Crossroads - Friedhelm [Generation War]

My take on piecing together a tribute to Friedhelm Winter, arguably the most interesting character in Generation War. He slowly turns from a witty, reading boy into the brutal and terrorising monster he needs to be in order to survive this impossible era. I've tried to capture his transformation in this video.
If you haven't watched Generation War yet, I highly recommend it, you can read up on it here: www.imdb.com/title/tt1883092/

But they did spill innocent blood didn't they? They could've rebelled against Hitler, couldn't they? When Goebbels asked the German nation if they want total war, they loved it and went on with it. Now that they have lost, I am supposed to believe that in the end they had no choice but to kill 40 million people? 26 million of which were the Russians that I am supposed to see as problem for the world? I don't think I will buy that.

What is your guys’ opinion as to why Friedhelm killed himself? His character broke my freakin heart probably because he reminded me of myself in a lot of ways. Me personally I thought he decided to sacrifice himself because he simply couldn’t live with the person he had turned into, he never wanted to be a soldier yet the war conquered him and turned him into someone he hated. He may have felt guilt for the actions he had committed during the war and he felt that he had failed himself for not living up to his moral convictions so sacrificing his life for the kids was a way to amend the terrible wrongs he had committed during the conflict. Which is one hell of a sacrifice in my opinion and it says a lot about the strength of his character. Anyways sorry for the long tangent, I’d love to hear what you all think

I am British so my ancestors may have fought in this war, and against the German side - however to me this film simply shows the horror and pointlessness of war, and how one person has to essentially 'become a monster' to get through it. Even if he had escaped the Russians at the end, his life would have no doubt felt like a death sentence anyway, because of what he had to do. I watch it over and over, it makes me sad that we still don't seem to have learned from this. I don't doubt there were thousands of real 'Friedhelms' out there. :(
