I have been playing this game for months and I just now learned that the purple bar is for enemies health
It took me a hot minute as well 😅😅😅
Wait really, I thought that was adrenaline or something.... god I'm dumb
This hole time didn't know either I thought it was your armour health for some reason
Thanks for the help 😂 I never knew at all
It tells you in the instructions
It doesn’t matter how many tutorials I watch and how much I practice, the combat system on this game is still an absolute mystery to me.
It's really hard I gave up
Blocking is most important
its tough
I thinksnits designed for a mouse. But you can still do it with a controller
i bet it would have been much easier if YOUR attacks weren't fuckin capped at 50% speed and the enemies wouldnt attack at fuckin 200% speed.
Love the combat of this game. One criticism I do have though is how overly aggressive the AI is in combat and always moving forward. Half of my fights I end up a half a mile away from where I started.
I haven’t played since 2018-19.
I’m about to start getting back into it myself, with a fresh new game. I vividly remember the combat and how I (personally) would go into a blind rage every time I had my enemies at their last leg of health and my damn arrogance would leave them an opportunity to make that saving combo, mortally wounding Henry.
Good times, lol.

Then he went back to Captain Bernard.
AFAIK, those are 2 different characters, both captains of the guard, Bernard of Rattay and Robard of Talmberg.
Captain Robard is the guy in the thumbnail btw haha
lmaooo im like wheres robard at. did i miss training with robard lol
Kenshi Masaki Yeah wtf! 😂 What a dumbass

Weird. I also thought about the child being a girl for some reason
You have to complete the ginger in a pickle quest before Bernard returns to the rattay arena. So if he isn’t there finish that quest and look for him again.
The man who plays captain Bernard actually used to be a helicopter pilot in Nam… Guy has some incredible story’s!
I’ve been working non stop for the last 13 hours to get these 3 videos out today and did not eat lunch so I’m going to edit and upload the next episode some time tomorrow. Sorry there are not enough hours in a day!
Hi ESO your the best CZcamsr
love and appreciate all the daily videos! don't forget to take care of yourself too danny! :)
ESO, this guy is Bernard*. Robard is the friendlier captain in Talmberg. :)
pls upload part 13😢
Its bernard...
First game I've given up on I think. I want to love it so much, and in most moments I do, but every time I'm fighting even one bandit I'm reminded of how much I suck at the combat. I can't even run away properly because it seems like your opponents have their own gravitational fields
I was on the fence about the game myself for a while... the lockpicking eventually became easier.. I still suck terrible at fighting but if you keep putting time in you'll see the games is truly outstanding
This game would be a 9.5 "no game is a 10" if it wasn't for the combat. I get they didnt want to make it super easy, but this is to far the other way. The fact that you need to back up everytime there is more than one enemy is proof. You shouldn't have to gimmick a game to beat it.
I feel you man....even when I feint the enemies I'm fighting still manage to block every fucking move I throw out....not even riposte are safe from omniscient bandits.
Practice guy I can take 4 guys a once quote easy just gotta get better with the sword 👍
I can only handle 1 dude at a time so everytime i have people helping me fight i let them do it and hit the people in the back it is really hard to be honourable in that game
When in combat why do I feel like I’m standing in 10 feet of water trying to wave a 500lbs sword around
Might be using a sword without the appropriate strength
Nathaniel wowchuk hey I think I got all the cheats running lol
@@nathanielwowchuk6880 honeslty kind of a weird concept to have weapons lvl locked. Like, you can still use them but your slow af and it takes all your stam lmfao

Thank you SO MUCH! I'm really struggling with the combat in this game. I'm still pretty low level - 3's & 4's - and everyone says that training with Captain Bernard is the key but honestly, I find him too fast and aggressive and just spend all my time backing up. I really wish I could do the initial training sessions with him again. This video taught me several important things I didn't know - such as stamina protecting health, I had no idea there was that connection. You gained a sub from me.
Go back and train more with the Cap. Calm your nerves and pay attention.
@@417fga Well....two years ago when I left this comment I did just that and got on much better, thank you :)

