  • "The Bells of Rhymney" is a song first recorded by folk singer Pete Seeger, using words written by Welsh poet Idris Davies. The lyrics to the song were drawn from part of Davies' poetic work, "Gwalia Deserta", which was first published in 1938. The work was inspired by a local coal mining disaster and by the failure of the 1926 General Strike. The Byrds recorded the song in 1965 and included it on their debut album, "Mr. Tambourine Man." They turned it into a Folk Rock song, featuring Jim McGuinn, playing his Rickenbacker 12 string guitar. My cover was recorded using a Rickenbacker V64 360-12, with standard tuning, and an Epiphone Sheraton tuned to drop D. Drum samples, bass and organ were played on a Roland Juno G keyboard. All instruments and vocals were performed by me.

This is a very, very, very nice rendition of this classic Byrds/Pete Seeger song using a Rickenbacker 12-string and a flat pick. Well done, John!

+Nipstersongs1 Thanks, Jim. I've had a love hate relationship with that Rickenbacker ever since I bought it, years ago. Loved the way it sounds, hated the way it played, due to the narrow string spacing and general poor setup. I finally did something about it and bought a new nut with wider string spacing, set the nut action, polished the frets, installed new strings, adjusted the truss rods, string height, and intonation, and now it plays great! Thanks again for checking out the video!

Great! Great! version of Bells of Rhymney. I have loved this song ever since I first heard it by the Byrds in 1968 walking the campus of Indiana University. It's my favorite song of all time, and your interpretation is (almost, and sometimes better than) the McGuinn, Crosby, Hill, Gene Clark and Michael Clarke's original. I'm a huge fan.

John - This song is so important to me that I actually made a pilgrimage to Rhymney Wales in 1991 on one of my European trips. I actually heard "The Bells of Rhymney" ring at the Church, and had the town's librarian make a copy from the Idris Davies Book containing the original poem. Again, your rendition is fantastic.

Hooray!! I signed onto You Tube tonight, in the mood to hear this song. I'm a huge Byrds fan, but usually I look for covers because, when I find a good one, it does my heart good that the music is being kept alive. Yours is the first one I clicked on tonight and I need go no further. OMG, excellent and thank you. I have two requests, being a big Gene Clark fan. If you feel so inclined, I would love to hear you cover, "She Don't Care About Time" and especially, "Here Without You." Thank you again for keeping the "velvet harmonies and Rick alive!!!

Excellent work! Just one point - I believe the penultimate chord just prior to the outro at 3:34 should be A, and not E.
