  • Welcome to episode #34 of our Franchise Mode series with the Vancouver Canucks on NHL 24! Coming off of our winningest season in franchise history, we enter the playoffs looking to win back-to-back Cups for the first time. Could it be a Swede victory? Leave a comment with any and all of your suggestions and I'll do my best to incorporate them into the next episode! :)
    Canucks Google Sheet: docs.google.co...
    The Vancouver Canucks are a franchise that have been through decades of misfortune, mismanagement, and, really, just pure disappointment. With nothing to show but three Stanley Cup Final losses in their 50+ years in the NHL, the Canucks are on the brink of returning to an all-time low as they have only made the postseason twice in the last decade, have one of the shallowest prospect pools in the league, and are easily in one of the worst salary cap situations. With no where else to turn, Canucks ownership has made a call to GM Data and his team of Assistant GMs to do the impossible: fix the unfixable team.

    For contracts, sign Dobson for 1, 2, or 3 seasons after the draft. Sign Muller right now to a $825K X 2 contract. I think you can let the other NHL expiring contracts go. Hanifin was the worst-performing defenseman on the team, and could regess heavily even more due to age. Sign your expiring unsigned prospects. For trades, I think you should trade Hronek. He dropped to 82 overall and top 6 potential, is not worth his price tag, and the open roster spot can help younger defensemen grow. Also, trade Bouillon, Goldmann, and maybe even Tippett, as Tippett was the oldest, most expensive, worst-perfroming member of the 2nd line, and has a few years left. Also, it would give an opportunity for either Montoya or Tyupkin (preferably Tyupkin, as he has more upside due to age) to get 2nd line ice time and more growth. It would also give someone like Sydor or possibly even Domingues 3rd line ice time to facilitate their growth as well. As for the AHL goalies, wait until the start of the season to trade one of them, and even then, don't trade one of them unless you get an enticing offer.
    For the draft, with your first round pick, draft Langdon. With your 2nd round pick, draft Forbes. With your 3rd round pick, trade up to pick 80 to draft Backman. With your first 4th round pick, draft Henriksen. Trade up to 105 using your 5th round pick and trade piece(s) mentioned above to draft Hoggan. With your second 4th round pick, draft Springis (maybe trade up a spot or two using a random AHL guy or a player's UFA rights just to secure him). With your 6th round pick, draft Pittis. With your 7th round pick, draft Sadikov (McGrattan is 20).
    I think the lines could look like this next season:
    1st F: Lundqvist-Markström-Lekkerimäki
    2nd F: Räty-Pettersson-Tippett (Montoya or Tyupkin if Tippett traded)
    3rd F: Montoya-Rasmussen-Tyupkin (Sydor or Domingues if Tippett traded)
    4th F: Sydor-Domingues-Podkolzin (Free Agent if Tippett traded)
    Depth F: Free Agent
    1st D: Hughes-Dobson
    2nd D: Quint or Free Agent or Trade Acquisition-Wallace
    3rd D: Arvidsson-Quint (Free Agent or Kravchenko if Quint 2nd pair)
    Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that Wallace and Arvidsson are both OFDs, which means they can't play together. If this true, Wallace should play 2nd pair over Arvidsson, as he actually has the chance to reach his potential, unlike Arvidsson. If they do actually have different player types, then you can probably play them together on the 2nd pair, and then a younger free agent or Kravchenko can pair with Quint on the 3rd pair. I think that Dobson and Hughes will play well together because Hughes is an OFD and Dobson is a TWD. Hughes and Hronek (a TWD) have performed well together in the past, and Dobson and Arvidsson (an OFD) have also performed well together.
    Depth D: Lebedev
    G: Jones-Muller
    Depth G: Free Agent
    Side Notes: maybe putting AHL-ready CHL prospects in the AHL during the season as soon as they turn 20 could facilitate their growth, as they play aginst higher levels of competition? I have not played the game, so I don't know if that actually works, but I think it's worth a try. If that does work, we should also do the same with AHL-ready American prospects aged 17-20. Also, what is Quint's player type?

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Hey Gen Z thanks for all of this! :)
      Agreed on the re-signings! The trades are what become difficult.. If possible, I'd prefer to let Hronek's contract run out (and possibly re-sign him for cheaper if it works out). He's been so good and I think, especially with his price tag, we value him more than any other team would. It'll come down to if we can afford hanging onto him for the last year of this contract. For Tippett, I'm wary to move him and the 60+ points he's usually good for in exchange for a sophomore player joining the top 6. I see the potential for success and understand the reason behind even considering a Tippett trade, but I'd have to think he gets the first half of this next season to redeem himself with the track record that he's shown. ALL OF THAT BEING SAID, I don't disagree with your thinking - just possibly the timing. Tyupkin, Sydor, etc. may just never grow no matter what but Montoya is someone who may push Tippett out in the near future.
      Noted on the draft plan! Very nice. The forward lines also look good to me but I think Rasmussen is a tempting trade piece if we need to add value to a potential move. For defense, I don't think a rookie 78-79 OVR Quint can play 2nd pair over an 83 Arvidsson who ate big minutes last season but I see where you're going with not wanting to have two OFD together since Wallace is in the mix. That's why I might be tempted to keep Arvidsson/Dobson on the 2nd pair and maybe Hughes plays with Wallace..? Just thinking out loud, pre-season will help to answer questions like those. Ah, just saw the next part of your comment that mentioned the player types. Maybe Hughes/Wallace (X-Factors cancel out player types), Arvidsson/Dobson, Quint/Hronek? Growth from Alexandrov and/or Kravchenko will also play a factor. I also can't exactly recall Quint's player type but I think he's a TWD.
      Whew! Thanks again Gen Z, I appreciate all of your thoughts and look forward to incorporating them into the offseason plan! :) See you at the draft!

