Its not hard to figure out. Its about OPTIMIZATION. Not cause of anything Sony did. The PS5 has way more install base. So devs optimize for the PS5 natively FIRST and then port it over to Series X/S with minimal time spent in true native optimization.
Cerny's choice for narrower (fewer CUs) GPU in PS5 was to give game dev's more direct path to full utilization of the GPU, since the SoC can be clocked higher. Not all shader kernels can provide work for all the compute units in the GPU and this can lead to under-utilization, if there's no possibility to engage async execution. Exception is ray-tracing, where any BVH uber-shader will eat as many CUs as there are available.
When u intentionally work out and intentionally wear a "muscle shirt" from the 80s for a tech video. "U can be in the gym all day, u still gon' get hit with this .40."
I said this a long time ago, It's split memory pool that hurts it's performace which I find pretty Ironic cuz the memory pool on the Ps3 's RSX gpu were split also which hampered its performance, especially in multiplats.
Having enough bandwidth to get data to and from the CPU and GPU is a huge requirement. My gut instinct for the problem with the VEGA architecture was that it was able to get data to the shaders but didn’t have enough ROP performance to handle the load coming from the CUs. This is why it was great for compute but lagged in graphics performance. This is also why they were able to make major performance improvements on the APU implementations. It would have been interesting to see a standalone GPU that was based on the final architecture used by the APUs. You had 8 CUs significantly outperforming the original 11 CU version. That’s around a 40% improvement. And the CUs were 1/2 the transistor count of Navi. In the end, I think it was a great mobile architecture at the very least because it was so small.
Paul is a beast fr. I went back to some older vids and I think he's always just been a sleeper build, wearing oversized shirts to hide the monster body hahaha... Also realizing paul and the ps5 are both sleeper builds in the end. Sony kept saying not to focus on TFlops back during build up to release, guess they were right.
I’ve been saying it since the beginning. Mark Cerny is a smart guy, and he knows how to leverage the given hardware to make the most of it. His explanation during the deep dive, and how Teraflops comparison doesn’t tell the full story. A lot of people, especially Xbox fans were quick to dismiss my comment and screamed *12 teraflops and wait for a year and it will wipe the floor of PS5.* The end results speaks for themselves.
Graphics and sound don't have much longer to go to look fully CGI and to sound like you're there, We need to focus more on physics and interactivity in games, objects, people, weather,ECT. I also believe that with how everything is going digital, to keep people interested in the games, games will go episodic just like tv shows. You'll get a new episode of a game each month as long as you're subscribed.
Actually, Digital Foundry explained it last year after talking to quite a few devs. It's very simple and not tech-related at all - devs simply optimize it better for the leading console, as it makes more sense. On top of that, a ton of Xbox features are not even used, despite also being on PC. The big one, in my opinion, is Sampler Feedback, which was supposed to help with memory use, especially on Series S. But Velocity Architecture is also up there, I would say. And I for one, think that this is sad, really. Beause of that, not only the experience on Xbox is worse, but, by extension, the experience on PC is much worse.
Cerny is a genius, people laughed at him and the PS5 when be did his tech talk but anyone with sense knew this guy has created a Ferrari of consoles, a well oiled machine I bet the PS5 Pro has some nice tricks up it's sleeve too otherwise Cerny wouldn't bother
When it comes to port optimization, it isn't just about time, it's also about the likely amount of business the port is expected to produce. If putting off th release date on all platforms meant a lot more business from better ports, the devs would be given that month. But secondary versions of a game generally don't reward that investment in the opinion of those dictating the budgets, both financial and time. The PS4 Pro and Xbox One X made for nice demos but neither had an installed base that justified realizing their full potential, especially as entirely new hardware was looming on the horizon. So they were worth having for affluent gamers but were never going to receive the optimization investment needed to be fully utilized. Much the same has happened for the Xbox Series X. For most publishers who aren't Microsoft, boosting the platform by going the extra mile on optimization just isn't in the budget for a platform in a distant second place for the high end market. (Nintendo doesn't really factor in there as they've succeeded by not joining that battle and focusing on reaching their market by other routes of appeal. There are few gamers who view owning a Switch as eliminating the need for either a PS5 or Series X. If the money isn't a concern, owning both an F-150 and a Porsche is not redundant.)
