NEVER do this with Raw Denim!

  • When it comes to raw denim there are a lot of differing opinions on how to treat your jeans. But there is one hard and fast rule that everyone seems to agree on. Do NOT put them in the tumble dryer. But then a lone voice left a comment on a video. “The first thing to do is wash and dry them in the dryer twice” Maybe this guy is right. So let’s go against all the denim lore and get our tumble dryer on.

    Levi’s 501’s are the “Chuck Taylors” of jeans. Not the best, not the most comfortable, but the most iconic of all jeans and the standard. It’s the perfect guinea-pig for these experiments.

    i had similar experience with Levi Made and Crafted raw unsanforized 511 jeans. Soaking and line drying did nothing. I bought size 33 because i wear same jeans in size 32. The dryer did the job, they shrunk 1 full size in waist and length shrunk from 34 inches to 32 inches. Some useful shrinkage in upper legs and seat of pants. I think dryer is your friend if the jeans are 1-2 inches too big. In terms of comfort and softness, no big change, just a bit better but no big deal. Overall, i will switch to the pre-shrunk denim now.

    When I first tried STFs I bought two pairs. The first I hot washed and hot dried before wearing and they fit fantastic afterwards. I tried the traditional hot soak and hang dry on the second pair and they were still so baggy I popped them into the washer on hot and dried them hot like the first ones. I didn't size up in the waist on either but I did go up one for the inseam with a 36.

      Growing up, we used to buy them big, and after washing, we always put them in the dryer. If you buy them big enough, and you're not interested in high contrast fades, I don't understand how you can ruin them.

    I put a pair of Nudie Gritty Jackson in the washer at 40 degrees and then tumble dryer due to a massive weightloss and they were like 90s skate-big on me so I thought "eh, fuck it. Lets do it". Before that I hadnt washed them but that made the fade pop and they shrank down to a nice fit again, but instead of two roll-cuffs I now do one roll-cuff. Oh, and the jacron-patch disintegrated, but I never liked it anyways. :) (sorry for the bad english, not my native tongue).

  • @ronnichols2624
    @ronnichols2624 Před rokem +1

    It is funny how people panic about possibly ruining jeans by machine washing and drying. They do fade differently. And the washing machine design can make a difference. Many people in the US have center agitator washing machines that strike the clothes to push them around the tub of soapy water. That can help soften the denim. And sometimes make some unusual fade spots (sometimes the denim gets twisted during agitatation). Tumble drying on low can minimize shrinking. Good to use the moisture sensor to prevent over drying if the dryer has that option. I washed my jeans for many years. As my mom did when I was a child. Because that is what everyone did.
    But much prefer wearing my raw unwashed sanforized jeans today. Or soaking my unsanforized jeans before wearing. I hate buying prewashed jeans. Always have. But somewhere in the 80s it became increasingly difficult to find any jeans that were not prewashed. It was great to me when raw denim took off mid 2000s and unwashed denim was more available to purchase. Along with all the amazing selvedge denims that started being woven. Unfortunately it probably made me more of a denim fanatic than before. 🙂

    I did a shrinking process on a pair if brand new 501s STF from 2013 a week ago. The way I did it was to soak them for 30 minutes in 3L of water with around 0.5L of white vinegar heated to 70 degrees Celsius. After that I rinsed them in the shower, I put them on and went out to dry them while wearing them.
    Once dried, I put them in the washing machine with soft soap and then into a light tumble dry cycle in the drier.
    Results were awesome, I bought them true to size at the waist and about three inches long in the length. The waist didn't shrink more than 1 cm, while the length shrunk by about 3", giving me a perfect fit.
    After the hot water soak and the initial shrink they had shrunk about three inches in the length, the drier took care of the final inch to get it perfect.
    Happy with how it turned out.

    I just got my second pair of selvedge denim jeans and the first pair was too big in the waist so everything else felt nice and loose and great but my second pair I got proper in the waist and the legs fit good and they're great length but I feel like I can hardly walk in them. If I try and spread my legs at all or take a long stride it's extremely restricting and I'm wondering if that ever goes away? At some point will I be able to walk and move the way I would if they were a stretch Jean or the way I can in my Levi 501s that are 99 cotton and 1% elastain

    I'm about to try this with a pair of momotaro 501s. The 32 size 701s were two inches too small for me so I returned them ($$ouch) for a pair of 33 size 201s which are two inches too large for me. Usually I fit a 32 (About 84cm waist) which matched the measurements at the store, so I don't know what's going on. What I do know is that I'm not paying $70 and waiting around for the delivery guy and paying duty a third time to return them again. I hope the legs twist like mad and they look really strange, the things only possible with unsanforized but dialled up to 11 due to being a horrible evil man who washes them wrong. Mahaha.
    update: It worked perfectly, they shrunk an inch or so. This was a hot one hour presoak in the tub followed by a hot/cold cycle in the washer followed by a hot tumble in the drier, repeatedly until no need to hang dry remained. I broke all the rules. The legs got more twisty. I love the look. In fact, I loved it so much I tossed it back in for a second run with two more pairs that had slightly loosened in the waist. Both fit perfectly without a belt again and have more leg twist. No colour fading, texture's fine, though obviously less crisp and I lost a bit of the hair on a nice fuzzy 22oz pair. I can see why people stress when the average pair is nearly $500. I'm a bit mad to risk $1200 and a year of wear like that, but I'm glad I did. We really do worry too much about it I think.
