    I buy cards to collect and to flip. I got into cards as a 9 year old. Did it out of pure joy. I still do. Nothing makes me smile like dealing with baseball cards. It truly is amazing. It's a hobby that we spend money on that we actually get to keep physical items of and sometimes can actually make money from. Either way I'm happy for everyone that collects and gets happiness from it. Great video Ty!

    You don't need to justify anything to anyone on collections you buy. You put a face to a very human situation. Collector's are a different breed. We like to show our stuff off and share with others. In a way I see it as Archie showing us just how cool cards are. How cool his collection was and would probably be happy it went to you. Keep up the great work!

    You said it so well. Many have lost what the word Hobby means. Now don’t get me wrong, it cost money so you have to make that back by selling some stuff or you will go broke, but collecting for enjoyment is just lost on many. One of my favorite things to do is to go to card shows and look through the quarter boxes. I will take hours doing it. Looking for my favorite teams and players. I walk out feeling good. I have gone in and spent more money on a higher ticket item and it just feels kind of empty. It’s about the memories a certain player brings back or your fandom for a team. I also collect to share with my boys. Show them the hobby and try not to concentrate on the money part. The best thing I have ever heard is to collect what you enjoy and ask yourself if all sports cards went to 0 value tomorrow would you still enjoy it? I hope the answer is yes. Keep up the good work!

    The auto is from the Jordan flight school camps. Anyone that attended the camp was aloud to have two items signed of their choice a ball,card,hat whatever you could carry into the camp in your personal bag. Where the ? are is that upper-deck has mj exclusive for signatures and at that time upper deck was pretty big on keeping his auto close to home. Upper deck also had the upper deck authenticated catalog order only items so coins this of been a UDA catalog item? Maybe,but you would need to double check with upper deck and they do keep excellent records to the upper deck authenticated products produced thru out the years. I never attended the camp because it was so expense as a child I couldn’t talk my gma into it but Ive spoken to people that have and had pictures of themselves as kids at the camp getting mj auto then a rep putting a sticker on each item he signed as quality control. I do own 5 flight school autos and it’s always great to see them in the wild they are definitely interesting to see what people chose to get signed. This card I believe was handed to Mike and being it’s a double image card he signed it as it was handed to him. I would try to contact UDA just to verify the card it may save you some money and a step before sending it for psa/dna.

The Jordan auto is real in my opinion.

    Recently I bought about a hundred cards off comc. They were small cards I thought would sell well in my area - and then another handful of cards that are cards I enjoy (70's and 80's Stl Cardinals cards!). Now my fun challenge for myself is to resell the cards that I bought for that purpose for enough to pay for the (overseas) shipping and the cost of my PC cards. If your side-hustle hobby can pay for your card collecting hobby, it's win/win!

    Hey Ty. Love the show and love what you do! Yeah, you can't be faulted for winning the collection on a blind bid. I guess if you made a million dollars on it you could perhaps give a little something back to the family. But of course with a collection like that, so much work is going to have to go into getting it ready for sale. Completely agree with you about what constitutes value. The only place I would disagree with you would be your remarks about focus. Everybody has their own way of collecting. A large and varied collection doesn't denote a lack of depth on the part of a collector. Nor does it mean they are enjoying their collection any less than someone who is focused on fewer things. (I know you know this, of course.)

A guy I know, passed last year all of a sudden due to a heart attack, left his wife, and all his wife knew or thought he would want his cards to go to his kids. Well his kids got them and went and sold whatever they could. No attachment whatsoever. I’m betting that’s not what he had in mind. People need to talk with their loved ones and get an idea of what they would do with the cards and get a good plan set up. Even if it’s to sell. Thanks Ty for the good info! Take care Brother! Eddie