Damn I haven’t watch your videos in months due to work and finally have and noticed you’ve gotten physically jacked! Congratulations on your physical improvements!
He was always jacked. He just have been hiding it in over sized shirts. Look back at old videos and you will see the same outline, now that you know what you are looking at.
The performance difference doesn’t seems huge. Sure we can say a game that was release for XBOX and PS5, runs a little better in PS5 than XBOX, but it’s not like large difference. And from what I can tell, it’s due to Sony using lower level APIs… which by design suppose to give you faster performance; but it doesn’t mean higher level API and middleware API is stupid either. The reasons why companies invented and uses higher level APIs is to sacrifice a little performance for wider compatibility as a platform. Especially when a software is targeted to run one multiple devices of different hardware. (My guess is to run on Series S and Series X). For a sacrifice in performance it does make sense for MS engineers to use this approach versus Sony. This also means, porting the same game build for XBOX would be easier to port to Windows, provided MS provides the same API libraries in Windows as in XBOX. This would also mean for PS5 exclusive games to be ported to Windows, the developers would have to fill the gap of capability from using that lower level API that is exclusive to PS, and not Windows/PC. My hypothesis is that XBOX games from the original XBOX through XBOX One were developed using these higher API model, so, it was easier to create virtual environments to be “backward compatible” with those games on their current gen system. And similarly, current gen XBOX games would run without a lot of work in future XBOX console generations. This could be millions of dollars of costs savings in developing and porting work in the future (when using higher level APIs).
in other words ps5 is more "optimized" on a low level basis. direct x is more general purpose which allows it to scale for lots of hardware but at the cost of overhead.
What's happening with the voice in this video? It's ok until he goes a little low and then it's like "...McAaaaaaaallister... The Faaaaaatheeer" from Home Alone 2
But why shader compiler is even mentioned? Doesnt supposed that consoles has precompiled shaders because they are fixed hardware? Are they compilling shaders on runtime or what? Why will shader compiller hit perf?
This at the devs stage of the game, not the end user. It doesn't matter if the target is static, if the produced code is less efficient it hits every time the game is run. Producing that type of code by hand is not within the skill set of most developers, so if the same high level code leads to inferior binaries on a platform, that penalty will always be there.
Thats all cool but my ps5 keeps having probs like its a tempremental thing its started doing the green and black screen thingy havent been able to turn it on for days
the real reason is because they have to build their game to run on series S as well as X THE end....a few devolpers muttered about it and MS told them STFU and not mention it
the PS5 outperforms the series X because the series S exists...the series S is why this generations graphics have been mediocre in most games. Series S was the worst thing xbox could do this generation. If you have to build games for the lowest spec it drags them all down. Hopefully next gen they don't pull this crap
Not even the Tflops diffrence would warrant calling the dealta significant. The PS5 is a more efficient machine...it is better designed as a gaming console.
Not trying to be a smartass or anything but the compiler for the gpu is software based not hardware. Sony's in house custom compiler software is faster than the Xbox Series X direct x C++ compiler. It isnt about hardware. The Xbox Series X does out perform the Ps5 in some titles that love compute and memory width. The Ps5 does better in titles that prefer clock speed. That said the software compiler differences favor Sony along with it being the higher selling platform.
my question is how come ps 5 and x box series x using the same hardware like similer gpu, processor and ram size??? whos leaking the blue prints to microsoft
I own a PS5 and would love to think that it regularly matches or outperforms Xbox. However Xbox has it all over Sony in terms of VRR, there are many games that run smoother because of the lower frame rate threshold. I would trade a lot of the things he's talking about for my BRR to be able to go down I would trade a lot of the things he's talking about for my VRR to be able to go down to 40 instead of 48
Game Dev here... This video is full of assumptions, lies and misguidance. If narrower gpus were so great then why does a 4090 even exist? They should just have something like a 4060 clocked at 6 GHz then right? It'll solve everything. Why is PS5 Pro so wide then? OOPS. They should have stuck to the same 36cu and just clocked it at 5 GHz 🙄 Clock speed only makes lightly threaded work go faster on a narrow chips. Aka traditional rendering in older engines. Compute makes everything go faster if targeted and GPU led. This is why every single UE5 title to date performs better on Xbox series X because Nanite is mostly compute. That will continue. Older engines have not made the switch. That is where gpus are headed, not higher clock speed and narrow chips In addition to that, majority of games are still better on Xbox Series X over PS5. Whether that's higher resolution, better frame rate or more frame rate options. The only thing that you're kind of right about is the compiler which you got from digital foundry. I'm currently having trouble with that. Compiler and amplification shaders for work graphs. The fanboyism on Twitter knows no bounds... Come on man I expected better from you, especially after the Moore's law is dead nonsense. But you never learn...
