While grunge music was on it’s way out by the mid 90’s a new sub-genre of rock called post-grunge sprouted up in it’s ashes and one of those early bands was British group Bush. Lambasted by critics as being derivative of bands from Seattle, his home country of England never embraced Bush early on. But those circumstances did little to hurt record sales as by the end of the 90’s the band sold nearly 10 million albums worldwide in just half a decade, headlined arenas and became one of the most successful group’s of the mid to late 90’s. Today let’s talk about the history of Bush.
Compared to the grunge bands before them, Bush leader Gavin Rossdale had a pretty posh life. Growing up in the northwestern London he had a middle class upbringing being the son of a doctor who had politically connected patients some of which were part of the African National Congress. His mother meanwhile was a model. Rossdale would attend the prestigious prep school Westminister, attempt a career at soccer that was cut short due to an injury. His parents would divorce when he was just 11 and he would be raised by his father and aunt. By the age of 17 he left his westminster school and started his first band called midnight
All the members of Bush, had older siblings who were teen-agers in the late ‘70s, when the punk explosion was at its peak. They would be exposed to groups like the clash and the Sex Pistols. Rossdale would tell the LA Times “Growing up in England, we were all punks in our own way,”“When I was 12, you know, I had this spiky bleached-blond hair. I was really into it.” Rossdale was a late arrival to pickup guitar not playing the instrument until he turned 19. He would tell Chicago Tribune “I left home at 17, was this wandering soul at 19, and decided to become a singer--a very purposeful decision to be the singer, because I wanted to be rich and famous. It was then I decided I wanted to be on a stage craving the attention of thousands of people.”
Rossdale would support himself with odd jobs while playing in a variety of bands including a mid 80s pop act named Midnight with Sasha Puttnam who was the son of Chariots of fire movie produce David Puttman. Much to their surprise the band got signed and even put out a few singles and opened for big country and cyndi lauper, but that’s about as far as they got. Rossdale would tell Rolling Stone “We got signed way too young in the mid 80’s when everyone was throwing all this money around. We weren’t developed and we didn’t deliver. So as far as the A&R community in London was concerned. I was soiled.”
Rossdale would soon leave Midnight and play in several other bands, but decided to change his life up telling Rolling Stone “my life was too safe in london. So i thought going to america would help my career. When i got there i came to the conclusion that there was nothing to my life: an irrelevant band, no one i was with personally. No family ties.” By 1991 he moved to California for half a year. Friends back home helped setup accommodations for him and he made money working on music videos as a production assistant. He would recall to Rolling Stone the highs and the lows of his new home. The high would be seeing Nirvana perform at the Roxy in LA, while the low point would be crashing at the place of an ex-girlfriend of five years. The same ex-girlfriend whose boyfriend Jake Scott would go on to direct Bush’s video for Comedown.
The early days of Bush dated back to November of 1991 when Bryan Adams played Wembley Stadium. At that show Rossdale would meet a fellow musician, a guitarist named Nigel Pulsford. They soon bonded over their musical tastes with Rossdale telling Rolling Stone “When he mentioned the pixies i knew that was it.”

I will never understand why Bush got so much hate, they have an awesome sound with Gavin having a unique voice, all he wanted to do was play music and make music, and for those saying they sound like nirvana I really don’t hear it
Having lived through those years, it was a stupid trend after Kurt's passing. Even STP got that kind of flak. Just because grunge sound shared musical elements it didn't mean the bands were reaping off each other. Instead it was a beautiful fountain of different visions coming out simultaneously. Now we're stuck with prefabricated studio garbage. Clone music by cloned teams of one hit wonders.
I feel like Bush saved grunge. Grunge would have completely died without them.

I saw Bush a week ago! Awesome! Gavin looks, sings, moves like he did back in the day. He jumped in the crowd and I touched his sweaty arm!!!❤❤❤
They were low brow Nirvana knock offs . Rossdale has a way better singing voice than the raspy , gravelly voice he went with at the time . To put it another way , a lot people were not buying what Bush were selling because they came off as disingenuous .
I was airbrushing t-shirts in a Niagara Falls,NY souvenir store.The teenagers from the pizzeria next door were in the store talking to some guy and then got his autograph. When he was done he walked over to check out what I was doing. I asked him if he was a somebody and then he noticed I was reading USA Today. He turned the paper a couple pages back and pointed to an article about Bush that I had just read and said “That’s me.” It was Gavin; we talked about the band, I liked them and heard them on Canadian stations calling them “Bush X.” He said that was good, a folk singer owned the name Bush in Canada. A salesgirl I worked with wanted Gavin’s autograph , she didn’t know who he was but thought he was cute, so he signed the USA Today article and I found the rest of the band and they happily signed it too, we had a short chat. They were really nice guys.
Apparently the Canadian Bush agreed to release the trademark on the condition that the UK Bush made a charitable donation

