For one glorious summer, an experimental, sci-fi band rocked Disneyland's space stage. With a bass-playing Wookie and an acrobatic frog, the band's existence is nearly unbelievable, and the story behind its creation is just as incredible. This is Defunctland's first feature film, Live From the Space Stage: A HALYX Story. Please enjoy.

I broke down in tears when I heard my auntie's voice (Lora Mumford) I haven't heard her voice in 10 years since she passed away. She is the reason for my passion for music.
Her voice reminds me of Ann Wilson of Heart.
Now you have her on CZcams and so many fans!!
Are you the niece with the jacket? Can we see a pic of the jacket?
@@MovieVigilante She reminds me of Lora Mumford.... She was awesome.
Sorry for your loss... I was in the eighth grade when I first heard her sing. It was a amazing band... I wished I had a tape of their songs or record but some great things are just made to be remembered..
"I mean, c'mon, who doesn't want to watch a 7-foot Wookie play the bass" that's it, that's the whole documentary
Rule #2 Your bass player is a useless Wookie.
I read this right as she said it in the video.
That was weird. lol
I was a boy then, and I was from there , it's only an accident that I wasn't at Disneyland on a day when this happened. This documentary makes me emotional! This was true and serious Art . for commercial purpose or otherwise.
The young fans making up lore for the keyboard player was amazingly wholesome.
Seriously, I'm so obsessed that they did this
@@alexaburks that was the kind of stuff we did as kids. I remember coming up with so many random fake facts about Pokemon in the playground and everyone agreeing with these headcanons (as they'd be called today) and coming up with their own
It's the one part that without fail always makes me cry any time I rewatch this
There's an alternate universe where Halyx was a huge megahit and spawned an entire genre of sci-fi-alien-rock
🥺🥺🥺
Hey how can we get to this dimension?
GWAR and TWRP are 57 parallel universes ahead of that
I would like to go there.
sci-fi-alien-rock isn't a genre it's a gimmick. Cool band tho
Disney didn't allow male guests with long hair to enter the park but they'd have a band sing a song called Jail Bait. God, the '80s were a wild time!
and... THEY COULDN'T DANCE!! I would have been rockin out with the band, screw that.

@@Yo_DynamoJoe Probably a lot of them. He didn't seem like a buzzkill to me, he just seemed chilled out, and a little sad when talking about his awesome band that fell apart before they really got started. You thought rock musicians are supposed to be peppy?
@@Yo_DynamoJoe I didn't think he was that bad. Just like everyone else, he seemed happy that the doc was being mad.
It's not often a band is too successful for its own good. They fell apart because they were too talented to just be the novelty act Disney wanted them to be, and that's a tragedy.
Was thinking that as well. Production was too expensive, they want to pay a lead and move on.
45:46 I love how they were like "we were not expecting the wookiee to have sex apeal" and it's like... this was a decade before Beauty and the Beast came out, so they wouldn't _know,_ but escentially that's just _Beast with a Bass Guitar._ Of COURSE girls would love it.
I know right?? I got to that part of the video and just thought, "wow....I wonder how many girls had their first furry awakening because of this band?" Who wouldn't love a giant, sick ass bass playing wookie?
Oh man seeing all the ah... fanart of Glam Rock Freddy and seeing the Halyx wookie I'm like, okay furry love has been around.... much longer than I thought it had lol.
The original Furry?
Alrighty, looks like I'm adding "attend every Halyx performance during that one 80's summer" to my time travel bucket list.
Don't build a two seated, lets make a time traveling train!
OMG Me too ! where can I hear the songs? are there recordings?
@Safwaan How Lovely to be too young to remember.
What if... the future you has already finished the time train and have already taken all of your CZcams friends back in time for the concerts.
Thats why no one remembers the show. Because all the attendees were from the future. And the future is us. Whoa.

This is probably the first crowdfunded documentary I’ve seen that was actually released
This is my third:
First was Death of Superman Lives
Second was In Search of Darkness
It’s all a great watch
Derek Night I liked death of superman lives. I didn’t know it was crowdfunded I just assumed showtime paid the guy to make it.
Maniac536 oh no. I remember the crowdfunding for Death of Supes lives. We all thought it was crazy that he’d get to interact with the likes of Tim Burton and Kevin Smith AND that they’d uncover almost long lost footage to see stuff we’d only hear whispers and rumors of.