I have a ps5 and a series x. I love my ps5 and i will try to be the least biased i can here. In all honesty performance wise i can almost not tell a difference. The color pallet on ps5 on my monitor is better out of the box. But once i tweek my xbox color settings, its the same damn thing. Only game i have that runs better is the elden ring, not even the full game just the dlc runs slightly better on ps5. Wtf I feel like this dude was pudgy and nerdy af when I discovered his channel in the lead up to this gen. Holy crap talk about a MAJOR transformation. Maybe I was trippin and he was never pudgy? Dude I’m seriously impressed and legitimately kinda inspired rn. I lost a bunch of weight recently (never been fat, but was overweight). Now I’m just getting thinner but totally not in shape and it’s kinda pathetic. I’m legit inspired rn
Go hit the gym yo!
He was always jacked. He just have been hiding it in lose shirts.
Look back at older videos and you will see the same outline, now that you know what you are looking at.
And start working out dude, it feels just as epic as it look to be powerful and fit af.
The Cherno had some pretty good breakdown on Mark Cerny’s Road to PS5.
Its not hard to figure out. Its about OPTIMIZATION. Not cause of anything Sony did.
The PS5 has way more install base. So devs optimize for the PS5 natively FIRST and then port it over to Series X/S with minimal time spent in true native optimization.
Why does ps5 have larger install base? Ground gained from legacy of PS4 vs X1 maybe?
This the dumbest thing I ever heard, ps5 uses a different API, the devs can make a game for ps5 and PC and port the PC version to Xbox.
You're literally just crying Xbox fanboy tears, go and watch DF's video also to see how you're talking rubbish
@@wayneg85 sounds like the PlayStation fanboy is feeling threatened.
@@guardianali I've got both consoles you're just crying salty Xbox tears and talking rubbish quite evidently
Which is why the X seems to do a bit better in the RT department. But honestly both machines are similar.
@@NightWanderer31415 Sure but there are no games that have better RT on XSX compared to PS5 with Spiderman 2.
@@byte-bg4obboth consoles have garbage RT.
When u intentionally work out and intentionally wear a "muscle shirt" from the 80s for a tech video. "U can be in the gym all day, u still gon' get hit with this .40."
If you mean out performing with lower base resoultion then yes it is. Xbox in general run higher rez but can often drop frames as result...
I said this a long time ago, It's split memory pool that hurts it's performace which I find pretty Ironic cuz the memory pool on the Ps3 's RSX gpu were split also which hampered its performance, especially in multiplats.
As well as the api
Paul showing off them gains 💪
A lot of people, especially Xbox fans were quick to dismiss my comment and screamed *12 teraflops and wait for a year and it will wipe the floor of PS5.*
The end results speaks for themselves.
He was always built, he just had big t-shirts
It's great watching "over the top" Paul 😂 just turn the hat backwards like flipping a switch
Bro looks like Kazuya from Tekken 8 yes…
The most jacked computer tech guy Ive seen. Benching the 4090's man lol
I have always suspected that Paul was really ripped and he was even beefier than I suspected. Awesome build!
Paul doesn't mow is lawn he just walks out and dares it to grow 😂😂looking fit bro 💪
Cerny is a genius, people laughed at him and the PS5 when be did his tech talk but anyone with sense knew this guy has created a Ferrari of consoles, a well oiled machine
I bet the PS5 Pro has some nice tricks up it's sleeve too otherwise Cerny wouldn't bother
😂😂😂 you people are delusional
@@GoHardOrGoHome85 Facts clearly prove you're very much wrong, Xbox fanboy by any chance
I watched "the road to PS5" so much that my eyes and ears are now jacked
and now we're seeing news saying exactly the opposite: even series S is beating the PS5....