Bush is on tour with Breaking Benjamin and Alice in Chains in the states currently. Saw Gavin last Friday and high fived him as he ran through the crowd during one of his songs.
Just seen bush and breaking Benjamin last night in Michigan 5/16/23 it was awesome, singer of Bush ran through the crowd while performing at the age of 57, ud of thought he was 20 if you didn't know

Yes this true but Chris traynor is pretty awesome in his own right. I like what he brings to the table. Is it Nigel? No, but you have to give it to Chris for making it his own. I respect that.

@@bbilagody of course he is technically capable, but Chris is a very different guitar player, I’m surprised that anyone would think that he would be a good replacement when Nigel left.
It's hard to comprehend just how omnipresent Bush was in America in the mid-90s. I was 8 years old when Sixteen Stone came out, and it was just everywhere. 1995 was dominated by mainly two bands, Smashing Pumpkins and Bush. 1995 was a great year for Rock, and some of my fondest memories are listening to the radio at that time and soaking in all this great music.
crappy american/western pop culture. Needs to be forgotten as soon as possible. All of the rock genre and whatever came after, hiphop etc...just crap that was raping the world.

Glad to see Bush getting some love on this channel. I always thought that they were criminally underrated. They always got hate that I never felt they deserved. I am glad to see them still making good albums. Their latest album "The Kingdom" is excellent.
I'm glad i'm not the only one that feels this way. I was becoming a teenager around the time bands like Bush and Silverchair were breaking big here in the USA and I still consider them among my favorite bands of all time. The nostalgia I have for Sixteen Stone especially is deep and even girls that weren't very into rock music still dug songs like Glycerine.

I’m a metal head but Bush was definitely one of my favorite commercial bands in the 90’s! They never really had the same success after Sixteen Stone and always rooted for their return to form but sadly it never came.
"The Chemicals Between Us" was a great song, however.

Yeah Sixteen Stone kept the song structures simple and catchy. Once a band starts producing slow melancholy crap, they are dead to me. Basically every "grunge" band turned in to that.
@@JasonEllingsworth no there was only a few big real grunge bands and non really sold out. Nirvana, alice in chains, soundgarden, melvuns, screaming trees, mother love bone. Post grunge is all sell out crap and there's millions of fake grunge bands.
Bush was amazing!! What a trippy music career, I didn't know all the struggle they went through but Gavin still doing shows as Bush and sounds great! Even if everyone bailed on him he can still pull the weight and sound like Bush.

I really never heard any of these comparison bands in Bush. I liked first 2 albums. I thought they sounded unique. Liked his voice, the bass line on comedown, little things has an awesome riff with killer drums. I dont get it. I listened to Nirvana, Soundgarden etc at the time as well. I dont think they sound like any of those bands. Im a musician so maybe im jaded. But they had a unique tone and sound I dug.
I personally love their first 4 albums.
"Sixteen Stone", "Razorblade Suitcase", "The Science of Things" and "Golden State" are just masterful and highly enjoyable.
They actually had artistic aubstance behind them and have aged terrifically.
They sound better and better and grow more on me every year that goes by.

totally agree. That was bush....not the revolving lineup of ever changing musicians like the "bush" of today. Really, it's Gavin Rossdale solo. Bush was Gavin, Nigel, Robin, and Dave....no more, no less.

When I first started playing guitar, Bush and Nirvana songs were the first ones I learned. Super basic, but they sounded cool. Greedy Fly and Machinehead are still the songs I warm up with years later.

Dam man me too first was nirvana Polly then lithium the bush glycerin but never could play Nigels Pulsfords’ leads n nirvana never played a real lead except for laundry room I think???

Nobody wanna talk about "Cold Contagious" from Razorblade Suitcase. Or "Strait No Chaser"? I bought the 16 Stone t-shirt at the local alternative shop after saving up money mowing grass back in 95. With some change left over to buy a Tool sticker. Falling asleep listening to "Alien" on the old walkman.
Cold contagious is one of the greatest songs ever written. Greedy fly and mouth are really good too oh yea can't forget tendency to start fires damn it's so awesome. Razorblade suitcase is one of my favorite albums ever

I saw them in Jersey opening up for AIC in Aug 2022. What a totally amazing, energetic show they put on. Personally, I think they stole the show just with the amount of heart they put into it. Much respect.
Bush was lowkey one of my favorites in the late-ninties. Oddly, I got into their catalog well before discovering Nirvana.

