  • I went with my family to the island of Lanzarote (Canary Island, Spain). I tried to make some contacts using my Elecraft KX2 and a random wire and vertical antenna. As location I used the vulcanic area close to Timanfaya. It was a lot of fun to operate QRP at Lanzarote. My Lanzarote trip will be splitted in two episodes. Part 2 is at the top of an vulcano using a telescopic vertical antenna.

    The fun with QRP is you never know what you will get. Some would argue you should of use this and do that better, but walking up a volcano with a KX2 basically in your pocket was waay cool and a contact or two would be just icing on the cake. The adventure and time spent was worth it all Bjorn.. and of course more seafood from Spain. Thanks for sharing.🦀🦐

    Shame no contacts. Looked a great spot. I think your 7.5m speaker wire antenna would be a better bet. I have the SB carbon 6 pole and ground spike. Weighs next to nothing, incredibly small, I run 2x25ft wires like you as per the elecraft kx2 manual. 73 MW0SAW

      I think about an carbon mast. I have to search for an light and small one. For the Lanzarote trip I only alowed of 15kg backage. So you have to think about every kilogramm you want to add.

      @@echopapaqrp8166 understand, its about 300g and approx 40cm long. I don't know of anything lighter/smaller. Ground spike is 166g on the SotaBeams website and 54cm packed down. Always interested to find other solutions but if the ground is soft enough to get a thin spike in, you can be operating in a couple of mins. My 25ft wire just runs down as a sloper. I also carry a couple of large reusable cable ties, which take practically zero space and are great if there is a fence or something to secure the pole. Most of the fibreglass poles are significantly more weight. Looking forward to your next video. 73 MW0SAW

    Great video and great channel! I subscribed to it, as I also own a kx2 and try to experiment with antenna. I think the lack of qso's in this case was a coincidence of many factors, primarily weak propagation coupled with the low power of the rig. Somedays I keep on calling cq even at my base station with 100 watts with very low results. Often operators hear, but do not bother to work with weak signals. But it is fun to play with radios even on such days with no contacts. 73 de R2ARM!

    Too bad you didn't get any contacts, but you got to play radio on top of a volcano. How many hams can say that? By the way, I really like your antenna installation. 73

      Thats right David. It was a lot of fun and my coolest locaton so far. The antenna gets a lot of wind. So I had to fix it to the rock. I was happy that I had the rubberband with me. At all it was a nice ham expirience for me. I heard a lot of stations. 73

    Band conditions? They haven't been great recently..the canaries are kind of remote out there off the African coast..next time try working hf from the beach against the waters edge while eating sea food! Hi!

      I heared some OMs talking about bad conditions. But RX was realy nice. So I expected a little bit more. But it was fun too. To play radio on the top of an vulcano is awesome 😃. I was at Lanzarote with my family. So my radio time was reduced a lot

    It seems like you need fishing pole or fiberglass mast. I also tried this approach but even cw spots did not hear me.

    Did you use a counterpoise with that vertical? Or was it a dipole?

    • @echopapaqrp8166
      @echopapaqrp8166  Před 2 lety +1

      There are 10m of counterpoise on the antenna foot. Without it will not work.
