I lived in Bakersfield about 10 yrs ago, I first visited Wind Wolves Preserve with my children's grade school classes on fieldtrips. Later, my 15-yr-old son and I would bring our mt bikes to this trail on a Saturday and pedal up. It was always a blast coming back, which is practically all downhill, we would catch some adventurous speeds back to the trailhead. I don't recall ever seeing any other bicyclists when we were out there, a couple times we saw high school runners getting in some trail work. The history of the trail is pretty cool, before California was stolen from Mexico! Glad you folks visited this trail, looks like lots of smiles and such.

Oh my gosh...you are in my backyard. I live in Bakersfield, and Wind Wolves is everyone's easy jaunt for when we need to get out of the city. Its often the destination for overnight touring, as its only a 35 mile ride and has decent camping amenities.
To get you birding fix, try to visit the western Kern River Bike Trail during a wet year. The area is used as a water recharge area, so you get tons of ducks and various other birds.
The Tule Elk reserve is near to the western end as well.
About 20 miles north along the I-5 is the Kern National Wildlife Refuge. That is a birding mecca and lots of dirt roads.

If there are Emmy's for CZcams, I will nominate those skies. Your cameras really made a capture there. Wildlife tip, especially in grasslands, is lay the bike down, and just sit. Sometimes it takes 15-20 minutes, the landscape does come back alive so often. I am putting together a local ride for spring migration, and we are doing just that, like a point count. Then going back and ride during breeding season. The dirt rural road is low traffic and crosses grasslands and wetlands. Vey similar topography to your ride today but with more water.

Nice scenery, looks a little like Scottland. You are such a nice cycling duo to watch! My best wishes for Laura's health! Guys, how can you stand wearing those caps under the helmet? Don't you feel your hair/scalp "suffocating" ? I tried it once under winter rain, but took it off after a while! If you do it for the visor, you can make a DIY one yourselves, and attach it with zip ties onto the helmet. Find the videos on YT. Have a nice time and....happy 2024!

Another amazing video. The interesting geology around there is from numerous fault lines including the San Andreas. If you go north to Carrizo Plain National Monument there is much more likelyhood of seeing some nature as well as some potential rides. Stunning geology.
You can actually ride across the San Andreas fault and see evidence of how the pacific plate is moving north while the North American plate wants to move south, and thus we have earthquakes. The view from the air is truly inspiring and scary! I have yet to really explore it on bike, but friends say you are really on your own out there.
Hope you can give it a try sometime.

@@PathLessPedaledTV Just rewatched your NZ series, rode the Great Taste Nelson - Motueka trail return yesterday (currently drive/cycling the South Island) and the ferry was full of bikes both times I used it. Great to see how many of those planned rides are now reality and bringing benefits. One thing that has broadened the user base which wasn't anticipated back then, e-bikes now mean so many more people can ride. I'm still analog but guesstimate 30-50% ebikes on the trails now

Beautiful area, I used to live in Bako and love those trails, but. I will add a word of caution to those who want to travel from out of town, it gets brutally hot and it is not green as in the video, which appears to be a springtime or winter ride. A lot of out-of-towners make fun of Bakersfield, but it has some amazing hills and mountains that are great for cyclists like Tehachapi and Woody/Glennville areas.