    EA A.I. at its best 😂
    I've said it before, I'll say it again... this game is broken and has been for quite some time.
    Goaltending wasn't the issue this time as both had good numbers. I'd extend Mueller right away in case his demands goes up after the draft.
    We probably need some kind of retool on defense. I'm ready to pull the plug on the Bouillon experiment. We should either trade him for a younger prospect or for a top draft pick. We can move on from Hanifin and either replace him via trade/ufa or give his spot to Lebedev or Quint if we think he could grow, otherwise he can also get traded as there's 2 other youngsters pushing for spots. We might also look at moving Hronek as he's not getting younger and I don't see us extending him next year as a 82ovr or less being 35yo. Shame that there isn't a good RD as potential ufa (Gulyayev is probably the better option which isn't super appealing... maybe Spence on a 3 or 4 year contract?). We might want to explore the trade blocks. Maybe this is where we use a Bouillon or Quint as tradebaits to replace Hronek and we trade Hronek for whatever.
    Upfront, should we trade Tyupkin if he's not showing growth? The NHL ready late 1st round never amount to anything when we draft them. I'd let Forsberg walk and maybe we look at upgrading on Tippett after his lackluster season? I think our first 5 forwards are locks but getting a solid 6th could boost our chances. If he drops to ufa, I might look to do a 1 year big $ offer to MacKinnon and trade Tippett so we wouldn't be tied long term for the upcoming extentions we'll have to give. Other options could be Yurov, Perfetti or Svensson depending on their asking price and how they sim.
    It's been another solid season but we unfortunately can't win them all. At least, we still have a very solid and young-ish core so our window is still opened for years to come. Couple of upgrades here and there + getting a bit younger and we're back on top.
    Go 'Nucks!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Nothing even has to be said for that atrocity at this point 😭😭🤦‍♂️
      Copy that on Muller. We'll figure out the goalie situation come September. I agree on defense but it'd be hard to now let Hronek's contract expire after all that he's done with us in our series. I would think 5/6 on defense would be Hughes, Dobson, Hronek, Arvidsson, and Wallace, with the 6th spot perhaps going to a guy like Quint or one of our other growing players who could make a case for themselves in September just like how Arvidsson did this past season. No matter what direction we go in, I'm not sure if we actually bring IN anyone new for the blueline at this time as we're already likely letting go of Hanifin and Bouillon.
      For the forwards, Tyupkin is a tough one.. We basically have no hope that he'll grow but does that mean he can't be a valuable player like Goldmann? Or do we have to keep asset management in mind and trade him anyways since his value is higher than his ceiling? Regardless, the bottom 6 is still unsolidified and even the 6th forward of our top 6 is a question mark. I don't want to move Tippett just yet, but his leash has gotten shorter and we'd need a Forsberg-type player who gives L3 scoring and can be trusted on L2 if needed. FA options will definitely make us think.
      Couldn't agree more that the window is still very much open! Let's make those upgrades and run it back. Thanks for everything and see you at the draft! :)

    @rameses4245 Před 3 měsíci +1

    So Noah Hanafin pulls one of the worst defensive efforts I've seen and has the audacity to ask for 5+ mil? Send this man to the shadow realm! I agree that some lineup changes will have to wait until we see the growth from some young players, but we also have to think about Owen Tippett and Filip Forsberg. How much does Forsberg regress in the off-season and are we keeping him? Does Tippett stay another year here or do we package him with some extra draft picks for a roster player? I think it would have to be someone capable of playing on the second line with the bottom 6 looking to be a bit of a jam next season. We have some questions here but I think this team still has what it takes to be a dynasty, go Nucks!

