an eldery person talked about a wire recorder they used to have with me the other day and was simply amazed that not only I knew about them but I knew exactly how it worked, how the reel used to wind the wire up and down (they remembered that it did that when I brought it up and told me how the mechanism worked) and how they looked design wise.
I told them about you and brought your video of your wire recorder up on my phone and they almost cried seeing it again, I stopped what I was doing and we watched it together while they told me stories of her father using it to pirate music off the radio for christmas and he even used to bring it in the car until the wires started to break too much lmaos!
This comment will probably be lost in the mix but I wanted to post it in hopes you'll see it simply because it was a wonderful shared experience for two people of wildly different ages that was entirely and directly thanks to you. :)

I couldn't afford DCC but, for a couple of years before recordable CDs were affordable I used two stereo VHS machines for music recording and playing. Recorded from a CD the sound was much better than a compact cassette.
(I originally bought them for recording 'MTV' type content overnight then dubbing the tracks that I liked together into 'mix tapes' of various genres. I had two AV systems set up at opposite ends of the (big 5 bedroom) house linked together so they played the same thing. It added something to parties when those who wanted to chill could kick back in a quieter room and watch the music videos for the music that was playing throughout the house.)

I saw a CZcams video of it years ago, where someone had to rig up a turntable with an external drive to achieve an approximate 3rpm. It was impossible to determine what the sound quality was because the 'music' itself was just a cacophony of shrieks and yowls, but considering that very slow speed, I imagine the sound quality of even good music would be abysmal.

Thanks for the 8 track mention, Techmoan. I have watched your channel religiously for a few years. I wish you had gotten one of the 12 silver cartridges. Those turned out great. The label tint was kind of a weird light mauve-lavender that didnt seem to look completely amazing with any color cartridge except silver or black. Wish i hadn't thought to do silver carts toward the end of the project, but rather the beginning. Also, should mention that 5 Mark Ronson reel to reel albums are also in existence. One for me, one for Ronson, one for Sony and two for the Columbia UK offices. Was a super fun project, and though the run was only around 50 tapes, it is still kind of a mildly monumemtal event. Though many have released 8 tracks and reels on newer big and small record labels in recent times, this is the first release in those formats by one of the old major record labels in 30 years. Anyone interested in new release 8 tracks and reels, please visit my facebook and instagram pages for if nothing else interesting pics.

I always liked Mini Disc. I had a friend that bought a portable player/recorder back around the time they came out. I just thought it was the coolest thing on Earth. Of course, they never really caught on and I had never gotten around to getting one. I also really liked Sony's UMD format too, though I was well aware that it was DOA pretty much at inception. Especially considering the lack of capacity. But I dug them anyway. The optical format is, for the most part, completely dead. But the concept is one I still find very cool regardless.

Another great video. I really appreciate these and look for more to come...thanks!
I was raised in the 60's and 70's on 45s and LPs and while I miss the idea of having a big thing to show off and the album art and inserts, I am very happy having my thousands of tracks (backed up) all in one place and ready to play at the click of a mouse.
I think the future of music is that it will mostly be given away as the real money is on the road where the artists should (but unfortunately not always) have more control over the gate.
So many great artists were cheated out of their royalties by crocked, creative bookkeeping.
That's harder to do in a concert venue.
