Fixing a Skid Steer Mower/Brush attachment

- I did something dumb and broke my new wolverine mower attachment. Don't do what I did: always check for oil and grease!
In this video I am going to try and repair the right angle gearbox.
The damage appears to have been mostly contained to the gearbox, but a few heavy duty bearings have exploded apart and there's a lot of metal chips to clean up.
I have to grind the gears clean of burrs and debris, install new bearings, install new seals, and cover up some rust. I had never rebuilt a gearbox like this before, so like many projects on the farm, this was a learning experience.
Hope you enjoy and learn something new!

Great detail, thank you. Those gears sounded very bad after the repair....it'll be interesting to see how long they last. Hopefully they work themselves together and smooth out like you mentioned.
Probably have about 40 hours on it since the rebuild and so far so good! I took the cap off to inspect and the oil looks new still.
You are much more patient than I. I would be furious to find out that there was no fluid in the box. I will remember this.
As long as this helps at least one person avoid this mistake, then I was successful!
Don’t beat yourself up. I have watched two other videos from reputable guys who also did not preflight their oil levels after buying a new brush cutter. Good video enjoyed your positive attitude toward getting it fixed.
Thank you for the kind words! At the very least I hope it causes someone to check the oil levels in their attachment before running them!
Weld a cap over the main nut on the blade bracket to protect the nut, I used an old oxygen bottle cap cut in half. Great comeback video on a dire situation.
Thank you! That’s a great suggestion!
Soon as I started watching I knew that gear box was empty. Didn't really surprise me at all when I kept watching
I think of it as a learning experience! Plus this has helped a few people rebuild their gearboxes. So I’m glad I was able to help some people locate parts and help them do the repair.
@@MakersAcres yeah that's good. I saw one for sale on marketplace and the ad said they are empty for transport. Doesn't really make sense to me but they should have a warning on them
@@mikejankoviak8542 yes, they should have a sticker on them that says that!
Great Job Bobby! I really liked watching your thought process on how you tackled this problem. Great Quality video and good pace!
Thanks man! I’m trying a longer video to see if people like that better or worse?
@@MakersAcres I watched the whole thing!
Good job man. Great work
Thank you!
Great video, with the bearings tho just add a little oil of them before installing so they aren’t dry on startup. Other than that awesome job!!
Thank you for the info! This was my first gearbox rebuild, so I am learning!
Believe I just made the same mistake. Luckily with this video I know what needs to be done.
I’m sorry to hear that! Hope this video helps you fix it. I think everything I used / needed is in the video description.
Lovin your video’s! Great work buddy.
Thank you! Really helps to hear these things when these videos take so much time to make.
Very impressive!
Thank you!
I'm a new subscriber, Keep up the good work.
Thank you and welcome to the channel!
Worth it’s weight in scrap, my skid-pro has a 400 pound gearbox with 8 “ tapered bearings turning a 500 pound flywheel with three 3\4” blades, .
Wow! That sounds awesome! For what it’s worth, I have been using this for 2 years since the rebuild and it has held up great!
Honestly don’t worry about painting the gearbox, it’ll never stay together long enough for corrosion to become an issue
@@petedavidsen1760 I have probably 40-60 hours of use since the rebuild and it is still going strong. I mean, I put way better bearings in it than what was in it before, so I expect a long life now. Would I rely on it if my business was mowing lawns or clearing brush with this, no. But for my personal property it has been wonderful. I just had to pay a stupid tax for not putting oil in it. It’s a better gear box now though even though it was painful.
19:34 I'd say you should remove as much rust as you can. The rust reformer, reforms the rust that you leave over that is still in the pores and microscopic areas...
Thank you for the info!
Genial saludos cordiales desde Patagonia.. Quisiera poder comprar un equipo e estos. Necesito limpiar 80 hectáreas..
Nothing from overseas comes with fluid, when I bought mine I about made that mistake also.
It was a hard lesson to learn!
Hello, how many hours of labor do you estimate you had in this repair? I have a similar issue and am trying to determine if it is worth it!
Also, can you please provide your resource you used to learn how to complete the repair?
Thank you!
I think what took the longest was researching the correct parts! Probably 3-5 hours for the actual repair. All of the resources are in the description. You might have to look on a desktop to see it.
For the second hour of use ,blades will be coming off, for god sakes don’t have any kids within 500’
Same thing happened to me, no gear oil due to shipping it from overseas. Since put a new gearbox in, blades and this weekend something let go and shattered my Kubota windshield….
Oh boo! Let me when you figure out what happened. That is scary. Glad you are ok!
@@MakersAcres it was a oh $hit moment.. I think it might have been some weld that snapped (I’ll check for you) ordered a 1/2 lexan front windshield for my Kubota SVL 95, supposed to be much safer than the regular glass. Better safe than sorry
@@Jonmalinowski ya. Good plan. I have had a stick that came into the cab once. If the window was not there it probably would have got me!
have you ever seen a work bench
Nah, I like working on the floor. Hehe. I do have a video later of when I get a work bench.
Looks like we may have got Animal Crossing and a Switch Lite at the same time. 😆 (Hope you didn't have to pay a scalped price for it)
Haha. Nice. Nope. We got it right before that stuff started happening!
Where can I get one
The whole mower or parts?
@Toes Foryou I put all the parts in the description of the video.
first thing, build yourself a table, save your knees.
Ya, I learned that the hard way on this one! I have a video of when I got a work bench from auction. So much better!
Replacement parts
All of the parts I used are listed in the description unless I missed something.
These come from China with no oil due to epa. 80/90 gear oil is needed. These blades cut too low to the ground. Easily break.
Haha. I know that now. I’ve probably mowed 10 hours since the rebuild and it is holding up fine. I normally do a couple passes. One up high and one closer to the ground. You have to be going kind of slow and you are constantly adjusting deck height.
@@MakersAcresi mod my blades and put on some bobcat blades. $35 per blade instead of what they want and double the metal on them. Never broke a blade since. Just the center piece bent now but it's not going to bend now with a half piece on it
@@charlesfuglie2491 thank you for the great info!
Need a punch and chisel set instead of ruining your screwdriver
I agree with you!
