What's also powerful was his commitment to walk away from the girl he had a crush on. Few men are able to do that because they fear losing her forever due to their insecurity. Maverick is the definition of confidence. In that moment, he demonstrated confidence, dignity, discipline, and self-respect. Those are just a few things women WANT in a man.
@@barchetta575mExactly! She saw that & that's what she liked about him. Also that he was a smart ass in class with the "well, ma'am it doesn't seem like it in this case now does it?" Girls like challenges & by a hot guy? Even better 😍

Iceman knew there was something between Maverick and Charlie. The way he takes off the aviators and looks at the both of them is like a predator watching prey. He knew. Great scene.
Iceman one of the smartest men in the room. He won that TG trophy for a reason. Realistically, Ice should have been toast several times in the last dogfight scene.
Charlie is one of my favourite characters of all time, if not the only one. She is authentic and fierce even though in front of all those people she hid her feelings. I love that she doesn't give up on Mav and chases him and tells him what she had to. I love her.
i hate to admit it but this scene with that "gutsiest" line is ingenious. completely encapsulates what Mav is all about. very complex. brilliant script/scene writing. and instead of some blase compliment, acknowledgement esp coming from a rival is the ultimate compliment.
Plus anyone that has served knows that what really matters the most is the people that you serve with have confidence in you. This scene captures that perfectly.
There are a lot of underlying contexts in this scene. The understanding within that room that Maverick may have made an "incorrect" move, but that one that other experienced pilots in that same room empathize with Maverick as being "admirable"..even "correct" in its own context, as one pilot whispered to Maverick out of Charlie's earshot. The overarching and competing ideas between Iceman vs Maverick's combat styles. The competing ideas between classroom/by-the-book analysis vs actual/gut-instinct piloting. The tension in the room of Charlie and Maverick's secret affair...and the idea that it may not be so "secret" to many in that room. There's Viper's warning to Maverick about when to retreat which will play its role in the Final Battle, Goose who sympathizes with his Pilot, Maverick'stemper, and a lot more.
Who cares what critics think! In my opinion it’s a fantastically constructed scene, great narrative, beautifully acted and actually very realistic! One of my favourite films.
Yes I def know that ...loved this movie when I was a kid saw it in the cinema ..one of my all time faves ...the late Tony Scott directed a masterpiece here!
Because I am super tired of seeing it: Charlie *did not* degrade or humiliate Maverick in this scene. Not remotely. Humiliating would be straight up insulting his abilities in front of everyone and repeatedly kicking him while he’s down. And refusing to apologize for it. She assessed his performance and gave her professional opinion. As an instructor - with government clearance, I will add - *that’s her job.* Funny thing is, Iceman, Viper, Jester, and Stinger all do the same thing throughout the movie (and, in some cases, in a less professional manner), but it’s more than obvious as to why it’s a problem when Charlie does it… Just calling it like is. 🤷🏻♀️ Maverick reacts the way that he does because a) he has a big ego and he’s disappointed that his stunt didn’t impress her (she later admits that it did, however) and b) because he’s falling for Charlie, so he takes her assessment literally to heart. And it’s not as if Charlie doesn’t see that: she steals a quick glance at Maverick and she can see the hurt in his eyes (Cruise and McGillis killed it in that scene, by the way. You can really get a sense of what they’re thinking and it’s conveyed by the way they look at each other). She even goes after Maverick and tries to explain herself. But, sure - she was out to humiliate and degrade him. 🙄

80s was truly the BEST decade- Kelly Macgilles iconic 80s beauty, a really nice woman, 80s styles was soo much better, always be there my 80s virus-new times is crap-
Maverick is smarting because he is used to flying in a set way; by the seat of his pants and going one on one with a bogey while the other jet goes after the other. As we saw in the opening sequence, that doesn't always work. If Maverick stayed with Cougar whilst they dealt with the migs; mig 1 wouldn't have had the chance to get behind him and harass him. At Top Gun, he is now having what he knew as gospel taken away and has to learn new skills in just 5 weeks. As Iceman pointed out; It wasn't his flying that's holding him back, but his attitude. The enemy is dangerous, but he's worse; dangerous and foolish. He might not like his team mates and they feeling might be mutual. But who side is he on?.This gave Maverick considerable food for thought, that other people saw him differently to how he saw himself. He started to change his ways slowly. Maverick's proficiency and conduct reports spoke volumes; lost his qualifications as section leader 3 times, grounded twice, performed 5 high speed passes over Air Control towers. However in combat, a very skilled pilot. Viper took up the challenge of knocking him into shape, which he did, by showing Maverick how to turn on the unpredictability and turn it off. He also showed him the power of teamwork and better tactical flying. All of this came in when they were called in to give combat support whilst an operation was underway to rescue the crew of a crippled communication ship. Hollywood was shot down during the mission, Maverick was sent up to provide backup to the now defensive Ice and Slider. After a while 4 of the 6 migs were shot down, with the other 2 returning home. Maverick shot down 3 Ice shot down 1. Maverick then brought back a crippled Iceman to the ship so he could land. By this time, Hollywood and Wolf man had been rescued and brought back to meet Maverick.
...when to turn off the unpredictability and when to turn it on....Yes, that's a subtlety that's vital to maintain some form of control...in sport, work and life in general...:)
Maverick was hurt AF when she burned him in front of his peers like that. Even though Hollywood gave him props. Iceman is such a troll when he flick his shades off. He even look at Slider, like see that? LOL

It kind of got to me how she belittled the tactic and undermined when he said “You don’t think. You just do.” Knowledge about the fights from a ground point of view is one thing, but entirely different when in actual combat. In boxing they teach you to not step on your opponents foot or head not to headbutt. But in an actual fight, all that goes out the window and you gotta do what you gotta do.
