    Thank you both for these videos. I ride a Chieftain Ltd, am 5, 2 and weigh about 120 lbs. The struggle is real. And the limitations are real. Courtney illustrated it perfectly as well as the workarounds and things to avoid. This type of content is encouraging and shows how willpower overcomes fear.

    To back up the bike, I would put down both passenger pegs and push my calves move backward. To hop on the bike, I would use to hold front brake, step up one foot on the floor board and swing my leg over. Been doing that since.

      Next I think I'm going to do a video of Ryan as my passenger! Also, even though we went over backing up on this one, in the last year of owning this bike, I have never had to back my bike up an incline. Like Ryan said, I avoid it at all costs. The only reason I can ever think of someone NEEDING to back up on a hill is for a picture of all bikes backed up to a curb. I let gravity and the motor work for me!!

    Thanks again guys these are brilliant

  • @sanderslongdrive
    @sanderslongdrive Před rokem +5

    Courtney is absolutely brilliant. Now here's an alternative viewpoint from someone not selling massive bikes:-
    When wondering if you can manage a very tall / very heavy bike please bear in mind (i) Why do you want such a bike? (ii) How often will you be riding / practicing? (iii) Will you be riding on say the long straight roads of the USA, or say the heavy traffic/ immensely difficult roads of the UK? (iv) What does your home parking involve? (v) How badly would dropping the bike affect you?
    It's important to remember that riding expertise is not purely straight line learning. You don't get better over the years, standing ready to turn on expertise at any time. I've been riding on the roads for 55 years + and for much of it I felt that I could do anything on a bike, but now that I ride infrequently taking out my Honda Valkyrie Interestate is a major challenge principally due the garage access - steep hill / 90 degree turns at 1 mph etc. But it's hard when you consider any particular bike exceptionally desirable and feel that you simply have to have it!
    At the end of the day owning a bike which frightens you is not what biking is all about.

    I'm a short guy(5'4") and no joke, I struggle to back up my Yamaha Raider. It's wide stance has my legs spread and me on my toes. Plus the exhaust is high enough that when I drop my right leg, it rests on the hot pipe. So needless to say.... If I HAVE to back up.. I have zero shame hopping off the bike and pushing it back. Hahahaha

    Moonshine HD, one of the few excellent dealers remaining. I've set up a few FLH and other brand bikes for shorties. Adding a Baker Drive Train reverse is another great option. And yet another costly but effective option for the bagger, the LegUp LandinGear. Irrelevant, some also get the Rekluse RadiusX auto clutch. Seat reupholstering custom fit to YOUR ass, many options here. Some of the more costly higher quality rear shocks 1" lower is another option, there are controversial considerations here. A lower profile tire, usually calls for speedo calibration.

    I started on a touring bike, Well, not entirely true…. 30 years ago I rode. Sportster twice and had a triumph 650 1968 bonneville that was back in the 80s …. So…. Yea. It was like starting new …. You gotta lose the fear .. just cruise for hours on relatively low traffic country roads.. get the feel..it will come quickly… Don’t try all that parking lot stuf you see until a bit later.. but definitely do try the parking lot stuff with full lock turns.. like the parking lot trainers you see.. you will want to do that.. but not until you have a few hundred maybe even a thousand miles under your belt

  • @ImAlwaysHungry
    @ImAlwaysHungry Před 2 lety +1

    Sometimes you'll still be put in a position where you don't have a choice, but to be parked in a not ideal position. If you end up on a grade towards the kickstand, being short can be very difficult to get the bike upright. Or, you may have a steeper grade to back up, be parked in grass or on gravel, and being short makes it about impossible to move the bike on your own. Also, if you're going to be doing a lot of errands, and stops, a bigger bike can really be a handful, even trying to be strategical about where you're parking. Even at times my average height and tall friends prefer not to be out on their street glides and road glides. I'm shorter stature myself. I prefer touring bikes for just that, and have a softail which is my daily ride. Note, I do have the Legends Air Ride on my softail, so being able to set it way down really helps with manually maneuvering the bike. I'd reccomend a similar suspension setup an a touring bike, if youre shorter. I know I sound negative about short people and touring bikes. I'm not against it. Just be aware, you're likely still going to run into issues even with short person strategies.

    quick answer: probably not. if you can flat foot the bike, you can learn to handle it safely, no matter what your size is. every harley bagger can be modified for those who are barely over 5 feet.
    every bike is too big when you are a new rider............ every bike is too small when you are an experienced rider
