Just watched your reaction to Heartbreak Hotel on the Milton Berle show. In 1956 Elvis was 21 years old. By the time he did the Aloha Concert he was 38. I think one of the reasons Elvis was so toned down was one his age and years of concerts took a toll on his body but most importantly he wanted to be known for his great voice performance. He didn't want to be stuck in his younger years as only a teen idol. Thanks for your reaction.❤

The 1973 concert, Aloha From Hawaii, was a whole different situation. Elvis was being seen live in many different countries , some for the first time and they wanted Elvis to tone down his performances to not offend anyone. If you watch his performances from 1968 through 1974, you will see he still had great energy and stage presence. Even the last 3 years you could find fantastic tapes of his performances. Elvis was 21 in 1956. Great reaction! More Elvis!!❤❤❤

Elvis was animated his whole career if you mean feeling the music and facial expressions that connect with the emotion. The Hawaii special was unique in that it was being broadcast around the world and Elvis felt a responsibility to represent his country, as well as perform for his fans. This is why he chose the American Eagle suit, and some of the songs-like American Trilogy(a MUST watch). His voice was extremely powerful during that concert but he was a bit toned down because he felt a citizen duty, not just entertainment. If you watch clips from his Las Vegas concerts such as Suspicious Minds and Polk Salad Annie, etc…you will get a better idea of what it was like to see Elvis in action.

Elvis’ style changed after he came back from the army in 1960. He quit live performances then to concentrate on making movies. ( with exception of a charity concert in 60/61 ish). He did not perform in front of an audience live until 1968. He change to a more mature style. He was 33 by that time. Trying to act 22 would have been odd. Successful singers evolve with times. I would like to see you react to Suspicious Minds Live from Las Vegas ( not the Aloha from Hawaii version). He moves all over the stage in that one.
Elvis would have been approximately 20/21 at the time of the Milton Berle Show.

He was 21 years old. Elvis was born on January 8 1935, in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a little two bedroom house his father built. That house is still there and tourists can visit it. Elvis had a twin brother, Jessie Garon Presley, who was still born. 💔
Below is a link to his performance of Blue Suede Shoes from the same concert on The Milton Berle Show in 1956.
You will see at the beginning, Elvis' brother is mentioned.
Also, at 4:18, Elvis is doing something with his guitar string.
Between 4:28 and 4:33, you realize he broke his guitar string because you see him trying to pull it off.
When he steps back in front of the mic, you can kinda see the guitar string hanging down from the headstock. It's hanging in front of the drummers left leg. You can see it against the backdrop of the drummers black pants.
The audio is good and it's a great performance.

Elvis was 21 in 1956. The Aloha from Hawaii live concert that you mentioned, was in 1973, just four years before his death, & just a couple of weeks after his divorce had gone through, so I don’t imagine he was feeling in top form either physically or emotionally. He had done a full dress rehearsal of the whole concert the day before, in that Hawaiian heat. That full rehearsal concert, raised $75,000 which was a big sum of money back then, & it was used to build a cancer ward at the Honolulu hospital. Elvis had been asked if he could help raise money towards that …. & he agreed to do that, & he even paid $1,000 for a ticket to his own concert. He was an incredibly generous man. He would probably had been wiser to wear a more lightweight costume, as that costume he wore for those two concerts, apparently weighed over 60lbs, & possibly as much as 70. And of course he was 38 by then. He always perspired a lot when he performed in those last years, & he doesn’t appear to drink much, so losing a lot of fluid through sweating, in that sort of heat, would have been very draining physically. Nowadays, of course, we have energy drinks, such as tennis players take during their matches, but back then it was just water. So sweating heavily while performing, means losing a lot of electrolytes, which water is not replacing. I guess that is why energy drinks were created in the first place, for sportsmen & performers.

Great clip! Agree with you about the upright bass. I played in a bluegrass band for years and bluegrass almost always uses uprights. Electric basses just can’t compare with the doghouse bass!

Thank you for asking the question about Milton Berle and RCA. Yes, Berle was signed to the RCA label. The earliest date I could find was 1947.

I believe the bass player is Bill black. I heard a story about how they would strap that thing to the top of the car they went show to show in. I believe Paul McCartney eventually bought it because.... well it's Paul McCartney what needs to be said haha

Good talking points. For dynamic latter day Elvis performances check out the 3 song medley from the 68 Comeback Special featuring Heartbreak Hotel, Hound Dog and All Shook Up. From 70 Vegas try Sweet Caroline or You've Lost that Loving Feeling.

The last 4 years of Elvis life were infected by his illness. Elvis was an Alpha 1 gene. His mothers parents Were first cousins so he inherited a double gene which according to the book by Sally Hostel "Destined to die young He inherited, lung diease, heart problems and a failing liver. He was so poor in his early years he never got medical care and of course his identical twin died at birth in 1935. He was very private about his health and became addicted to the medication his doctor prescribed mainly pain killers. Alpha 1 was unheard of then. His mom died at 46 her two brothers died in their 40'd and Elvis died at 42. All of heart disease and liver failure. Had he never taken drugs would have still died in his 40's. Thank you for diving into his fascinating life. I hope you will explore is generous humanitarian side. " Elvis Presley King of Kindness". His career was from 54 to 1977. True we are crazy about him but Elvis changed music and culture. See "Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra duet" in 1960. Thanks I subbed

czcams.com/video/osxJOrw3iBU/video.htmlsi=Bi7OxEqZAZGflzvL Check out this link for Blue Suede Shoes from this same performance. Pay attention towards the end, the stand-up bass player Bill Black to Elvis' left sits on the bass, screams and pounds it on both sides kicking his legs out. He would routinely do that while they were touring in the 50's as Elvis was blowing up. This is rarely spoken of but supposedly Elvis' manager didn't like it because he felt it took attention away from Elvis and wanted it stopped.
