@@daveb9920 What do you think of the previous album called Fleetwood Mac. I love Rumours, but think that Fleetwood Mac has more songs that could have been hits. And it shocks me to think that two totally different groups could get together for the first time and produce a gem as Fleetwood Mac. I would think it might take some time for each artist to understand the other. But not this time !

That sound at the end is actually Stevie Nicks...she wanted the sound of a cat/wolf screaming to end out the track. So yeah, that’s her.
I read somewhere or saw a documentary that is was Lindsey doing the howling. Either way, the song is fantastic.

redletter2008, nope. It’s Stevie. There were some dates on the Rumours tour when she replicates that sound live. There are recordings out there.
The Making of Rumours documentary shows the producer and Lindsay Buckingham recording Lindsay's voice and then twisting a knob and making it sound like that.
It’s clearly Lindsey howling. You can distinguish his voice toward the fade out.

They followed Rumours with Tusk--talk about experimental! It was weird in '79 and it's still weird today!

"Gold dust woman" partially references Stevie's drug habit at the time.

I saw both the 'Rumors' and "The Dance' tours. "I'm so afraid" was insanely good in both shows, live is where Lindsey can shine.

def one of the best albums ever. the lyrics here are so mystical and quintessential stevie nicks. it's almost like she goes into a trance at the end of it, and combined with the driving bass and pounding drums, you definitely can feel the '60s/'70s vibe. i was about to recommend the 1976 live 'rhiannon', but say you've already reacted to it. off to watch that one now! love your channel. such a great blend of music
This album is such a masterpiece, that if it were a piece of art, it would be hanging in the Louvre or MOMA.

I would love to see more reactions on Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles! Both bands inspired me to play guitar(finger picking). Their melodies, lyrics, riffs are absolutely amazing!
This song was her "baby"...they let her play it....there is a live version where she is allowed to sing it completely like she wanted to play it...incredible...and she does let it loose.
That is the one he should listen to. The one with Stevie in a mini skirt, so raw!
This truly is one of my favorite songs. If you're looking for something "different" and experimental, I recommend their 1979 title track "Tusk." I love it so much that I have the last line of the song "Real Savage Like" tattooed in bold letters on my forearm. You could listen to either the track from the album or the music vdeo.

It could be the best album of the seventies. Or second to best. For me it is this one or Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. I think this album is much more organic. Musically and lyrically. On top of that the emotion from their personal drama adds so much more.
Those sounds at the end are her voice.
This disc is one of my all time favorites.

🌹 Hi Derek. Thanks for another thoughtful review. Yes, cocaine was a big factor when they were making Rumours. One of her 1st lines is "take your silver spoon and dig your grave". I get your comments about the experimental aspect when you pointed it out. I always feel like the end sounds like a wolf howling.
Please check out the live version on the '76 Midnight Special of Rhiannon. Stevie and the whole band let lose. Sometimes live's aren't very good quality but this one is just great. Peace.

If you want to know all the minutiae including who did and said and I read a lot about Rumours from Ken Callait and Richard Dashut. You can read all about how each person contributed what to each song. In the Audible or Kindle of the book Making Rumours! An awesome book! The mystical quality of the song was imparted by Lindsey Buckingham who played the Do Bro. At the end when those wails start in they were not synthesized but came from Stevie. Ken turned off the lights and told her to let loose with those witchy howls in the back ground. Yep all Stevie and little synthesized and came out beautifully! 🙏 thanks

I am very fortunate I am such a well rounded expert type music guy. I am still young, but have immersed myself in classical music up to current times. Blows my mind how people don't even know about great songs or albums like this. Album of the Year Grammy winner. Stevie and her coke addiction. Brilliant song. Good job D.

They’re just as good or better live. I saw them at Nikon Theater in the summer @Jones Beach. Open stadium along the beaches of Long Island. OMG, AMAZING!
There really wouldn't be a punchy climax at the end, just escalating tension, with the drums sounding the beat...because that is what they are saying about the "gold dust woman." She's a force, almost, more than a person. And she's unchanging. "Rock on ancient queen," as they say. Even though the choruses are sung to her, almost as a sarcastic paean, you'll notice most of the emotion in the song is actually from a 3rd person perspective, "Did she make you break down," etc. But the "ancient queen" just keeps rolling on. No resolution.
You should do Stevie Nicks solo stuff....Edge of Seventeen...Battle of The Dragon...One More Big Time Rock n Roll Star....Stop Dragging my Heart Araound...Stand Back....We all Fall From Grace...etc...
After the 70's and to some extent the 80's the imo was over...don't know if it's a generational thing or not...probably...but I just can't wring the emotions of music anymore post this era...I did for a while but revisitation cures it all.....

The glass break actually happens where you paused it at around 6:45ish. It’s on the original but it was apparently removed or other instruments put to the forefront on more current edits.

The utter brilliance of this song is that you never really notice that none of the lyrics rhyme. Just a masterpiece in songwriting.
Courtney Love did a harder version of this for The Crow movie.

i love all of their songs...the live version has those heights that you think this one should have.The live version she really gets into it.You should really compare the two,the original version and the live version back to back,then you will see what 'i'm talking about.

Better react to the live version of this song on The Dance record. Personally I never dig into the studio version, it has not that tension, energy and rhythm section that all make the live one so outstanding. As well as with The Chain.
You mentioned you weren't quite sold on this song, but I'd bet that if you listened to Rumours from start to finish, you'll feel how well the song fits with all the others. Then you might have a better perspective on this track. 😁

Sir---------------this is a song about " cocaine use " ------------that is what / who, the " Gold Dust Woman " really is. The tragedy is that even as she wrote this, FM was getting deeper into using cocaine. Stevie was badly affected by her use by 1986.

Self autobiography song it is a metaphor for Cocaine Nick's had a very bad cocaine addiction she almost lost her nose from snorting so much

Love the mic and windscreen you use and you're very cute and personable.Anyway Back to this video, I'm a huge fan of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac. You're always making such great comments about her voice and performances. Well if you want to react to an awesome Stevie video. This is one her greatest live performances ever during Fleetwood Mac's career and really demonstrated her "mystique." Her energy and power on stage is at it's peak during this performance. Her voice and timber is strong and on point throughout this whole performance. It's also filled with many of her signature chiffon drenched twirls on stage.
