One of a series of news reports produced by the U.S. Air Force, this newsreel showcases Strategic Air Command in the 1980s. It includes footage of a red alert drill, and KC-135 tankers in action. It also includes segments about the NATO Warrior Preparation Center in Europe, including simulation of Soviet attack strategies. This was an early form of computer-aided simulation utilized by the Department of Defense. It also includes a segment about U.S. forces in South Korea, the DMZ and Kunsan Air Force Base. F-16s and A-10 Thunderbolt II aircraft are shown.

Every Air Force unit, for decades, had monthly Commander's Call. Important to get everyone together, occasionally. Useful. Air Force Now files were always the highlight of these monthly meetings.
....not the mid to late 90s. We 'the flight line folks' hardly even knew what we were tasked for or who was running the show, unless there was a change of command ceremony...which was forgotten a few days later. We still maintained the mission capable rate. O Fs given for the Command.

I was stationed there when this was filmed. They were redoing our Flightline to get ready for the B-1's .
I remember seeing "Air Force Now" films at commander's calls. Good stuff.
Oh yes commanders call. My best memory was late 87 or 88 the program that resulted in the F-22 was announced to us in Air Force Now at commanders call. It amazes me how long it took to build that airplane.

I was the base weather station commander at RAF Woodbridge, when we transitioned from the F-4 to the A-10. We were the first NATO base to get the A-10...1978 or so.

Several years ago, at the Hamilton Ontario airshow, I was able to get into the boom operators area of a KC-135.

These are public domain films, and as such, I still don't see why you need to place an obtrusive watermark upon them.
Here's the issue: this film and others like it may have been made by taxpayers, but the U.S. Government in its infinite wisdom, threw it away. Tens of thousands of films were destroyed and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like this on online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
So in the 80s was it someone's job in the USAF to make weird sounds for these films like 6:15? Yeah Jim make me a sound that's like BEMDEBEDUM... make it spooooky.

Thanks for explaining! Just wondered... too bad there isn't a way to mark them invisibly...takes away from the experience somewhat, in my opinion. No negative or hostile intent here...not a all! I remember my Dad telling me he saw Clark Gable in some of the training films during the Second War.
Yes, Gable volunteered and served in the U.S. Army Air Force and appears in the propaganda film "Combat America".
Of Course it's a good thing to preserve history. As far as not being here to "educate" me on copyright because you've been "doing this for a long time"... Are you claiming copyright or not? If I find a paperback book in the trash, rescue it from obscurity, and then make copies of it and write my name on every page, or place it in a nice box with bows and ribbons on it and sequins, that doesn't magically make it my own copyrighted material, right?
Long story short, some films in our archive we hold the copyright on, some are in the public domain. It's on a case by case basis and through an investigative process that rights are determined.

In the same sense that Apple can sell you copies of music they don't own. It's their copy they are licencing companies/people to use in their own works. This is how they make a living.
Did you really need to watermark=obliterate an entire public domain film?
Yes. We are in the business of preserving films and making them available for documentary filmmakers and producers. Without the timecodes, there would be no way to recoup preservation costs or make our film archive possible.
Well, that's all fine and good, but it doesn't matter if the films are tossed away, or not. Just because you rescue an old print a trash bin, does this mean that magically it becomes yours in copyright? How does it become yours in copyright? Has anyone signed over the rights to you? No, they have not... It still belongs in copyright to the US Taxpayer. And is in the Public Domain, correct?
Great questions but we're not here to educate you about copyright. We know what we're doing, and have been doing it for more than a decade. Many of the films we've preserved, are not available in the National Archives or Library of Congress and, without our efforts, they might have been lost forever.
Consider this... you find a book in the trash, for which you don’t own the copyright. But... you now own that particular copy, on which you can write, draw, color... or loan it out or sell it. If you chose to index the book for reference, and write on it, you can mark it up however you like. Should you decide to share, lend, sell or give away your book, you can do so... and in whatever condition you choose. Ever buy a used text book, video game, DVD...
The fact that the video is available for no cost viewing on CZcams, and will be handed down for generations, instead of sitting in a landfill or costing taxpayers for film storage or destruction... is a plus, and such deserves compensation and funding to continue preservation efforts. Historic film preservation takes nothing from the public, but rather makes films more available to the public.
This particular film was around early in my Air Force career... and my nephew is currently a KC-135 Flight Engineer and former Boom Operator, who may be interest in seeing this film with me, while we swap war stories. And for that opportunity, I’m appreciative.