Damn Paul, I had no idea you were so strong and fit. I needed some inspiration.
Damn red tech buff as hell. Put a shirt on haahah😂
Holy shite, I thought he was fat but he's buffed af 😮
in other words ps5 is more "optimized" on a low level basis. direct x is more general purpose which allows it to scale for lots of hardware but at the cost of overhead.
Another advantage for PS5 are the high clocks on GPU they always favor performance than multi-cores at low clock speed.
The ps5 is running mostly upgraded last gen games.Lets see how an unreal engine 5 games runs on it oh yea we did it runs like crap
ripped paul
Are you using a voice changer? Can detect a little deepening.
Thats all cool but my ps5 keeps having probs like its a tempremental thing its started doing the green and black screen thingy havent been able to turn it on for days
the real reason is because they have to build their game to run on series S as well as X THE end....a few devolpers muttered about it and MS told them STFU and not mention it
Paul! How many years of training?
Because the Xbox has a super bloated cumbersome OS
The answer is simple...
XBox use Windows and DirectX.
Bro we're here for the muscles. Good work
Good to see Paul working out.
PS5 is about 6 times faster than XBOX SERIES X where it counts.
Can we have the workout routine in the next video please?
the PS5 outperforms the series X because the series S exists...the series S is why this generations graphics have been mediocre in most games. Series S was the worst thing xbox could do this generation. If you have to build games for the lowest spec it drags them all down. Hopefully next gen they don't pull this crap
Anyone believe Amarta is this guy's drag alter ego?
Not even the Tflops diffrence would warrant calling the dealta significant. The PS5 is a more efficient machine...it is better designed as a gaming console.
When you respec your char and put all points in strengh...
was thinking about this in the should last night
Not trying to be a smartass or anything but the compiler for the gpu is software based not hardware. Sony's in house custom compiler software is faster than the Xbox Series X direct x C++ compiler. It isnt about hardware. The Xbox Series X does out perform the Ps5 in some titles that love compute and memory width. The Ps5 does better in titles that prefer clock speed. That said the software compiler differences favor Sony along with it being the higher selling platform.
my question is how come ps 5 and x box series x using the same hardware like similer gpu, processor and ram size???
whos leaking the blue prints to microsoft
hey we had a heatwave guys, leave the man alone 💪
OOPS. They should have stuck to the same 36cu and just clocked it at 5 GHz 🙄
Clock speed only makes lightly threaded work go faster on a narrow chips. Aka traditional rendering in older engines.
Compute makes everything go faster if targeted and GPU led. This is why every single UE5 title to date performs better on Xbox series X because Nanite is mostly compute. That will continue. Older engines have not made the switch.
That is where gpus are headed, not higher clock speed and narrow chips
In addition to that, majority of games are still better on Xbox Series X over PS5.
Paul been hiding that 3d V cache
Holy Molly Paul at least left one girl for me.
And mot for nothing but all ps5 exclusives feel like the same game with a differnt coat a paint apart from bloodborne and demon souls.
Are you using HGH? I hope you're aware of the permanent side effects, your voice got deeper and it reminds me of someone I knew with acromegaly. It also will increase your skill size...
I had to check old videos to see if hes been swole all this time...hes been swole for awhile, just never wore a beater. Damn Red, get it
My guy has been in the hyperbolic time chamber. 💪🏼
The switch 2 probably wont even be ps4 level if it is it wont be ps4 pro level
If it were true, it wouldn't need to be explained
In cerny we trust! As long as he keeps designing ps consoles I’ll keep buying them
This admission will leave lots of ppl sore
He’s going to explain while holding you by your throat against a wall 💪👀
I guess I'll throw my X away and pick up PS5 Pro when it comes out.
They should have done just the x series and made it under windows like a normal computer. You should keep wearing what you like, i dont understand the people bashing your sportwear.
Whatttt? Bro was jacked this whole time???
He has been for some time. He just had bad fitting lose t shirt's
Dam yall foos never heard of the gym or wut 😂😂😂
And yet, I did not learn anything new..