Up until a few years ago the only thing I knew about bush was what radio played. Thanks too CZcams and their algorithms I stumbled across bush at 99 Woodstock and they made me wish I was there . Rock n Roll will never die

Golden State was an underrated record. "Headful of Ghosts" rocks your houses.
personally i like their 3rd and 4th album much more then the first 2. the 1st album has many great singles, but the b-sides are weak, the 2nd album is a bit more balanced but still many of those problems remain. not til the 3rd album where i felt the entire album minus 1 track was really good, even though the singles suffer, and not as memorable as in the first 2 albums. then you have golden state. love that album. might be my favorite from the band. the most balanced album they made. the entire album is good. after that i haven't really liked anything they have made in any versions of the band. not in either rossdale bands or the reunion of the band.
I remember the listening stations in the Virgin megastores. I would always go to the one in downtown SF that was 3 stories, and my first stop was always the listening stations near the registers. Listening to samples of a new album was so exciting back then.
I didn't even know who Bush was when I saw them open for breaking Benjamin and Alice n chains in Denver September 2022 but I really enjoyed their show. The front man was running around the entire arena while singing and high fiving fans. Although I didn't know any of their music I respected the heart they all put into the performance and would recommend seeing them
I love Bush. I have loved them since there begins. I'm 42 yrs old now and miss the 90s music. It was real music and the best of all time. Also the 90s seem so much better back then.
Greedy Fly was the best song on Suitcase, first album was an instant classic...great band.
I realize I’m super late to this one, but I have to brag that this was my very first concert!
I was 8 years old (mid-30’s now!) and it was a show in Seattle! They were unbelievably just… phenomenal.

The Science of Things is the most overlooked and underappreciated album of all the Bush albums.
I checked out of Bush fandom after 16 Stone but damn that album still pops to this day.
They were a little overplayed by radio in their hayday and most of the singles I grew a little bored with. However when I listen to them today they still truly shine
Razorblade Suitcase, their 2nd album, was just as good. You should give it a listen sometime

Nothing makes me feel the way I do when I hear bush ! It’s romantic, dramatic, rageful, sad and really so many things - all in a good way. They helped shape a lot of my personal music and hbe been an inspiration to me. Bush has also set the mood in my house or in my car on many many early mornings, afternoons and late nights.

During his solo career in the mid 2000's Gavin did a song with the Blue Man Group called The Current for The Terminator 3 soundtrack and Adrenaline for the movie XXX that are good

I remember listening to sixteen stone late at night in 8th grade in my parents living room and just loving it. Come down was always my favorite.
Never much a fan, but always did like Comedown.
I was one of those teens obsessed with them.... but now after growing and evolving years later and discovering the Real Truth(what TV doesn't tell the public 😉).. they're just like everybody else*....
I remember not liking Bush at first when I heard them, but secretly I loved Machinehead and Glycerine on the radio... many many decades later, I own Sixteen Stone 3 times.. 2 on cd, and 1 on vinyl.
There was a cafe in East Hollywood in the early 2000’s called Espresso Mi Cultura
One day I saw Gavin sitting outside rolling a cigarette . Turned to my then-girlfriend and said “baby I think that’s the guy from Bush” Then once inside I turned to my right to see Gwen Stefani standing there. When I got back in the car I smiled & said “yep that’s him” -pretty typical day in LA 😂😂

As someone who grew up at the time, "STP sounds like Pearl Jam" and "Bush sounds like Nirvana" are just two things I cannot get at all.
I just saw them at the Salt Shed in Chicago on Saturday. Oh my God, they rocked it. It was spectacular. Gavin ran into the crowd and was high fiving people in the aisle seats during "Flowers On A Grave". I can't believe i was that close to him. The other band they headlined with (Silversun Pickups) put on a good show too.
Thats great but nothing after Golden State was really Bush... not with Nigel gone... Sound of WInter, Flowers on a Grave, & Bullet Holes are really good songs overall... but they are far from the sound of Bush's first few albums...
I was in high school when I heard BUSH for the first time. It was around 93’-94’ and they are still my favorite band today.. Warm Machine, Alien and Swallowed are 🔥🔥🔥and I finally got to see them in San Antonio around 2013….. wasn’t aware of any of this but glad I found this page… The Pixies “Trompe le Monde” also 🔥🔥🔥🔥

It took me a while to warm up to Bush. When I got into alternative rock, Razorblade Suitcase had just come out and Swallowed was inescapable. I still hate that song to this day. It wasn't until I went back and found some of the much better songs on 16 Stone that I started to appreciate them.
I really liked them back in the day and their first two albums totally hold up for me. The guy can write a song and esp on RS they had such a lovely noisy vibe to guitar playing
Loved that song Distant Voices.
Highly recommend their most recent album. Has that same rawness as those first two bangers.
The Kingdom is an amazing album. It could be more diverse but I love the lyrics. Why it hasn't caught on is beyond me.
I loved Bush when i was a teenager. My fave song was Comedown which i ended up finding out was about Suze DiMarchi. She was lead singer of a band called Baby Animals here in Australia and i had the biggest crush on her growing up. Had no idea they were a item back then. Saw Baby Animals live a few months back, they are still brilliant and i recommend anyone to check them out if they haven't previously.

