      I have really been looking at Marvel Champions for about a year and have been teetering on bumping it to the top of the list. If I could hear your feedback on the good and bad, I think it would have some weight. I saw a review on Shut Up and Sit Down that really took the wind out of my sails on this game.

      @thegrouchynerd  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you very much, and I sure hope so!
      I will say this: I saw that review, and I was slightly dismayed that it might do a bit of damage to the growth of the community, but I also didn't disagree with any particular point that Quinns made.
      It's certainly not a perfect game, and in true solo, you can definitely luck into a quick and unfair-feeling loss, or even a win on Round 3. But resetting is fast, so no real harm done there.
      Quinns also doesn't like Marvel stuff. I do. I made fun of FOMO in the video, but the collecting is definitely an aspect of it. Not to say that there's not re-playability in the core box, but I like getting the new characters and seeing the different ways they play. That's, like, an active part of my enjoyment of the game. But that can also get expensive.
      And, of course, the easiest comparison is Arkham Horror the Card Game, which tells an intricate story as your character gets stronger and weaker and decisions you make pay off over the course of several game plays.
      Marvel doesn't do that. There's a pretty lackluster campaign in the big box expansions, but I mostly play randomly, or whoever feels interesting that night.
      Between the two, it's like deciding whether you want to watch an arthouse film that might make you feel kind of gross--but is incredible, or do you wanna see some stuff go boom in the Big Budget Action Flick because you've had a long day and you don't really want to think that hard? There's different times for each.
      Hope this helps and I really appreciate the support!

      @@thegrouchynerd Ha! I made this exact comparison the other day. I also called it gaming comfort food which is the same thing really. I am not much of a Marvel fan, certainly not of the comics, but the game is strong enough to cope with just a bit of thematic input - I think of the Asgardians as mythic gods not superheroes etc. It also feels like a modernised version of the LotR game, which I did enjoy for ages but I had issues with that MC mostly solved (the lacklustre campaigns remain a feature though.)

    • @thegrouchynerd
      @thegrouchynerd  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thank you! Welcome to the game!
      The defense is just in the moment of the attack.
      So, the villain attacks and is boosted, you defend (either with a defense event or exhausting to use your basic defense), and then there’s a player window in which you can play cards that have defend reactions (Counter-punch, as an example).
      But then that’s it. You’re not still defending during the encounter card step. You do remain exhausted if you used your basic, and you’ll stay exhausted until the next upkeep step, or play a card that allows you to ready.

    • @thegrouchynerd
      @thegrouchynerd  Před rokem

      Using allies to take damage for you is a big part of it. And, I know there’s a few cards that can lose it for you in one bad Encounter draw, but sometimes you just have to take a few hits and plan on flipping to Alter-ego to recover every now and then. Remember, too, you don’t have to exhaust to play most of your events, so you should hopefully still have options outside of your basic attack and thwart. Good luck!

    Question #2 of 1000 😂
    So, for Scarlet Witch, for the first part of the obligation Slipping Sanity it says "You may flip to alter ego form, choose: Exhaust Wanda, then remove obligation from the game.
    So my question is: what happens if Wanda is already exhausted and this obligation is drawn? Is the first part not "available" and the second part must be resolved instead?
    And ifcyou dont flip to alter ego form (which is Wanda Maximoff), are you forced to only resolve the second half since you're in hero form and not alter ego?
    I'm probably reading too much into it but the main question was if Scarlet Witch is exhausted already what happens. Thanks. You should probably just do a video. 😂

    My biggest confusion with this game comes from the boost counters. I can never understand anything about the villain turn because of them. Like when a minion is played as an encounter, the game rules pretty much state that whatever their scheme or attack value is for the minion is added into the attack from the villain and then state that the boosts in the corner card are what’s added to the attack. Every tutorial I watch just breezes past that aspect and I just can’t wrap my head around it. Someone explain or correct any confusion I have or am misreading.

    • @thegrouchynerd
      @thegrouchynerd  Před rokem

      When the villain activates, either an attack or scheme, it gets a boost card (some, like Klaw, may get more than one). Flip that card and add the number of boost icons (which are the ones with 3 points) to the value of that attack or scheme, and discard that card. Doesn't matter if it's a minion or a side scheme or whatever, because you're only looking in the corner.
      However, if that boost card has a boost ability (a star), you'll do whatever it says on the card next to the star under the line on the card.
      Then, separate from the boost, you'll draw an encounter card and either resolve it or put into play.
      Does that help?

      You add one threat to the main scheme at the beginning of the Villain Phase, then add one more for each acceleration token or icon on any side schemes.
