I was the Key Grip on this picture. Mentioned was the creative contribution by the outstanding cinematographer, Peter Deming, who worked next to me to create the lighting, The old airplane used was an old WW2 vintage C-46 Commando, shot on the outskirts of Ft. Lauderdale airport. The farm was an actual old one in Davie, west of Ft. Lauderdale. It was hellish shooting there, in summer, coupled with some internal money problems with terrible catering. I had looked for this for about three or four years when I found a vhs copy in a used book store that had a large used vhs section in 1999 or 2000. I was immediately smitten and super creeped out. Everything I’d read was true: it really was creepy and effective and, honestly, I figured it to be one of those ‘movie miracles’ long before I learned of its storied past. Shows like The (New) Outer Limits, Tales from the Darkside, and of course the first few seasons of X-Files. There's just something about that style of show, how you can tell it was made pretty quick, and of course the SFX. Those shows are my guilty pleasures and you will get my rose colored glasses when you pry them from my cold (un)dead hands! ;)

The way you are almost never sure, as a viewer, if you are hearing people simply talking normally out loud, or the scarecrows speaking telepathically to the soldiers, or the soldiers talking to each other over their headsets... I always thought that was a really cool touch. But, it sounds like they just had a lot of footage of the soldiers wandering through the fields with no dialog, and just dubbed in some talking just to fill it out. It works really well, I think.

Michael David Simms (Currie) ended up several years later on a few episodes of the X-Files. I was watching that series again recently and recognized him, and immediately thought about how underrated "Scarecrows" is. It's almost so underrated that it's overrated at this point. A lot of cult horror fans adore this movie, including myself.

I like the new intro, but I am even more happier that you finally got around to this flick. Saw this flick on one of the Encore channels years and years ago. It is probably my favorite killer scarecrow flick to be honest. Then again...that isn't saying much. You got the Dark Harvest series, Night of the Scarecow...3 super low budget straight to dvd scarecrow flicks, and a SYFY original. So...it's not like it has a lot of competition lol! :P

I love scarecrow films! They always have to set up both the reason for it's existence and rules since, unlike other more popular monsters, there are no real common understanding for them. My favorite is 'Husk' (2011).

Another great episode, Cecil. When it comes to taking a "deep dive" into the story behind some of the little known horror films, you're one of the best at it. For some reason, "Scarecrows" was one film I couldn't find for rental until 2001 and that was at a local store that bought up a lot of VHS tapes because Blockbuster & Hollywood Video was fast switching to DVD. I remember it did look low budget, but it had some creepy scares in it. I think if I had seen it earlier when it was released, I think I would have liked it more. "Dark Night Of The Scarecrow" was always THE scarecrow film when I was growing up.

I watched this movie after watching your review. It's a fun goofy 80s horror flick that has some good themes going on that would be amazing in a remake.
I like the idea of this random backwoods farmland being some kind of purgatory or hell where the robbers are left to suffer at the hand of some demonic force. Listen, it's really low budget and not even close to being well executed, but the idea is solid and the effects are kickass. I think it has the building blocks to be remade with some more polish.
I think my favorite effect is the night vision zombie/scarecrow at the end that attacks the guy in the house. The exposed mutilated mouth with the goggles on remind of Vic Rattlehead from Megadeth.
