The first awful impression of the house was the dark chocolate brown gloomy exterior . That was truly a turn-off . As for the inside the owner was immaculate how she kept it even if it was outdated. If she would have taken out her furniture placed it in storage , shown it bare and lowered the price it would have sold as is and not have had to spent $5000,00 on remodeling. Let the new owners visually have given it their own style to it.

Paint it a lighter, brighter color outdoors (Even if it was just trimmed out nicely) and perhaps plant a few eye-catching plants out there if the weather allows. If it still doesn't sell, then I would do a little painting inside. If the furniture is dated....move it out. I swear I would not totally refurbish my house, etc. in order to sell it. It's not cluttered, people can see it's "bones" which is what they need to see. My sister spent $30,000 on updating her home and sold it for $15,000 more than a previous offer. That makes no sense. Realtors love for you to spend all that money so that it sells for more, they get a bigger payday too without spending a dime. My house wasn't outdated, but I moved most of my stuff out so that there would be no problem with different "tastes".

That carpet would be filthy in no time, the awful brown artwork (which seems to be repeated in every makeover for some bizarre reason) is deadening and the bedding was back to dated. The wall unit and paint colors were absolutely transformative, but the stairs and railing color stood out like a sore thumb. In my opinion, selling YOUR property to marry someone is just such a bad move, and I see so many women doing this. You lose all your equity. They should have used this as a rental, and then if things didn't work out, she'd still have a place to live. I bet they used the money to pay off his house, that's what has happened with all my friends, even though their name isn't on the title. Bad move. RE the interior- a few pillows and flowers was all it needed, get rid of sad decor, but nothing else needed anything. They needed to paint the exterior to match the colors of the neighborhood (I see a lot of grey and whilte) and then add some things like a nice bench and some exterior flowers to make this less stark and more family oriented. Paint the house white and grey or some such, add shutters to the windows, and some trim to the upper edge of the house. I think that *under* this modern exterior is probably a really great brick house, just my guess, if you pulled off the siding, I bet that's what you'd find. If they pulled the property records they could have gotten a better idea.

I feel the majority of people are like this, unfortunately, but buying a house is the largest investment we can make. I'm guessing it's too daunting to think about fixing things on top of the amount of money one is spending to purchase a place. People just want to see something that is move-in ready, and not have to think about what needs to be done once one moves in.
Have to say I'm (pleasantly) surprised they're using colour on the walls. I've always been told the only way a place will sell is if you use white or off-white on the walls (because of the lack of imagination and people's seeming absolute terror of colour on the walls). I know when I sell the place I'm in now, I will have to repaint pretty much the entire place.

Loki Cooper interesting points Loki. It did seam a departure from all previous selling advice to go neutral. The house I am in took nine months to renovate and it has been an evolving project ever since. But we bought it for a song, it had been on the market for two years. But it had great bones. It is a large mid Victorian house in its own grounds and is worth a lot of money now. But I admit it was a daunting prospect. We stopped showing it to people after a while as they just thought we were nuts. Some people truly cannot imagine beyond what is in front of them. It is lucky if you can because you can have an amazing home for a lot less than a perfect one. But it will be perfect for you when you’ve finished it!

So, the young professionals the realtors imagined would be interested in this lovely property are incapable of seeing beyond the vertical blinds and 'dated' furniture! WOW, poor wee snowflakes, lol. It was spotlessly clean, no major errors in decor and no clutter. What else do people need?! I could have cheerfully moved in as it looked originally then altered things to my requirements over a short period of time. Look how easy it was to remove the blinds and hang curtains! Even the carpet appeared clean and well cared for. Seems some folk have no clue about how lucky they'd be to have a property which was certainly live-able even before addressing the (trivial) decor issues!
