!
It really is, you ought to give it a go.
@@NintendoCompleteAgreed
Same here. I had Pro Wrestling which was really good, but didn’t know anything about this one.
Better play-by-play announcing than from any current Madden game right now.
I had this game as a child. Was nice.
Tecmo had a way of making the world look so big.
Best NES wrestling game BY FAR. The graphics, the animations, the moves...training between matches. There's even a commentator (which you could make hilarious dialog with custom character names lol). This was a masterpiece for NES
Best wrestling game on the NES! Can you imagine if WWF would have had a partnership with Tecmo instead of LJN, that would have been amazing! 😊
And instead of Acclaim too?
I would’ve went crazy!!! Or even WCW
@@freddyvidz Instead of Beam Software?
@@freddyvidz The WCW game on NES (Road Warriors on the cover) is pretty good, though. Second best wrestling game on the Nintendo. 😊
@@ArMartz what did they make
I get goosebumps watching the cinematic flow of the Argentina back breaker. Simply incredible.
I'm starting up my own NES collection. This is a must own for me. I spent countless hours playing this game as a kid.
Gotta love those Tecmo cinematics.
If there was something that Tecmo truly excelled at, it was the sports games. Shame they stopped making them.
Same with their “Captain Tsubasa” games and “Bad News Baseball.” Not to mention “Tecmo Bowl.”
I, for one, loved "Tecmo Cup Soccer Game," which was "Captain Tsubasa" with American translation and characters.
3:30 that computer got ROCKED
This game has a special place in my heart. I played it all the time as a kid. Also, after Hana Kimura died, a friend of mine and I learned how to play a few songs from this game on guitar, bass, etc and we recorded and released it on her birthday. I wrote a giant prologue about her and why I chose this game's music as a tribute.
That's an awesome story.
@@justafanofnerdculture7602 wow. almost a year later and the story lives on!
Best wrestling game on nes
Man, watching this game reminds me of how Tecmo sure knowing how to make crazy cool games back in the day. They made this, and also _Tecmo Super Bowl_ , which ambitiously featured accurate data on every single NFL team roster, IIRC. Talk about passionate dedication to quality!
This, Bad News Baseball and Tecmo Super Bowl are games that never get old.
I agree completely! I also remember that Rex Beat made a cameo in Bad News Baseball too. 😄
Tecmo had clear, creative things they were trying to accomplish with this one, much like Ninja Gaiden. Even if this isn't the best NES wrestling game ever, they tried to bring you in an audience. Dynamic angles, play-by-play (evena s text, it's at least as good as the spoken announcers in early PS1 games in terms of line variation), catchy jingles for each situation, brief training segments.
Also, shout-outs to "Hammer Whip" as merging of the more American nomenclature of "Irish Whip" and the usually Japanese call of "Hammer Throw"!
It is the best NES wrestling game, by a country mile in fact.
Pro Wrestling was the earliest and most accessible but Tecmo World Wrestling is way up there among greatest NES wrestling titles. Between the training, the commentary, the cutscenes, etc., this game had some really novel features.
The music that plays for the fourth to the sixth matches is the opening song of the anime Tiger Mask.
I used to have this game for the original Nintendo. That game was given to me on my 17th birthday in 1994.
Tecmo had some real gems back in the day.
Man, I remembered playing and loving a wrestling game on NES as a kid, but I couldn't remember which one, and none of them looked quite right.
The main things I remembered was that it wasn't "real" wrestlers, but that I still liked them, and that when you thought you beat the game, that the lights went out, and some powerful, "dark", masked wrestler came out.
After seeing this I thought it was a little different, where it showed the whole ring go dark, and then the guy appeared, more cinematically, because I remembered it being really epic, but I'm guessing that was just my imagination or something... It's gotta be this game.
Oh no the music. Is stuck in my mind.
One of the best on the NES for sure
I remember borrowing this game from my class mate when I was 8 years old back in -96. Didn't remember the name of the game anymore so I had to do some digging to finally find this piece. I had myself Wrestlemania and in it you couldn't exit the ring or anything else in that matter. But this Pro Wrestling seemed to have it all in those days. The ringside was open and the gym option was an awesome never seen before detail for me which has been my strongest memory about this game. I think now once I found this forgotten jewl I won't forget the name ever again 🤩
Cool, Strong Bad is in this game
Loved this game back in the day but couldn’t beat it.
