  • What was once top of the line is now nearly forgotten. Thousands of people can see Farm Beautiful as they drive along a busy stretch of Interstate 94 in central Minnesota. The buildings on this farmstead are unusual. They appear to be composed of small circular field stones. About 90 years ago, this farmstead was one of the newest, best equipped, and well-known in Minnesota. Today, one farm family near St. Cloud is keeping Farm Beautiful from becoming another lost relic. The main barn and a good portion of this farmstead have been preserved, allowing future generations a chance to see it. See how Farm Beautiful came to be, where it is located, and what is left of it.

That real American engineering at its best. Really needs to be saved and studied by future generations.

I grew up in central MN and for a brief time, in 1984, I lived a quarter mile east of this place. The Zabinski's owned it then and always took immaculate care of the property. I still drive past it when I make trips back to my hometown and marvel at the sturdy architecture. I am glad to finally know the backstory on this unique property. Thank you for your efforts and the great story.

Zabinski surname sounds like Polisch , and translate that surname to English means Froggish :)

It extended a would-be short term economic downturn into years of misery. At least we have a few nice examples make work projects to look at now.

I see this unique place every time I go to cities or return from metro to Alexandria area. Been traveling 94 since it was built in 60's and I was teaching in Eastern WI and SE MN.

LoL, what do you mean? Like the soil seems a bit tough or doesn't appear to have a good layer of black top soil? Just curious.

If you look at some of the aerial photos the corn near the farmstead looks spotty, maybe an old road, or clearing and not topsoil?

I love these videos but I can't help pointing out that only 20 year's prior to the construction of farm beautiful, the construction of the st. Mary's basilica in Minneapolis was completed.

Joseph helped erect 500 barns, Crazy. The stone barn was very nice but i was wondering why Joseph alowed the wood beams to stick out to the elements on the walls. He was a 69 year old carpenter. And after that many years u understand to build with extended overhangs and no wood exposed. The morter, cement and bricks will last much longer. Definitely not putting him down. He must have had his own ideas.

@@Dragonogrado if I would trim the beams closer to the building ? Do you know why it was done that way ?

I need to ask my Schellinger cousins. They might know the answer. My uncle, Francis Schellinger, who carried on with his brothers, Paul and Louie, the family carpentry business, used to put ropes high up in trees and we would swing from them. Maybe those rafter extensions had ropes tied to them.

Do you know the address of the Project 5 house? It looks just like one that a family I know lived in right next to the hospital.
