  • The Semantron of the Monastery of St. John on Patmos is rung only on special days. This recording was made on September 25, 2011, on the eve of the Feast of the Dormition and Assumption of St. John the Evangelist right before the panegyric Vespers of the Feast.

      The church in the west sadly separated from these great eastern churches. Protestants (as I used to be) don't know about them because they are just seen to be catholic and so are not worth looking into. Once you see that it is the Orthodox church which has not changed, this truly changes everything.

      To announce that a service is about to take place usually. I wouldn't call it a ritual any more than ringing bells is a ritual.