I almost beat it in the early 90's with a python 2 turbo stick but got my arse kicked by B. King.
I finally managed to beat some 30+ years later on an emulator using an xbox pad with turbo on lol.
Thee greatest wrestling game ever made as well as the greatest wrestling game made for the NES.
Music on this was amazing
Whether it was TECMO Super Bowl, or TECMO World Wrestling, the folks at TECMO knew how to create a proper ending that made a championship feel like a big emotional accomplishment. 7 years later, EA was giving gamers a single image of a few players standing on the field after a Super Bowl win.
That giant swing is Cesaro approved! 😁
Most of the wrestlers seemed to be based on real guys. Guildo looks like Vader. Akira is Inoki, Tigre is Tiger Mask, Chekov is Stan Hansen, Rose seems like a prissier Flair(or maybe Yuda from Fist of the North Star?)
Yes, Rose is loosely based on Flair. Gordon is loosely based on Thesz, Jackie Lee on Choshu, Julio is allegedly based on Hogan, Gomez is like a black Harley Race, and the boss is loosely based on Super Machine.
It was pretty common for the characters in Japanese wrestling games from the '80s and '90s to be based on guys who were well known there at the time. I think just about every one of them had at least an Inoki, Vader and Hansen look-a-like on the roster.
Also, Rex Beat is clearly based on Road Warrior Animal.
32:06 Ladies and gentlemen, this is our main event of the evening! The following contest is scheduled for one fall--with a 7-minute time limit--and is for the Tecmo World Wrestling Championship of the World!
This is still my favorite wrestling game lol. El Tigre was my favorite I loved his northern lights suplex
I loved this game when I was a kid ! But I played with Nes Advantage with turbo enabled, huhu, too easy :)
I’m surprised Mat Mania and Exciting Hour weren’t been ported to the nes. That game and Wrestlefest are the best wrestling arcade games .
The commentary at the bottom is so clever....i can't believe i missed this one!
I came for the back brain kick and stayed for the round and round.
Best wrestling game on the console and better than many arcade ones I've played. It is taxing on the A & B buttons, though I'd advise against any turbo controller since it will make the whole thing a piece of cake.
P.S. Guildo and Chekov are cheaters with their giant swing! But they'll save you some button mashing. Thanks for the playthrough!
Better than w2k22
Cap
This was an awesome game. Definitely the best wrestling game on the NES. Could create wrestlers too. Superb.
I played this when I was younger all with so much fun.
I always took dr. Guildo. This is the best wrestling videogame ever.
Inoki theme at background
Now THAT is my way of thinking!
You're playing as Strong Bad.
Still have that game
Woooooooo! A way better version of wrestlemania for the nes by a mile! I love this game, It's just perfection!
This is the wrestling game that is actually pretty good.. I played it a lot 👍👍👍👍👍
This game really needed a sequel or a Super Nintendo upgrade!
B. King enters when the arena goes dark...Brody King perhaps?
My fingernails are still on fire from kicking out
Damn. I had forgotten this game. My brother and our friends loved beating the shit out of each other with this game.
Love this game!!
Outstanding video.
Tecmo Wrestling, Pro Wrestling, M.U.S.C.L.E. and WWF. I had all of them as a kid, but I was too young to figure out what to do. I think I got lucky and won a couple rounds in M.U.S.C.L.E. . But that's about it.
THAT IS VERY GOOD AND AWESOME AND COOL TOO MY FRIEND
Funyn thing, on the PAL version the music is much much faster. Usually due to PAL version running slower than NA games, they're slightly slower.
Tecmo decided to speed up the music a lot in the PAL version though, so I feel liek the music's going on slow-mo here. Also, they swapped the Title Screen and 2 Player match theme.
Well played, though. 1 Palyer mode tends to be really annoying because at one point in a match the game just goes "Okay, ALL of the AI moves go through and you don't get to do anything."