@@rhetthenderson5993 He couldn't have told her that, he knows nothing.
The locking system in multi combat is pathetic
Matthew Bengston
Absolutely!!
Not only that changing the lock onto another enemy often doesn’t work often so that another enemy can easily go behind you while you fight someone else but the lockon often pulls you ahead when the enemy steps back even while you are pressing the key to the opposite direction.
It simply draws you with it and then you find yourself suddenly surrounded by a group of enemies instead in front of them.
Horrible!
@@Celisar1 well its kinda realistic though. A 1v3+ would get messy fast.
Clyde Frog
My criticism was about the lock on that drags you forward when you are trying to move backwards so that you end up in a critical situation that gets you killed.
@@Celisar1 Hows the lock on system programmed in your game? Oh yea you dont make games
Clyde Frog
So, only people who make games are allowed to criticise something in a game?
Really??
Think about your nonsense for a moment.
For as much as the combat is all good and immersive, I also feel as if it’s way too hard on new players. If you don’t constantly train, every enemy you come across, no matter how weak, will kill you. Players should be more slowly introduced into the combat system instead, or else many will be turned away from the game entirely.
While it is rough, the Captain does teach you quite well on what to do (as opposed to the trainer at the very start). You also get some extra combat training when you find random bandits and quest npcs in Rattay and Skalitz. It's like Dark Souls 3 where I spent a good 2 or so hours trying to kill Gundyr xD Just gotta take it seriously and you'll find it's very fun and capable if you're quick and attentive.
Aidan Snyder
I’m 1 day into the game and never used lock picking. Possibly the worst “mini game” thing I’ve ever seen On a video game
@@MichaelJ44 Just gotta get the hang of it. Or you could turn it on simplified if it's so hard, but it doesn't really change anything so yeah
@@MichaelJ44 ‐ it gets easier the more you do it. That goes with anything in that game. I hated it too until I leveled up the skill and got perks that helped out tremendously. Also your character doesn't mess up as much.
*gets ass kicked by that first drunk guy you're supposed to get money from*
Well that's an uninstall from me
Wonder how many people are here after getting their shit kicked in by the town drunk Kunesh 😂
The worst part of the game in my opinion. I reset 12 times until I beat him, I get the key, I get arrested for stealing even though he gave me the key.
Guys, wtf kinda intro is this
I went so long neglecting the main quest, when I finally started doing it and discovered the perfect block I felt so dumb. Like man no wonder melee combat was so hard lmao I didn't have all the tools. I've been using the bow a lot and can usually drop bandits in two hits unless they're in plate. I poison the arrows too because I'm a scumbag lol.
Don't feel bad i have played this game for about a year and I just found out that the purple bar means the enemy's health
The riposte happens when the green shield first appears. The perfect block happens when you block when the green shield lights up. It's not random though the riposte only happens if both characters are in "range" or other enemies will interrupt it.
1 tip I have for combos is that right and bottom left are connected and left and bottom right are connected meaning if you keep pressing attack without switching directions they use those stances repeatedly so for a lot of combos at the end you don’t have to switch so you can for instance the longest combo in longsword with 5 attacks is really just left right slash slash slash so it is much easier to remember
Thank you so much, this was super helpful, especially the interface explanation! I had no idea that the purple bar was enemy health - I thought it was a second health bar for serious wounds.
Not sure if this has been mentioned already, but a riposte (master stroke) isn't random. I can make it happen almost 100% of the time if I start blocking exactly as the hands start to come down. If I wait just a fraction of a second longer, it doesn't happen. So, not random. :) I'm not sure if your weapon skill matters, though - I found that it got a bit easier to do as I approached level 20 in sword, so that might be part of it too.
Can someone help me understand feints a bit more do you change direction once you let go of holding attack or change it just before you let go to attack
Thanks for making this video dude. Just picked up a few tips and this helped clear some confusion.
Banging!!
So Captain Bernard have dual personalities...when he's on fighting mode he summonss the inner Captain Robard.
Thank you for the Video, ESO! And thank you for this:
1. Hold your Attack button at one angle.
2. Quickly change to the opposite angle.
3. Release your attack button.
I didn't know we kept holding the attack button xD Thanks m8!
Amazingly explained,thank you so much!
These tips are so useful. I've been playing for around half a year and just learned that a feint is done like that.
I've always wanted a game with really in-depth sword and board combat. No RPG has scratched that itch but this game is perfect
zhain0 it’s not perfect but it’s well made compared to other rpg’s combat system.
Just wishing Mordhau had a RPG in the works
Then you will have to play Mordhau, not this game...
A game with a For Honor battle system as an RPG would be amazing !
I think this game is just simply broken, it wasn't finished and ready for release. They hit deadlines and had to ship what they had. The combat is really bad.
I also love the perk that makes your weapons cause more bleed damage. You can cut one opponent, sik your dog on him, and then fight a 2nd or 3rd opponent and have a high chance at surviving.
thank you for this i was having some trouble figuring this system out
Thank you so much for this video I'll try this when I go home from work.
Riposte is not random, you riposte when you block immidiatly when your enemy just begins to swing his sword at you 👍
I thought that was the case the timing is more strict than the normal perfect block
Exactly, it's NOT random. You have to press block after the attacker starts the attacking animation and before the shield shows up.
Why isnt this comment at the top?
Wrong guys wrong thats perfect block what you talk about Riposte is done by pressing bock and attakc at same time simultianously at perfect time block.
Jiří Dušek
No. You're wrong, and correcting someone who's correct with bad information makes you look quite stupid
Lol had no idea stamina was a shield. You just saved me from the brain anuerism I had forming by being spanked so much in this game not knowing that.
Used to love your Skyrim videos, so glad you made KCD vids as well, great work as always
Thanks for making this video cause I thought I was doing good with leveling up but I wanted to make sure
Honestly about the perfect block: I noticed that if you perfect block right as they start the animation of swinging you will hit the riposes always and it's not character skill based, well player skill based it is, as los long as you hit it at the time he starts swinging boom counter, i mashed captain ber-rebard by perfect blocking.
Good guide, but you missed some key elements.
1. Perfect block does benefit from the direction of your weapon, although it is not necessary. Basically, if you match the direction of your weapon to the direction of your enemy's weapon, the window of opportunity to perform perfect block is higher. Perfect block followed up by well timed attack can only be dodged or parried by perfect block or master strike, otherwise it is a guaranteed hit.
2. Master Strike is not random. In order to perform it you need to block at the very moment the green shield appears (often a moment before it even appears so you need to watch your opponent's movement). If you are too slow, you will perform a perfect block instead. Similar to the above, if you match your opponent's stance, window for Master Strike is higher.
This was confirmed by the dev on the official forums. And an advise from my end - if the group is too tough for you, mount up, circle around them while shooting arrows and thin that group down ;) Although once you spend some time with Robard, the game becomes too easy.
Thank's for this, probably the best video on this I've seen
ESO, you are and always will be my first go to for any game info. Your videos are so helpful and I want you to know I appreciate them very much. You da man bro. 🙏🏻👊🏻
Its hilarious that i ended up thinking the only way to parry was to block while matching the sword direction like for honor. That would make this game 10x harder.
Respectfully, I think you should have covered clinches. I could see a lot of new players getting into loads of clinches (probably accidentally like I did), and I think knowing what to do would be important for them. Plus clinches are a little OP once you know how to win each and every one of them.
HOW?? please I keep getting my teeth knocked in
@@Thegoatbirdman You really need the Perk for winning 30% more clinches, and then press the attack button very early into a clinch. Success depends on how high level the opponent is.
@@jonathanbergeron5833 do you spam click attack button, or is it time based such as parrying? I have the perk now.
@@Thegoatbirdman press it once early in the clinch. As early as possible. I think spam clicking gets you beaten.