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Haha great point!! We love Hanifin but I don't think the money situation or organizational situation allows for us to keep him for that price any longer.
      Tippett and Forsberg are both tough calls. As much as we loved having Forsberg, he'll likely continue to regress and the bottom 6 continues to be full of question marks with stagnated growth. For Tippett, we'd want him to stay RW2 and get back to 60+ points, but it was a big down year for him. I think we keep him for now, but his leash got shorter. That being said, we'll see what options come our way in the offseason! Like you said, there are some question marks but I believe in this core. Thanks for your thoughts and see you at the draft! :)

    1:04:20- I have to disagree with you here. It is 100% because of Elite vs. Top 4. Top6/Top4 just don 't grow, especially when they're "NHL Ready" out of the draft. You might as well mentally downgrade their potential to Top 9/Top6 because that's just what they are. VERY rarely do my Top6/Top4 prospects grow past 78-80 overall, regardless of draft day ETA or draft position (unless they're High Top6/Top4). Meanwhile even my low Elite prospects consistently reach 80-82, at minimum.
    As I said back on Episode 27 when we drafted Sydor and Tyupkin, "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Yeah I'm with you, I think I was just saying it in a way that didn't fully encapsulate my thoughts. I've had a fair number of MED Top 6/Top 4 players become decent in the sense of 82 OVR+, but I'm saying that the NHL ETA being "NHL Ready" for a player of that potential is what kills their growth even more. I'd rather take a 65 MED Top 6 who can grow to 82-83 than a 79 MED Top 6 who will cap at 80. And you're right, NOW I've learned my lesson at least for NHL 24 😂

    Spoilers
    Alright I need to see a complication of data moments now - ea is back at it again! Pulling off their best 2024 irl Canucks impression - a pathetic effort in game 7. Sigh.
    Despite Hughes’ empty net blunder I’m proud of him for the norris and you have to imagine jones was a close second for the vezina.
    Love to see our prospect pool filling up again, voynov, arcobello, kravchenko, etc. are exciting prospects, you never know when you’ve found the next jayce wakabayashi! Definitely some players pushing for spots next season…
    For the draft, please stay away from dowd, we know how those 70-ish overall defenseman develop. Quint, boullion, etc. just not worth it. Instead I think we should take bpa and move down, definitely targeting springis the gem, him being 17 years old is intriguing.
    We have a logjam at goaltending - trading bykov or esche is obvious, maybe wait until the preseason to see who had the better summer. Also I know his penalties are bad but I would love to see bealieu on the forth line for the rest of the franchise mode. I can just sense a clutch playoff goal sometime in the future for him - a real glue guy. He’s earned a spot.
    I think our top 6 should stay the same, one bad year does not define tippett just yet. The defence is very difficult, Dobson is a must but with hanifin’s contract we may be forced to keep boullion…hopefully not, because hanifin is a good veteran presence and his retirement will line up perfectly with the ascension of alexandrov and kravchenko into full-time roles. Overall I think we should still just bank on growth and make changes as nessecary. Sorry for the super scattered thoughts today - have a great day and see you at the draft. Go nucks

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Haha I look forward to the day that we get that compilation! I'm sure the majority of moments would be EA-induced 😭 That being said, yes, much to be proud of in general for both Hughes and Jones. And you read my mind on those prospects! One or two of them may just surprise us 👀
      Noted for the draft! And makes sense on the goalies, we'll see who has the better summer. For Beaulieu, I couldn't agree more! I'm fairly confident he'll find his way back into the LW4 role or 13th forward at the very least. No more AHL time. For the top 6, I agree that Tippett shouldn't be defined by this season but his leash has gotten shorter. For defense, Dobson is a must yes but that'd leave just one spot on the blueline for either Bouillon, Quint, another prospect, or a new player if Hanifin leaves. And with his age and contract demand, as much as we love him, I don't know if I can see him staying at this point. The good news is that we have some options in the system - we'll just have to see if they can step up to the plate! No apology needed for any scattered-ness, I appreciate your honest thoughts! ;) Enjoy the end of the weekend and we'll see you at the draft!

    Wow! Unbelievable bad voodoo.
    With re-arranging the team, I would perhaps consider Necas, in terms of the dollars and years for his contract, and of course overall. If all fits, perhaps you could package Rasmussen and a couple late picks for Necas as third line centre. I know his issue comes down to the stupidity of EA, but there are only two potential scapegoats, and nobody is going to show Hughes the door.
    Equally, with the defence, I would shake it up a little. If Wallace is ready to join Hanifin on the third pair, then great. However, I would wait and see how the off season growth impacts them first.
    Might be a quiet free agency this year, but that can only be a good thing…

    • @Data782
      @Data782  Před 3 měsíci

      Tell me about it!! Necas is a very interesting option, especially with the real world rumours surrounding him.. We'll take a closer look!
      Defense is a more difficult one with growth questions but I'd think that Hughes, Dobson, Hronek, Arvidsson, and Wallace take up 5/6 spots in whatever permutation. As much as we love Hanifin, that 6th spot would probably be Bouillon or someone new - either in our system or in a short-term FA signing. I could see Quint getting his chance, maybe with Hronek on the 3rd pair in a reduced role as he gets older? At the same time, it'd be hard to separate that Hughes/Hronek powerhouse. More to think on! Thanks for all of your thoughts and we'll see you at the draft :)
