  • Here's part of my trip in Japan - Akihabara in particular. I read some Japan shopping guides (linked below), and visited some of the stores. Unfortunately as always, there wasn't enough footage to further show what these shops had - my apologies.
    Stores visited :
    Sofmap - Akihabara
    Tsukumo - Akihabara
    Yodobashi Camera - Akihabara
    BIC Camera - Yurokucho

    I can't believe they just openly put out so many keyboards on display yet none of them are missing any keys.
    If this was in our country, all the keycaps would have been stolen..

      haha. Reminds me of a Logitech board that was on display at a store near me, which had like half the caps missing.

      Here in Slovakia we don't even have "big" stores that sell mechanical KBs. Few local e-shops have few showrooms around the country but if you want to at least see a mechanical KB before you buy it your only chance is the capital city. And obviously even there you would only find "e-sport" brands.

      I dunno alot about mechanical pencils, but one day, scrolling, page after page, in an online store website I saw a mechanical pencil and it's an unbreakable lead, it said, I instantly bought it, it's kuru toga advanced and zebra Delguard and it's so awesome, it just made me want to see more advanced and more future mechanical pencil 😂

    • @ze_or
      @ze_or Před 4 lety +5

      Aaron Christian Thanks to replying to a 3 year old comment lol. I personally like the orenz series for unbreakable lead, eapecially orenz nero 0.3. The delguard works well for 0.5 but I don't write hard enough to break 0.5 anyway, and it's less effective for 0.3. I don't like kurutoga as much as the tip has a lot of wiggle room, and the lead turning doesn't matter as much when you get to 0.3 and 0.2 lead sizes.

      That's cool. Honestly, Japan isn't the best place for keyboards, but the shops certainly have all the big names. Archiss are doing well now too. At the last Tokyo meetup, there was a rep from Archiss and he was talking about them releasing the board you got, and he even brought one along to try out before it was released.

    I'm looking for my first mechanical keyboard at the moment and it's a bit overwhelming. I plan to be visiting Japan in a couple of months, so I think I will try and look at a bunch of them in-store as you did. I lived in Japan for a number of years and used to haunt electronic stores, but I never paid much attention to the keyboard sections, partially because I hate the Japanese key layout. Would you say that the English layout was available for many/most of the keyboards?

      Typically for typing in Japanese, an IME is used. This is far easier in many cases than using straight kana input, mainly because there are roughly half the number of characters in the Latin alphabet as there are in hiragana, plus numbers and punctuation which are often used in Japanese anyway.
      With an IME, instead of typing さ, you would type "sa" then confirm. When typing kanji, you would type the reading, such as "chichi", then select the appropriate kanji "父" with the spacebar, then confirm. You can even autofill entire phrases for common ones. Like how typing thank on a smartphone keyboard almost always allows you to autocomplete in you. For a language with multiple character sets like Japanese, this is pretty much ideal. However, if you need to spam ああああああああ or write poetry or something, kana input is pretty great.
      Hope that answers your question about a year late!

      @knowgnod Před 7 lety +1

      surprisingly, not a lot of electronics stores carry mech keyboards, and if they do they're usually razer, zenics, and various gaming companies (almost always with only blue switches)
      there are seperate stores that only sell i/o gear, and usually there you can test out a little wider variety of keyboards there, including leopolds.
      what Korea's really the home for is, as you could probably tell, custom keyboards. the groupbought / personally designed keyboard housings, pcbs, and various keyswitch mods and knowledgebase here is absolutely MFing phenomenal. especially the OTD 356 mini boards are legends. check em out. also come visit kbdlab.co.kr which is the community I belong to. you can see some amazing galleries of custom boards if you use google translate properly. check out otd.kr also :)