Mine was Natsuki: the movie
I'm so bummed that no one liked the name though. Halyx is a kickass name. And I'm so bummed I never got to experience them. They would have been exactly my jam. Lora was INCREDIBLE. What an actual goddess. I bet it was life-changing for so many girls in the audience to see a woman front a cool galactic rock band.
Halyx-tosis
Honestly tho? SUCH a sick name. Whoever said they didn’t like Halyx has no imagination. It just has that right taste in the mouth.
@@jack-a-lopium THERE . . . that's a name for a modern Thrash band with late 80's roots! 😅
“Moht Rillem: Beethoven from Space”
I can’t express how epic that name is. I love that they had a really dedicated fanbase. They deserved it!
The hand gesture the fans made up was really touching. And the headbanging in the seats!
There's something about musicians and stage performers that knowingly perform for children/young adults that always make me happy.
Like maybe they're going through the motions in a hot wookie suit, but they also must know that they're inspiring as well as entertaining. It must have been rewarding to think back on, as they got older, and watched kids in their own lives grow up.
"They go 'we're gonna kick you out' and it's like 'No, no, I'm playing Space Mountain. Shut up'"

So true at Disneyland during that era. Any male guest with long hair was looked on as a subversive, and even if they didnt have a plainclothes security host shadowing them, they would at the least be scrutinized by most security guards they passed during their visit.

This is the case of a band that is legitimately before its time. Today, they'd 100% be signed to someone like Napalm Records. You got bands like Alestorm, Sabaton, Gloryhammer, Powerwolf, and that's just from them. The age of niche, themed bands is well and truly upon us, and these guys were doing it before it was possible to be successful. They'd 100% be successful today.
it's a different world today. Today they would simply pump out videos on CZcams and have a world wide following. You almost don't need record companies anymore if you are good enough.
If Nekrogoblikon and GWAR can exist, Halyx should too, damnit.
I think that TWRP are the clearest inheritors of this style of pure fun, Sci fi costumed rock band. They're really excellent.
@@kagitsune I was just thinking that TWRP must have been influenced by Halyx!
Oh absolutely. They're kind of like the Mechanisms, who also all have characters and do show in costumes. Indie or as a Disney venture, the in-universe Halyx members would all have their own names and backstories
The fun thing to see from this is how teenagers and fans have always been teenagers and fans, which I know is a basic statement but it really made me giddy to see it documented here. The Die Hards in the front row of every show, dancing to support the band even though the venue didn't allow it. How it was the fans who made the merchandise and gave them as gifts (and I can only imagine that was more difficult to do in the 80's.) The fans coming up with lore and backstories for the band mates, how the lead guitarist of course was a heartthrob but you still had people go crazy over the big burly dude in a fur suit. These sweet, simple, human moments that connect us through the decades
I love that, even back then, you inevitably had the fans who were hot for the furry monster. XD
"i'm playing space mountain, shut up"

"And the sign said long haired freaky people need not apply"

The fact that the only piece of the band left is one that Laura decided to keep and pass on is SO heartbreaking. This was an amazing documentary, thank you.

It feels appropriate that the last vestige is lora’s jacket. I hope it stays with their family forever.
It wish we could go see them live. it is utterly brilliant.
I wish even more Lora could see how many people love their music and everything they did.

The fact that the only part of the ensemble left is Laura's jacket is so heartwarming and saddening all at once

It’s great the jacket exists...it seems iconic...and it is!
I agree. It's such a bittersweet keepsake. It's such an iconic and definitive icon of Halyx. Yet at the same time, its existence represents Lora's inability to move on; she held on to that jacket because she never let go of the dream of Halyx coming back.
When the text said "Except one...", I knew what it would be and was wrecked.
Omg I didn’t expect to physically cry when I saw the jacket, I was a wreck.

