CIS: Understanding & Managing the Effects of Medical Trauma in Children and Adults with Spina Bifida

Individuals with Spina Bifida often describe experiencing symptoms of medical traumatic stress at some point across the lifespan. Traumatic stress and associated emotional reactions following a medical event can have effects that seriously impair an individual’s functioning and can impact how they manage their medical care moving forward.
In this session, the presenters described key concepts in medical traumatic stress and how it affects the day-to-day lives of children and adults with Spina Bifida. They also discussed how factors of diversity may influence the prevalence and severity of medical traumatic stress symptoms and offered practical resources for intervention and management.
