    The reason Malcolm at the end was pissed was because Brent couldn't take the job because he failed a medical exam, but he tried to make out like he gave it up cos he cares for the team. What else could he do? He failed the medical, had to keep his old job and would have to go back to a workplace where everyone hates him and no one trusts him. So he pretended he turned down the job to look like a hero.

  • @andrewmarkland4231
    @andrewmarkland4231 Před 18 dny +6

    The difference between American shows and British shows is that Americans tend to make the main character a hero. Michael Scott is the lovable eccentric boss with a heart of gold. David Brent is a spineless try-hard. His colleagues are the people you should sympathise with as they have to put up with him.

    • @johnhamilton7762
      @johnhamilton7762 Před 13 dny

      I'd add to that by saying British shows are more subtle with their humour and less 'gag-a minute'. Irony and sarcasm are rare in US comedies whereas it is richer in UK (eg The Office, The Royle family, The Inbetweeners etc). I guess it's because the US tv audience is generally dumber (40% of Americans cannot point to the Pacific ocean on a globe).

    You two seem to stare at a lot of subtle comedy with blank expressions, and you are clearly yet to understand Brent and his mannerisms. This series is hilarious. This classic clearly shows the differing humour across the sea and why the show was completely different when remade. He failed the medical and made out that he turned his back on the promotion to be seen as loyal and stay with his "bunch" to be liked-everything he does is to be liked! 😆
    I'll try and summarise his character. David Brent wants to be liked and respected by his employees. He tries hard to be seen as a fun, cool boss rather than just a typical manager. He tries to be funny and entertaining, but his humor is usually misguided and cringeworthy. He is desperate for attention and approval, frequently boasting about his (often exaggerated) talents and achievements. He tries to maintain authority but often ends up undermining his own position through his need to be liked. His lack of self-awareness and desperate need for approval make him both a comedic and somewhat tragic figure. I hope that clarifies a few things. You can't take anything he does seriously or with a straight face.

    • @garethm3242

    • @JemmaH153
      @JemmaH153 Před 16 dny +2

      Yes, the first series is basically a study in narcissistic personalities and how they interact. Gareth hero-worships Brent, while Brent keeps him around because he loves the attention. In turn, Brent hero-worships Finchy who is a much slicker and more successful narc, since his wise-cracking, sexually manipulative attitude is exactly what Brent dreams of having but lacks the social skill to achieve. Then Brent discards Gareth and the rest of his "beloved team" the moment he thinks he's achieved better form of status; i.e. promotion. Later, on losing the opportunity, he attempts to recover his status with the team by making out that he sacrificed it for them.
      It's bizarre and somewhat worrying that people can see Brent doing all this throughout a whole series and not really comment on it.

    Personally i prefer the honed down few episodes with a story line that is fleshed out for a few hours and has a conclusion.
    The US network productions tend to go on too long and can just abruptly stop.
    Its hard to get invested into a series that can be cancelled at the drop of a hat or ratings.

    • @wulfgold
      @wulfgold Před 19 dny

      It's a weird strategy, show becomes a hit + the US milk it for ad revenue and a lot of series' go on way too long due to it and there's also the Writer's Room thing where a lot of things are by committee that have plotlines dissatifactorily resolved (Lost being a prime example), whereas UK stuff often seems the creative vision of a small team that are all onboard with the same vision. Pros/cons, but I'd rather have the UK short-run that's more coherent and it feels more satisfying and special - Brit stuff might be a bit flash in the pan, but when it's a good-flash it burns bright.
      I also think Brit advertisers are more savvy, they want their products associated with "new exciting thing" and not necessarily "comfy regular slot". The difference in actual advertising is notable. The amount of outright "weird" adverts the UK has speaks a lot to the psyche of Brits, but it's also pretty damn smart how "Gorilla playing drums" = choco or Marmite have entered the zeitgiest. Weird to say, but maybe the UK's a bit more "peppy" and finger on the pulse in this respect, whereas the US adverts are more "soothing pharma"-oriented.

    I've started losing my hair at 34 years old. I can't just "let it go" because I'd look ridiculous bald. I look ridiculous now with thin hair at the front so I always have to wear a hat. I'm thinking maybe tattoo some hair on with a stick-and-poke until reliable hair growing technology comes along.
    Oh and by the way the scene with David sacking Jeff is my favourite of the whole series. Jeff has a great hairline.

    The US version is worth watching. I have watched it at least 5 times. Season 1 tries to copy the Office UK stories but hit their stride in the second season.

    Don't bother with the US office!! Not a patch on the UK version. They ran and ran it way too long.

      The US version is very good for about 5 series. Totally different vibe though

      Definitely ran too long but there are still some hilarious episodes.
      The original is a masterpiece of comedy but the US version had it's moments certainly better than the US version of the Inbetweeners

    The US Office is brilliant - first ep is awful and just is a copy but after that it soars away on its own and is brilliant