Great video. I have been very disheartened by the combat so far but your instruction here has made me feel a bit better about it and I will go back to the game with greater enthusiasm.
Hell yeah dude this vid helped a ton, nice one keep it up :D
I feel sometimes a game being too realistic hurts it more than helps, the combat in this game is a good example of that. The fact that even if you can master the combat and still get rip to pieces by lowly bandits isn't fun.
Personally I disagree. It changes the pace of the game a lot and humbles you, it helps with the role play of the kind of person Henry is--a lowly blacksmiths son.
i'm impressed that they were able to make a combat system that reflects actual sword combat pretty well.
this has to be the gold-standard for every upcoming rpg
It really doesn't take this long to attack with swords. THEY ARE NOT THAT FUCKING HEAVY, YES REALLY. This system is fucking awful.
@@TheFleeingPhoenix I mean...Medieval combat is actually hard though and complex. Plus, it depends on what sword your using and your stats.
Except it takes 50 stabs to the face to kill a bare naked man
@@superroach3397 I do medieval combat on a weekly basis. It annoys me that I can't be better with a well made sword from the beginning, as any fighter feels instantly better with a well made sword than a cheaper, heavier one. My biggest bug-bear in my short amount of time in the game is how hard fighting two people is, mainly be the reticle having to be focused on one person. I'm up for learning to get good, but a lot of the use of shifting wards is intended for fighting one person. For fighting two I need to be able to pay full attention to both enemies at once.
That said, I'm enjoying the game so far, just annoyed to have lost the same early combat multiple times already, making me feel stuck.
Thank you for this video. I am so glad that I subrcribed because you introduced me to this game and I love it. Thanks. 😁👍
Thanks for the tips! Should come in handy.
This game is so addictive! I didn’t think I was going to like it either.
Thank you my guy, I was constantly wondering why I never countered after perfect blocks, and was getting frustrated whenever someone did it to me; big reason I lost the first tourny I tried.
Noice! This Video is the best i've seen for fighting tips? Well done!!
I love this, I just picked it up for sale on ps4 and it's like Oblivion in so many ways, I haven't felt like this since 2006! I fought three or four guys so far, and usually, that "trick" that bernard teaches you slashes through like a charm. I'm getting better every fight. Seriously, this game is on Oblivion's level.
Can you get back with the main quest please ? Can’t wait to see the camp attack and the rest of the story. Really enjoying your walkthrough 👍

