Rain in the Tankwa Karoo (one of the driest parts of South Africa)

- The Tankwa Karoo is one of the driest areas in South Africa with some parts receiving less than 100mm of average rainfall per year. It is also very hot with temperatures regularly rising above 40°C. In fact the mean maximum temperature in January is 38.9°C. The R355 road from Ceres to the park is South Africa’s longest road without a town - after you left Ceres there is no town until you reach Calvinia after more than 250kms!
The Tankwa Karoo National Park is about 4 hours drive from Cape Town. We recently visited and experienced RAIN, which caused a number of wash-aways on the roads. The video also shows what to expect if you choose to stay at the Elandsberg cottages in the park, what the Oudebaaskraal dam looks like when its full, and should give you an idea of the landscape.
The park offers quiet solitude and wide open spaces, as well as some game, but you should not expect a "Big 5" reserve with large numbers of game.

Haha good job on the sound effects
The Karoo region has a charm of its own. I have always loved the quiet and the space, at the times we drove through to the Northwest province. Baie dankie vir die pragtige video.
Yes, my wife always says that from time to time she needs to get to a place where she can look far into the distance.
Baaaaie mooi !!
The colours are exceptional . I like the understatement during Ooberg Pass descent : quite scenic 😂
Thanks!
This was beautiful hey! I spent some months in SA and got absolutely smitten. I read about this place, sadly I was near Joburg and both Karoo and Kalahari parks were too far away for my time frame (Kruger was not, so went multiple times, even that was not enough). Thanks for this video, Karoo is stunning!
It is, but the Kalahari and especially the Kgalagadi transfrontier park is really my favorite. Thanks for the encouragement, I really appreciate it.
Great video, thanks.
Thanks, it was a pleasure to share it.
I was up there on a motorcycle this weekend. had to turn back as the roads were a mess. Im glad you guys got out ok.
Yes, I can imagine it would have been very difficult on a motorcycle. I hope you're OK too.
Hi, just a tip. On some parts of the video the music was a bit too loud drowning out the voice comments. Thanks for sharing the video.
Thanks, will look out for that in future.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video👍 I also feel the music was a spoiler though 🥲
Hi, is it the volume of the music that was the issue, or the kind of music?
@@overlandersa the volume
@@Fergus_Afrique OK, thanks. I will pay more attention to that in future.
Good to see so much rain in that arid region.
Yes, indeed. It was amazing to experience.
Baie mooi video. Ek het sommer huimwee nou. Ek en my vrou was in Tankwa so 4 weke terug vanaf Sutherland verby Middelpos en oornag in Gannaga Lodge. So lekker soos wat my stofpad fiets ry sal ek eerder met my Everest 4x4 in Tankwa ry met daai nat paaie.
Ek stem definitief saam!
Nice video, music too loud though, cant hear you in certain parts.
Sorry about that - I'll pay more attention to than in future
My hart slaap saans daar, maar my lyf in die stad
Dis soos ek oor die Kalahari voel...
@@overlandersa Kgalagadi is altyd bucketlisted by my, al meer as 'n halfeeu lank. Eendag miskien, maar vir nou is my leefwêreld veertien vierkante meter groot. En CZcams neem my oral.
'n rolstoel toeganklik is. Sterkte!
lekker ry ons nou !
Inderdaad!
Wonderlike nuus oor die reën. Sal nou pragtig groen word
'n Mens hoop so.
Good evening. Great Video! I manage the social media for Tankwa Padstal and would like to share your video if you do not mind. Do you have a Facebook Page?
Hi, you are most welcome to share the video. I do not have a Facebook page. Regards.
The music is too loud, it drowns out your voices!
Thanks for pointing that out. I'll pay more attention to the sound balance in future.
Just get rid of the music it detracts from the story. It will save you a lot of effort
Only watched 4 minutes due to owerwelming music
Man o man what I would give to have been there before it all got claimed, privatised and owned.
I often wonder what the more developed parts of South Africa looked like several hundred years ago, before all the developments took place
@@overlandersa there is a painting in the Table Bay hotel that imagines how the Cape flats looked when settlers first arrived....
@@jksinorbit Thanks - the Table Bay hotel is not one of my usual hangouts 🙂, but I'll take a look the next time I'm in the Waterfront.

Sorry, not sure what you mean?