It looked like they were so busy touring 16 Stone that they threw a chick on a bike and live clips in a vid just to keep fans happy for Machinehead, great song. 16 Stn is still one of my all time favorite plays. It's just about perfect all the way threw.😎✌
I took my kids to see them on July 3rd 2022 at Hollywood Casino in Grantville, PA. ...fantastic show, tons of energy! Sure only Gavin is left, but damn that didn't stop them from rocking out! ...I told a few people I was taking my teenage kids to go see Bush and so many of them said 'never heard of them' - haha, WHAT?! you've never HEARD Bush?! Blows my mind! They were such a large part of my teenage years.
I loved bush. They were one of the few bands that actually played jackson mississippi and I got to see them. I usually had to drive to New Orleans to see bands
Went to see a three band show with STP, Bush and The Cult in Birmingham Al, Bush was my least favorite of the three at the time but they ended up stealing the damn show. Gavin was up in the Audience and aisles, all over the place just tons of damn energy even to this day, made me a much bigger fan seeing them live. 👍

Bush was part of life in the 90s
I was and am still a huge Bush fan. As a guitarist, I would like to point out that the *main* way that Bush is divergent from a band like Nirvana is/was...Nigel Pulsfor. As a lead guitarist, he seemed to have a different idea about how to create soundscapes and integrating noise into his parts. The Science of Things really showed his fascination with the use of stomp boxes for instance.
Nigel was definitely the difference maker. I've never really been impressed with Chris Traynor's instrumental-writing or his playing of Nigel's written parts. Nigel just had a style all his own.
@@WarmothGuitarist As a guy that grew up getting lessons and my instructor was very much teaching me scales and how to be a lead guitarist, I just always really liked Nigel Pulsfor's sense of how to use his guitar as well as effects and kind of blend it all. I also really love Botch for the same reason.

Definitely. Nigel was very good at adding atmosphere with little bleeds of feedback or delayed notes. Always made me wonder "what in the world made him think to put THAT there?", but it always fit perfectly.
Another player that is really good at it is Billy Howerdell.

Bush might've been late to the grunge party, but their sound fits right in with Alice, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana.

Hell yes. I absolutely love that movie and its soundtrack (A Perfect Circle as Constantine walks through Midnight's bar...squee!). I was surprised he didn't mention his acting career, but I suppose rock music is the theme here. Thanks for mentioning it! Cheers! 🤘🏻🌬🍷
I saw them as a casual fan in 2019 and they were electric live. Huge fan now. Check out The Kingdom it’s really good

Funny story. I lived in Fresno, CA back around 2012 and live near an amphitheater nearby where I lived. One late summer night I went outside and I heard some music blasting far in the distance. I didn't pay it much attention at first, but after about 30 seconds I started picking up some familiar sounding melodies. It was Bush! Lol. My brother and I got in his car and drove over to the amphitheatre. Sure enough, Bush was playing and we were able to catch the last 5 or so songs. Heard comedown as we got there. Then Gavin walked off to a car nearby waiting. There weren't many people at the show. One of the most spontaneous moments of my life.
Sixteen Stone is a flawless album. I loved a few of their albums, and highly recommend Golden State album. Although it didnt get much love in 2001, I think it's just as good as Sixteen Stone. I've seen Bush live a few years back and they were still pretty good. They arent the same band today, after the original band members left... they never been the same.
I think The Science of Things is their best album. I don't really even like any of their other music, but that album is so good!

Everybody talk about the firsts 3 albums, and they're really good. I think The Sea of Memories is a solid album too.
In Canada, every Bush record got the "Bush X" name on it, because there's an obscure canadian band from the 70's also named Bush. As a kid I really taught Rossdale's band was Bush X.

Since you’re doing a lot British acts now can you look into The Happy Mondays/Black Grape and the hard partying of Shaun Ryder. Or even the story of rock fans/couple Dennis and Lois (also tied to Happy Mondays). If you’re not familiar with the stories look into them, they’re really interesting.
When I was like 13 I had a Razorblade Suitcase shirt, and when I was delivering newspapers, some Boomer that I passed on my paper route asked me if that was a shirt for the beer brand Busch.
