I cant believe you came up with that completely original fossil joke yourself. Its a hilarious completely original joke and I've never heard it before anywhere else
For future challenge would be good adding the rule that you only adhere to the proper rules as soon as you get a permited move is learned. In this for example you'd be able to start the game using tackle and growl, but you MUST learn leech seed or capture a Weedle as soon as realistically possible. You know, the same way nuzlokes only adhere to the "one per route" rule when they get their first PokeBall(s)
For future challenges, absolutely. I really only didn’t do it here because I could catch Weedle before ever gaining any experience with Bulbasaur. But that won’t always be the case for sure
Haha I’m glad to hear that! I mentioned this on Twitter, but Spike is always going to be voiced by somebody different. Sometimes friends of mine, sometimes fans of the channel, sometimes other content creators
This was a neat concept for a video. The intro and outro were great. I would never have guessed Matthew has a medical license considering how much he blew on packs after he lost to you. I wish I had his credit line. I recently started up a playthrough of Pokemon HeartGold and I decided to add a Sandshrew to my team. I wanted to name it in honor of you. II was a female so I figured since your channel is a combination of James Bond and Pokemon I should do something similiar with the name. 18:32 The game *says* Vine Whip isn't very effective, but that's actually a glitch. Because of the way the game determines whether to show a type-effectiveness message, whenever a move is super-effective against one of a Pokémon's types and not-very-effective against the other, the game will erroneously display either a super-effective or a not-very-effective message (based on which matchup it checked first; it checks them in a set order). However, the move will in fact do neutral damage, and this will be applied correctly in damage calculation. The low damage was simply a matter of the numbers involved -- Ivysaur has decent-but-not-great Special and is using a weak move, while Gyarados has high Special and HP.
I have two ideas for challanges in TGC: The Ash% taken from pokémon yellow. Basically you have to have the team Ash was using against every gym member in the anime. Either by pretending Amy is Misty and so on, or by using the ROM hack (that can be found somewhere on the internet) where all the gym masters are changed to that of the Kanto gym leaders. It's up to you how close you wan't the follow the challenge ect. if you feel like getting the 30 Tauros like in the anime or not. ;) The other challenge I have for you is basically a nuzlocke. Everytime you lose a fight you can't use the pokémons in that deck anymore. You can choose if you wan't to ban the species entirely or just the number of them you used (ect. if you lose with a deck including 3 Pikachu and you have 5 in your collection to last 2 are still usable). I've tried to do the same thing with energies and trainers but that makes the challenge too hard and basically makes it a no death run challenge. Another restriction for keeping you from spamming poor Matthew: You can only fight each trainer one time each. I recommend starting with the Imakumi fight (saving the game and reset), followed by one battle with the energy dude! Hope you like my ideas and are up for the challenge! :)
@@Paraspectre That's awesome! Call me the Mimebro then! Looking forward to see witch one it is! :D The hacking scene on TGC is quitle limited. I've only been able to find 2. The Mint's adventure and the Kanto hack. Mint's adventure is just you beeing able to play as Mint from the second game in the first game. The Kanto hack has new attacks and spritework on all cards as well as matching red/blue in many aspects. But i'm sure you already knew all this stuff! Hope you'll have time to talk about the Kanto hack someday. :)
So in regards to Brock, you probably should have opened with Bulbasaur to leech seed Geodude putting it on a 16 turn time limit. From there you could probably switch your pokemon and use the limited number of potions around to stall for time (and maybe attack with Beedrill if he was out and at good health to hopefully get Brock to use a Full Heal which would cure the poison but not the leech seed). Then come Onix you do the same thing. Between the Defense Curls, Screeches, Bides, and healing that Leech seed gives (not to mention the occasional potion) this would allow you to win, but instead of stalling for turns with Growl which isn't in the deck, you'd have stalled with switching and potions which are in the deck. Also I agree with your move replacements, the only one that I think that you could add would potentially be replacing flail on Magikarp with Splash (as it moves similarly and is the only move that could replace flail). Not that this would help much but it'd just mean that if you wanted to stall for turns using Splash it'd still be within the rules. Edit: Also the reason Koga was really dumb, Koga has 'good AI' this means that when he sees a super-effective move he'll always go for it, however the AI is bugged in the same way the text-box is bugged. It checks the interaction of poison attacks vs the bug type before poison attacks vs poison types, so he sees that since poison is super effective against bugs he will only use poison attacks, and items, against Beedrill thinking it's super effective despite being neutrally effective. This is also the reason that Beedrill and Ivysaur will also be able to basically trivialize Lance later as his Dragonite and Dragonairs know Agility and Barrier, so they'll only ever use those moves since they're technically super-effective (and given that the AI has unlimited PP they'll never run out).
That’s true, switching out is in a way a “do nothing” button. Ah well, either way, I’m still waiting around many turns for Leech Seed to knock them out anyway
I feel like this was a really cool and original idea. I was 7 or 8 when the tcg came out in the US and instead of an allowance my dad would bring me 3 packs and a Holo card every Saturday.
The more I think about Parasect the worse it gets. Ok, the fungus takes over. But to what degree? Is there any "Paras" left at all? And the new host is sentient. Is it Its own being? Or adopts where Paras left off? How much of Paras is actually in Parasect. Does the fungi knows it is one? Could it be that both beings were fused into our crusty friend? What means to be one self. What means to be.
What a clever setup for a challenge run video. I knew Gyarados > Magikarp but I never before considered how it grows 10 times as long and weighs 25 times as much. What was in those candies you fed it?!
According to the Helix Chamber, Star Freeze was possibly Starmie's Signature Move originally and was replaced by Rock Slide (why the sound effect sounds a bit off.) That the card game was developed at the same time was the original game hence they have moves that didn't make it into the game fully, but ended up on the card as it was developed before the release of Red/Green
@@Paraspectre considering there were 39 Pokémon that didn't make the cut and tons of moves, it would be interesting to see what the original Kanto was going to be like with the capsule idea as well.

