  • In this week’s video, we take the outdoor photography adventure back to Leadville, Colorado, where we hike the Timberline Lake Trail in the San Isabel National Forest. Along the way, I talk about my new Shimoda Explore V2 30-liter camera bag! As a petite female photographer, I struggle to find adventure camera bags that fit my small frame until I discovered the Shimoda Designs camera bags. The Shimoda camera bags can fit a wide variety of individuals and with the interchangeable straps, you can customize it to fit you! As a female photographer, you can select a female-specific camera strap for free when you purchase a bag from the Shimoda website.
    The 5-mile in-and-out trail offers scenic views with a beautiful alpine lake surrounded by mountains and was also the perfect test for the Shimoda camera bag. Is this bag comfy? Yes. Does it fit all my camera gear and more? Yes. Would I recommend this camera bag to other women who struggle to find adventure outdoor camera bags that fit? Absolutely!
    I recommend buying the camera bag directly from the Shimoda Designs website:

    Thank you for sharing, Acacia! The Colorado Rockies have soooo much to offer in the summer. We lived there for 32 years before moving to Oregon and were in and around the Leadville area often. And when you are in that area, Buena Vista can be a great "base camp". As for the Shimoda bags, I love them. All of your comments were spot on. I have had 4 of them beginning with the original Explore and I still have 3. (Yes, I am old and retired and can afford to waste money on my hobby, LOL!). My primary bag is the same as yours. I am a 5'8" male but with a long torso. So I set the straps in the L setting which allows the (excellent) waste belt to sit on my hips. That said, I usually use this bag without the waste belt. As I expect you know by now, reconfiguring the storage is a common thing. And this is OK! Especially if you have different gear setups. If I need to carry more clothing/gear (winter/snow outings) I will carry less camera gear and sometimes use the small mirrorless core unit. And I see you found a spot for your Peak Design Capture mount. Also a great invention and glad it fits (mostly) on your strap! Keep exploring. Be safe. Love your pics.

      Thank you for your commitment and sharing your thoughts on the Shimoda bag. I love Colorado and lived in Leadville and Dillon for 15 years before moving to North Carolina four years ago. So it's was nice to get back there last summer to visit family and friends. I am happy to know you have loved their bags for awhile now. I have been loving the bag and the versatility of it. That and having a camera bag that fits me! And yes...I love the Peak Design camera clip! Soooo handy for my style of photography! Have a fantastic day! 🥾📸😀

    Great video! I'm petite too (5'1") and a medium build and I love the women's tech straps. My phone happens to fit in the front pocket, which I love so much. I also have the petite simple straps and I don't like those, probably just a bit too small for my build. Just thought I would share since you spoke about the straps.

      Thank you Becky for sharing your feedback on the straps. With the added layers needed for cool weather hiking/photographing, I have been finding the petite simple straps a bit too small for my frame. I can't clasp the middle one. 🤪 So the women's tech strap is on my short list, so it is nice to hear from a fellow petite photographer that they work. 📸 Have a fantastic day!

    My first time watching your videos but live in CO so I will be watching more to see new hikes I could plan. Love my 2 Shimodas. I have the 25 and 35 explores. My 35 will be for hikes or probably longer trips and 25 for when I want to go lighter. Even though I am a bigger guy I got the women’s simple on my 25 for a lightweight streamlined carry, but will keep tech strap for hikes for the extra pockets. I really love how responsive Ian and co have been to questions and cannot recommend the brand highly enough.

    I have the same bag. So far so good. I do find that all the pockets are so tight, that they aren't that accessible. Did you know you can tuck the secondary zipper flap on the side into the outer flap. That way you only have to unzip one flap to access your camera. I love that feature. That side access is very handy. It's definitely a bag that takes time to figure out. Safe hiking! 📸

    • @AcaciaFikeNelson

      I definitely don't use all the pockets and even though I have small hands and haven't had too many issues with feeling like the pockets are tight, I would imagine for the average person they would be. Also, no I didn't know you can tuck the secondary zipper flap on the side into the outer flap. I don't use the side zip very often, but that is good to know (*making a mental note to try that out later)! Thanks for the video (just found it)! I'm looking for a hike/camera pack,. Ironically I have same osprey/inset set up you did. Now I have a zoom that is 10" long, and so the old set up wont work as well. First question is will a Sigma zoom lens with mount (10-11") lens fit in the pack for easy access? Second question is when taking photos, how easy is it to quickly grab the camera from the pack while hiking? - And thank you for braving the mosquito swarms for the wonderful video!

    • @AcaciaFikeNelson
      @AcaciaFikeNelson  Před 5 měsíci

      First, sorry for the delay in replying to your comment/questions. Somehow it slipped through the cracks. Without having the exact camera setup, I am going to have to make some guesses. I have the Explorer 30 L pack and the medium mirrorless core unit. My setup wouldn't work with a 10-11" lens because the inside dimensions of the core unit are 10.6" x 10.6". However, the 35 L options with a large core unit might work. Their website has a lot of dimensions for the different bags and core units. Definitely worth checking out.
      As for accessing the side entrance panel and ease of getting the camera out. I struggle to access the side compartment of the bag while wearing the bag or accessing the back compartment, but that might be more of a "I'm short and therefore it's more of a challenge for me" than a design problem. 🤷🏼‍♀️ I only recently swapped out the straps from the women's petite simple straps for the women's tech straps, so previously I was using the Peak Design Capture Clip on the strap and not having to enter the pack unless I was swapping lenses. Sadly, the tech straps are too wide for the clip, so I am trying to get used to entering the bag while it's still attached to my body.
      Overall though I love the bag and my only regret is not waiting a bit longer to get it in teal. 😉😂
      Let me know if you have any other questions! Have a fantastic day! 📸😀

    Did you consider the 35L or 40L or find the 30L is sufficient for day hikes? I have a 200-500mm lens and wonder if I should go for the 35L with the large mirrorless.

    • @AcaciaFikeNelson
      @AcaciaFikeNelson  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I do find the 30L is sufficient for my equipment and day hikes. When I was trying to decide on the bag side, I was actually comparing between the 25L and the 30L because I didn't want something too large because I am so short. I know the interior of the medium mirrorless core unit is 10.6 inches by 10.6 inches so. On Shimoda's website, the pictures for the large mirrorless core unit shows some larger lens in the bag and they also have a guide to help you see what core unit fits best with which bags. I personally have no regrets going with the 30L, any bigger and it would be too burdensome for my under 5ft self. Hope that helps!

    Do you have an update to this vid? Especially regarding the Petite Simple vs. Petite Technical fits. Did you ask them to test and compare the technical strap vs. the simple strap to see how it works for a 4'11" youn'g woman? If not, and a year later you still love this rig, consider doing so... Just a suggestion for additional vender interaction.... I'm not one of the petite folks but have a daughter that is so I relate to this post from experience of trying to be the good Daddy... I personally had a challenge providing her what she needed in some cases... Growing up I had my own challenge... I was left Handed living in the 60's.... I received a baseball glove from my grandparents as mine couldn't afford to buy me one... It was a right handed glove, I was left handed, I had to keep throwing my glove off between pitches... what a disadvantage that was for pitching... this just didn't work.