Fair warning to players. After the new patch, the guards WILL search the horse for stolen goods if you have a bounty. Escaped from Sausau fully loaded, put everything stolen on the horse, payed the fine, just to find out that he took gears for about 3000 :(
I know this is an older video, but the Master Strike (unblockable attack after perfect guard) isn't random, it is just a smaller window to do, basically you block the second the weapon starts to move. It is harder to do if you are looking at the little green shield icon, as that normally pops up slightly after the weapon starts to move, hope this helps anyone new to the game!
Keep your eye on the weapon hilt and you'll notice that with practice you'll pull off master strikes much much more consistently.
great video dude. very helpful, thanks!
The lock-on system is really clunky. They should have just done a free-movement Mount and Blade-style system
I really like it
It wouldnt work for this style of combat
@@AlbinoKneecaps Why not?
@@LordSluggo All the attacks, parries and combos are precisely animated, both fighters have to be aligned in a certain way for it to work
@@stanisawptak2509 So it'd be exactly like chambering, especially with the newer system in Bannerlord. Again, doesn't require a constrictive lock-on system
No amount of combat tips can help you with Henry looking away from your opponent when trying to switch gaurds

A bastard sword is actually a 'Hand and a Half' sword, which is slightly different than a long sword. A long sword is just a bit longer.
this is not Dungeon and dragons. Hell this game even introduced itself as dungeons and NO dragons. So dont bother bringing this fantasy bullshit into historical game. There are no hand and half swords.
@@17MrLeon erm...Bastard sword and hand and a half sword are both real things, not invented by DnD. The term hand and a half sword came into usage, according to Wikipedia, in the 19th century, which may just be a little bit before the creation of DnD I think.
Also glad this game doesn't have any fantasy bullshit in it. Like alchemy allowing you to brew magic potions that instantly heal broken bones or anything. Because that would just ruin the historical accuracy.
@@marlondaniels7912 What i wanted to say is it was not used back when swords were used. They just class them like we do today with everything. They just called them all swords.

For instance, there's something called Fehler: Scarmaker, a combo done by doing a lower-left slash then two stabs, are these just suggestions or are they actual unique attacks?
The riposte is actually activated by blocking at the exact moment the green shield icon appears, if you do not block at the correct time you will preform a normal perfect block. I am pretty sure you can only do this after practicing master strikes or ripostes with Captain Bernard.
Yeah, that's how it's done. I'm glad someone else called this out xD
Correct, and infuriating. I want to start over with the skills I've learned, but they're behind a grindwall.

4:20 also just to point out, it really applies to when you are wearing plate armour against a sword. If you have no plate armour on, you will take direct damage. And with danage from a mace may get through. Arrows, depending on type, will bypass the stamina.