Ok so IDK how much you know about Gen 1's janky mechanics, but since there was no explanation when they came up I'll play teacher here for you or anyone in the comments. So when the text said NOT VERY EFFECTIVE when you vine whipped the Gayrados, that is actually a glitch. So every dual type pokemon is listed in the game's memory as a signal type for display purposes NOT calculations, so your vine whip did the proper amount of damage. The display thinks Gayrados is a pure flying type, but the calculator knows better. When Koga's Muk spammed poison gas, that is a guaranteed behavior if your pokemon is "weak" to poison moves. All major boss fights in Red and Blue have what is known as "Good AI", simply meaning that they won't use moves randomly like trainers and wild pokemon. The "Good AI" tells the bosses to use super effective moves only, but the AI only sees 1 type if your pokemon is dual type AND the AI doesn't check if the move will does damage (If it has no super effective moves or multiple it will randomly choose between them). So in your scenario, the AI only saw that Beedrill is a bug type (Bug and Poison were super effective agaisnt eachother in Gen 1), and Koga's Muk knows 2 poison moves, Smog and Sludge. It picked randomly between those two so you got kinda lucky it used smog twice. If any of Ya'll wanna learn more about Gen 1 mechanics I'd recommend you binge Jrose11 and Scott's Thoughts' Gen 1 solo challenge videos. Now Jrose11 does Red and Blue challenges and Scott's Thoughts does Yellow version. Most of the janky stuff is the same, bit there are some differences so I say cgeck them both out
18:34 The "Not very effective" message is a text error. Grass attacks still do neutral damage to Gyarados, it just has a very high Special stat it does not take a lot from a weak attack like Vine Whip. Hope your recovery is swift and safe.
It's because the type effectiveness message only checks certain types. So if a Pokémon has two types, it will only display the message for one of them. But the damage is still calculated as it should be for effectiveness.
For Starmie I would argue that Tri-Attack would have been a more fitting replacement for Star Freeze. It has a chanche to paralyse (alongside burn and freeze, but who cares) and Star Freeze needs 2 colorless energy and all normal type pokemon are colorless, so It would fit better from that angle as well.
All hail the dark lord's fossil! Also I do like the idea of themed team runs. Doesn't even always have to be something as restrictive and hard as this one, but I do enjoy themed challenges.

About the vine whip not being very effective against Gyarados that is kinda wrong, in gen 1 when attacking a duel type pokemon the super effective text is bugged but the damage calculation is not so you did do neutral damage even though it said you didn't
Could drawing cards be translated to using Battle items like X-defend? Since you draw cards to gather useful resources and X-items are on that kind of premise.
It’s hard to remember if I picked the Overgrowth deck out of all of the options or it was the only one they had left. Either way, I also love that box art
I am playing around witih Gen 3 Romhacks but there are most likely someone around who could program a Red Version Rom Hack for lets say TCG rules and an Key-Item to "do nothing".
Can't wait for the Lore of the ParaVerse get so out of hand Game Theory has to do a video on it.
Haha I would be so honored
Matt was secretly MattPat ALL along!
There is no freeze in the card game, it's represented by paralysis which is why star freeze paralyzes to begin with, so I'd say ice beam makes sense.
This is true. If only there was a weaker Ice attack it could learn. 20 damage is pretty low. But Ice Beam ended up being kind of essential
Yep, that was my thinking, too

@@Paraspectre So it was technically correct, the best kind of correct.

"Freeze" doesn't exist in the TCG game. "Paralysis" is the closest thing.
This is true. Even more of a reason to go with Ice Beam
About the vine whip not being very effective against Gyarados that is kinda wrong, in gen 1 when attacking a duel type pokemon the super effective text is bugged but the damage calculation is not so you did do neutral damage even though it said you didn't
While this is true, Vine Whip really was not very effective
Really cool idea! I hope you do more episodes with the other theme decks
Awesome video keep up the great videos
Sorry to hear you got sick. Hope you'll be ok and get well soon. I look forward to your next challenge video
I’m so much better than I was a week ago, thank you
@@Paraspectre thats good to hear.
This was a fun idea for a video! I'll be excited if you do other crossover challenges in the future
I think I just may. Probably not on Red though.
Could drawing cards be translated to using Battle items like X-defend? Since you draw cards to gather useful resources and X-items are on that kind of premise.
Yeah this is a possibility. I probably wouldn’t have bothered anyway though
Ahahaha Dr Mathews is great
(Prefers damp places)
I went to a party the other night and a dude randomly brought his Gyarados out and I brought my Gyarados out and we also had a dragon rage off. Man
Sounds epic af
Good stuff dude. Definitely a unique challenge team idea.
Oh, and I forgot to say. That was a most excellent Fraiser ending tune parody. I come for the Pokémon content and stay for the 90s/early 00s content.
Glad that you did this man 👍. Hahaha Matthew strikes again. Man love that Overgrowth art.
Pretty sure you can use the pokeflute to waste a turn unless a pokemon is asleep
I dont remember it being mentioned, but Pink Floyd did a great job here ;)
I would’ve had to ask if you hadn’t said which fossil you picked