I'm not gonna lie, when the Wookie bassist put his bass on the ground and starts mashing it with his paws, I had my mind blown. 😂 How could you not be into that show as a spectator?
I thoroughly believe in my heart that Halyx could've succeeded and made it big. The talent was there, the passion and creativity was wild, and it had clearly created a dedicated fanbase (that persisted to this day) and the fact that new fans are coming after just discovering the CONCEPT proves that there was a winning formula.
I think Halyx didn't grow because not enough marketing was put into it. Most record labels REFUSED to believe it, Disney barely brought any attention to it and wanted it gone once the summer was over because it didnt fit thier branding. This band didn't fail because of the concept, it's people or even because of bad luck. It only failed because wasn't given the support it needed to grow
Honestly, they have Star Wars land now, they could make this into a fully licensed Star Wars hair metal band and even use it to expand the lore of Star Wars, there’s already two fan bases to pull from, it would draw on the nostalgia train that’s still in full swing, there’s so much talent out there, if they wanted to bank on this, they absolutely could and it would likely succeed.
Shout out to the original fangirl/boys who made their own fandom merch....these are the original deviant art/etsy creators.
We love you all and honor you.
Disney you gotta treat your talent better...first Annette, then Lora and after the MMC kids of the 90's. Stop treating your talent like disposable trash.