I had to buy this game twice from wearing the fuggg out frfr…loved this!!!!! So much better than any Wwf or wcw game…Mat Mania in the arcade was awesome too!!
yeah my favorite charater and still one of the best wrestling games to date. Alwso for renameing the character the sky is the limits no ceansorship so feel free to make swear words and dirty words for the name of your characters
Numero Uno! well done!!!!
This was my joint
Major CLASSIC
Love the witty comments and the "round and round and round he goes" thing. And I just couldn't believe you lost, but that's alright.
Gran juego. Demoré en aprender los movimientos especiales. Las últimas dos peleas son realmente difíciles. Me encantó.
It was my favorite game too back in the day, anything tecmo kicked the crap out of other sports games. When an old friend had a bad habit of running out the clock outside the ring, so I jumped off the top rope and flattened him and got back in the ring just as time ran out.😂😂😂
had this as a kid and prowrestling my 2 go to games i didnt play the wwf gamesmuch for nes or the wcw game never played the snes wcw game until emulation and same way w gameboy one
The best wrestling game. That's it.
Tecmo won the 90s. Hands down.
Ill never can uderstand this game
Excellent gameplay bro 😏👉👉
Classic game 😁👍
i always loved this game but absolutely hated the fact you could put them in a submission hold with no energy but never could get them to submit.
i once names the character Dr Dildo by mistake when i was a kid and then was playing this game and my mother came downstairs to do the laundry and watched me play the game and got grounded for the name. it was a honest mistake mom.
The only truly german opponent (M.Rose) doesn't have german suplex in his move roster. Ironic...
Here is your winner and NEEEEWWWW… wait - ladies and gentlemen I have just been informed that the title cannot change hands on a count out which means the loser of this bout but STILLLLLLLL TWW world champion, BLUUUUEEEEE KIIIING!
This game was great, the problem however was the power levels. Because it was segmented as normal game where each opponents became stronger and because it wasn't randomized, it meant that out of the 10 playable characters, the strongest by far was Dr. Guildo" that you see being played here.
Go try beating the game with A.Dragon and see how much harder it is than doing it with Guildo. 🤣
But I remember playing this game, defeating the final boss on my first try not through grit, but through sheer luck. The boss smacked me around the ring and proceeded to beat me up throughout the whole match. I got maybe one or two punched in on him... then I ended up outside of the ring, getting completely destroyed, managed by sheer luck do a piledriver on the boss and then roll inside the ring. The boss bounced up and went in after me, only he got counted out as he was in the middle of getting into the ring XD
I did manage to beat him fair and square several times later though as I played through the game again.
Ah... the memories.
Also I really have to add that, is it me or the title screen of tecmo world wrestling sounds awfully simular to the beginning of Phil Collins, easy lover? 🤣
We're all in agreement that this character's name is "Dr. Dildo" right?
Also, little bit over ambitious on Tecmo's part making the Wins and Losses go to 3 places... Did they foresee a lot of people wanting to play this "fast paced and not at all boring" game so much that the Wins and Losses may enter triple digits?😅
I thought Nintendo's Pro Wrestling didn't come out until 1987. It is a black box game though.
Ah my bad, I was thinking the Japanese version. Thanks.
@@NintendoComplete this game was released in 1989 in america even CZcams showed it correctly what you said it's japanese version
Would like to see someone create a hack adding more commentary from the announcer.
Nintendo switch has that nintendo classic app and this game is not included. wtf -.-
Lets hope VinceMcMahon didn't see this.
Minute 9:00 🔥
I loved this game
The constant slinging the opponent out of the ring got old pretty quick too
These guys sell worse than the kids in AEW lol
I have to be the worst button-masher in the world; I never won matches against the CPU in this game. Or is there another element to the strategy?
I think A. Dragon is dead. 😂
No psychology or story-telling. No selling or playing to the crowd. Just a ton of spots and false finishes. That's today's wrestling for you.
This was a good game for the time but we all expected a classic like Tecmo Bowl. Same with Tecmo NBA. It was a very good game but we expected legendary status. Any Tecmo sports game is good. Baseball came out before Tecmo Super Bowl so it was spared the comparison but isn't it weird a Japanese company made a legendary football game and mediocre baseball game? They love baseball and football is a minor sport there.
Not sure what you're getting at. This game is a classic.