    @timothyaiello8918 Před rokem

    First off, I love your show! The short video where you went through a list of advice…literally reading off a piece of paper…clearly, you want to inform and you have good intentions.
    Admittedly, I do not buy lots comparable to the size that TY does, I think what I have to say is relevant.
    I’ve educated myself A LOT about cards that are worth money - especially in the junk wax era, but nice vintage too - that many people don’t know about. I’ve found a lot of these cards over the years, and 99% of the time, the seller had no clue that their 1990 Post Cereal Ken Griffey Jr, or Jeter Refractor, or seemingly random Jeter card is actually one of his RCs, and is worth good money.
    At a point early in my journey, I felt conflicted, and still do at times (it’s part of the gig), so I asked many people in my immediate circle how I should feel about buying these cards on the cheap, knowing that the seller isn’t fully aware of what they have. They all said something to the effect of “you took the time to educate yourself. Why would you tell them what they have?”
    But despite their overwhelmingly one-sided responses, I wasn’t fully comforted - because, well, just because they are loved ones doesn’t mean they have the same moral structure as I do.
    What HAS provided me the most comfort is this; the times I’ve tried to explain to a seller what they have what a seller has, and the process I advise them to follow to obtain the full value of what they have - none have said they would do what I suggested. They just ask for a little more $$.
    I’ve literally tried to explain to sellers for an hour or more why they should not sell me their cards, and what they should do to fully appreciate the value. It has never lead to the intended result.
    Lastly, If you spend years of your life to go to law school or medical school, did you not earn the hourly wage you command?
    YOUR time is worth money, more so when you have expertise. Ty often says this and it has to be factored into the price. I’d be very willing to bet that those who have sold Ty big lots are not willing to go through every card, do not have the time or money to properly sort them, or have the nicest ones graded (and almost definitely cannot predict which cards will even grade high, so they will almost certainly waste HUGE amounts of money trying. Their 9000$…gone in an instant.
    Get real people, TY put in a lot of time to learn cards, and a lot of sweat building connections. He literally fly’s around the country and spends multiple days looking through thousands upon thousands of cards to find value. How many of you who have “cast a stone,” would do what he does? How many of you have the time/means? Seriously, be honest with yourself.
    How much would it cost to hire a lawyer for 48-hours? People aren’t as stupid as you think. They weigh their options.
    Stop hating. Ty earns his finds.

    Did you get a great deal, yes. That's all part of the hobby it's baked into collecting in general, sometimes you get a great deal and sometimes you don't. I honestly feel the guy would be proud to have his collection showcased on your program. As collectors we all have a little something inside of us that wants others in the hobby to know how awesome our collection is no matter how big or small and your show did that for him. Those who make such comments tend to be into collecting more for the money and there is nothing wrong with that but this is a hobby first and people started collecting out of love of a team or player. This collector was obviously in it because he loved it.

    Ive heard mixed things about those classic hand numbered autos regarding fakes etc. But who knows. I love the hunt.

    I’m not sure anyone was disappointed with your purchase. I, for one, had problems with the sale. I can’t fault you for finding a good deal. My issue comes is with the team of “loved ones” that couldn’t even put a reserve on the sale. Either way, I’m happy for ya! Congrats!

    I value my cards by how much I love them. I only collect cards I love. I love all the cards I can't have. I love my cards.

    The Jordan is probably real, from his flight camp back in the day, the authentication sticker is from Upper Deck, and you can possibly email them to verify the number. Normally, there is a small COA pamphlet with the auto.

    Good stuff here, its not all about the flip or $$$, for some like me its a way of being closer to the game I grew up playing, and collecting the players I enjoy watching the most. PC can definitely get out hand, so its ok to bless others by giving away some card and passing on the love of the hobby to others.

    Look no meed to apologize I appreciate your show. I understand the process of what can happen when collecting. If I pass my son gets it. An if he decides to sell it that is the name of the game whatever he decided to take money its up yo him I am gone.

    I get it it's an auction and goes for what it goes for but maybe the ppl that thought you guys got over on the sellers of the collection know ING you guys are cool dudes I think maybe they were thinking they feel like you would have said look there is alot more value here than we paid for and maybe they thought you guys would throw them an extra bone or something but at the end of the day it's no one's business but you guys happy collecting dudes

    I like to safely pin mine to the back of my bike so it makes a cool noise. I have this one I found it's super old...some guy named Mantle. The thing is from the early 50's so who gives a crap about some dusty old baseball card.

    I collect for the enjoyment of collecting. So im the same as he was. I dont care about the value of my collection. If the whole hobby tanks and is worth nothing more than the paper and cardboard its printed on i will still collect. I have got more out of collecting than any amount of $ could be paid for what i have.

    I mean you are in it to make money. Not at all hating. You bought a good collection at a amazing price. It’s on the executors to sell for the right price. They were in a way ripped off but that’s on them

    No one should have to explain winning an auction. Period. Now, what's sad is the fact Archie spent over a few hundred thousand dollars on a collection that ended up only selling for $8,200. That should be a good lesson for collectors who don't have a plan for their collection after their passing. The lesson here is, make a plan. That has nothing to do with you winning a bid.

    • @CHASINGCARDBOARD
      @CHASINGCARDBOARD  Před rokem +1

      That’s 100% the lesson… but folks also assume that the money Archie spent just went to waste. That’s completely not true. He was not in it for money, end of story. He did it because he enjoyed it…and his family confirmed in so many ways how much he just enjoyed his cards.
      But yes, you need a plan!!

  • @ryanfitzgerald2816
    @ryanfitzgerald2816 Před rokem

    The major takeaway from Archie's collection to me was the overwhelming size of it. It was so large his family had no chance of summarizing it well before selling, therefore not giving you or any other potential buyer a full view of what was there. If his 6 million cards were just the top 60,000 cards instead, it'd be 1% the size and very manageable to advertise. His family likely could have gotten double for it as well.