@@htmlnkp I also think it's kind of beautiful in a way too. like. it's a family heirloom now, a flash of lightening in the shape of a red leather jacket. like a singer of Lora's quality working a regular non-singing job. something about the magical and the mundane colliding in weird ways
@@kaelynkelly-colon7170 Happens more than you think. Very tragic and a waste of talent not exposed to the world where it belongs. Just imagine if resources were more accessible to unsung talent. Strangely we're at a point in human history where it's leaps and bounds more accessible than ever yet, most stuff sucks. The true unsung talents are where accessible is inaccessible nor green lit and organized.
@@coreym162 The problem is that everyone has a voice and the best voices aren't always the loudest in terms of eyes on the internet
Aw man, this got a lot sadder than i expected from a documentary about an alien band at Disneyland...
Hey There Boys is phenomenal. If this was released today, it would do so well around indie circles :(
awe, this is so sad. I think, what hurts me the most, is that they didn’t realize it was over until it was too late. imagine how memorable their last show would have been if they had known it was to actually be their last show.
Why did the Beethoven from Space bumper stickers make me so emotional
I got a guess. maybe it's because the young fans who made them, made the band more than the gimmick it was set up to be, suddenly you have these ecstatic fans at every show giving the hardworking band energy and reason to interact with the audience as much as possible, adding to the fantasy of the space-band with hand signs and homemade merch.
I guess it's all just very wholesome. I imagine the keyboard player being handed those bumper stickers thinking 'the company who hired us won't even make merch, but these kids like our show so much they made their own!' just shows what a great connection the band must have had with their fans.
The absence of Laura throughout the video didn't make the foregone conclusion any less sad :(
I momentarily hesitated, but you had me with "...and then I had to climb the rope and play tambourine in space." Just plain excellent work. HALYX ROCKS!
She held that note from 51:54 - 52:11
Holy Shit. What a VOICE.
why am i crying about this band that existed decades before i was born 😭
I was alive back then and didn't even knew about this band and I am all bummed out too.
When are you going to stop making the rest of CZcams look bad, Kevin?
Top notch quality on display. Really blown away.
But then if this is the quality content that we watch instead of stuff like the paul Brothers then we can possibly make them have to actually try to be creative
Watching that percussionist running around while playing different instruments feels like slipknot before slipknot
As a bassist, having a "sure why not" attitude helps with a lot of things
This is a perfect example of excellent long-form content that simply would never get made without youtube as a platform. The ability of niche content to find its audience here is incredible.
And to think that youtube is actively trying to fuck over content like this.
@@Synergy7Studios its because youtube prefers mediocrity to an extent
youtube has *nothing* to do with this documentary. youtube would sooner actively prevent a creative endeavor like this from happening if it suited them.
@@mothratheresa8582 youtube prefers corporate advertiser money... hence the mediocrity.
Yes... let’s thank CZcams for defunctland’s hard work...
Never heard about Halyx before this documentary but that shot of Lora's vest moved me to tears somehow?
Me too--wept over that jacket in the locker. Never got a chance to meet her...so badly wish I had! But her version of Jailbait has become my favorite. She was terrific!
Same
Same. I lost it.
SAME
literally boo-hoo crying!!
This band really deserves some kind of reference in Star Wars or something. Truly amazing
I discovered this documentary yesterday and I am already obsessed. Looking at Halyx t-shirts today. Why do I have such deep nostalgia over something I JUST discovered? I am at a loss over how I am feeling about this. Halyx has been on my mind for 24 hours.
😂😂
WHAT!!!!!!! Just drop a full-length documentary. Thanks, Kevin and everyone who pitched in on indiegogo
You're welcome.
“There’s never gonna be a bunch of nerdy young people that want to know about Halyx or hear it”......... BAH GAWD it’s Podcast the Ride’s music!
Never underestimate the power of a cult fanbase
I was super young when I saw these guys perform at Disneyland. I had just gone on Star Tours with my mom and sister and thought that these guys were Star Wars related as well. I remember telling my friends at school in the fall that I saw the Star Wars band. :D
I was 15 when Halyx had their brief existence. To my eyes and ears, there should have been a place for Lora Mumford in early 80’s rock. To me she occupied a viable space among her contemporaries that was accessible but more aggressive than Rindy Ross of Quarterflash yet didn’t mimic the virtuosic Pat Benatar. At the very very least she’d have made a hell of a background singer for Benatar. It’s a real shame no one was willing to pick her up where Disney left off and explore her considerable talents. RIP.
No freaking way did Disney greenlight a live Star Wars-esq. rock band singing about "Jailbait" in the 80's.
EDIT: If Disney had any gumption, they'd dig deep into their archives for any Halyx material and milk it for what it's worth. Especially if they had tracks.
I could definitely see the band's material being part of Disney's Legacy Collection releases.
I’d go to California just to watch this!!
This documentary is the kind of thing you watch at 3 in the morning when you have insomnia, then the next morning when you wake up you wonder if the whole thing was just a weird dream you had.
I know this is a year old, but this entire documentary just auto played while I was asleep and the dream was incredible
I got this in the recommended today and I'm staring at the credits roll still thinking about the kids in the front row show after show, dancing in their seats, making 'H' for Halyx with their hands and proudly showing off their homemade merch to the band members. like thats the sweetest thing I've heard in a long time and now theres a small dedicated fanbase to the resurgence of Halyx and the emotional suckerpunch that everyone from the band except Lora got to see it got me down bad.
@Banana Can confirm 100% to every thing you said.
Can confirm. 2:22 right now
having this experience rn
Lora's fade is so heartbreaking.
Seeing her going from near stardom to a waitress job.
When the part about her passing away came up, I teared up.
In another world, they could've been stars.
Thank you so much for your excellent work, Kevin and everyone involved in this fantastic documentary.
Hearing Lora died was the biggest gut punch ever.
Anyone else want to point out how amazing and high quality this documentary is?!
I dunno, just the entire comment section, so this post makes no sense?
damn that detail about Lora's leather jacket really gave me chills 😭
I had seen this band several times in the Summer of '81 and over the years I had somehow forgotten about them. This doc was like a time machine that sent me to the past and helped bring back a flood of memories. Thank you, I absolutely LOVED it!
Lora doing the H symbol that the fans came up with is adorable. That still alone shows how much she loved what she was doing.
This should be on Disney+.
I couldn't have said it better myself!
As the 1st thing on the ticker when you load it up.
Why? Disney doesn't like people talking badly about their past. Anything that happened. Be good or bad. They sweep it under the rug and pretend it never happened.
@@Qardo Oh, really? There's a chapter in _The Imagineering Story_ dedicated to Superstar Limo.
YES
It's stunning that I haven't heard of Halyx until seeing this video. Just, an absolutely priceless showcase of pure 80s rock n roll, laser rock shows, dudes with long hair, fawning over Star Wars, and so on, topped with a brutal story of a band that should've made it. That cover of Hey There Boys is absolutely chilling.
This really is the sorta thing Defunctland is all about- sure, Halyx might not be most important piece of Disney history, but to think I never would've known it existed if not for this. Once again, you push the envelope and raise the bar for the quality that content like this can reach, Kevin.
Thank you! The full cover of “Hey There Boys” is on my CZcams Channel.
Lora for Disney princess
Amazing stuff. What's crazy to me is that someone's small moment in time, say a family vacation... band playing in the background. For you it's nothing, just a park band... for that band it might be the biggest moment of their lives. All these small/huge moments going on all around us all the time.
It's incredibly distressing to come upon this and hear the love for the group that Lora never got to hear. There's something astoundingly tragic about people who put their heart and soul into a thing to only end up having it appreciated after they've passed on.
