      Zeon honestly had ALOT of good pilots and i think thats the real factor in how so many outdated machines could go toe to toe with some of the federations more advanced units you have hardened well trained pilots who been fighting almost 20 years vs mostly fresh or barely war tested feddies its no surprise. with ZZ its i feel terrain was a factor to they were fighting in the desert against pilots that had been fighting for almost 2 decades and thier machines were optimized for those condisions and home field advantage.

      @@chrisadams1814 An Ace pilot with a Juaggu could likely figure out ways to modify it to rectify any mobility issues it might have. Whether that be with additional thrusters, a better reactor/generator, etc. I mean, look at how nimble that Guncannon was, and that thing was probably being piloted by either an Ace or at the very least a seasoned and experienced pilot. The biggest factor when it comes to mobile suit performance has almost always been the skill and quality of the pilot in question.
      Like in SEED Destiny, Athrun was able to perform surprisingly well against one of the Gundams stolen by the Extended in just a Zaku Warrior....a unit that was undeniably inferior to the Gaia, Chaos, & Abyss. Not to mention Char's ability to perform well even against Amuro's Gundam in just a modified Zaku II. It's the pilots who make or break a given mobile suit in many cases. Even a sub-par unit could still perform well with a suitable pilot. Such as Amuro's RX-78-2 (which by that point was outdated and obsolete) making short work of Zeon's Gelgoogs (which outclassed the RX-78-2 by that point in terms of overall specs), all due to Zeon lacking pilots skilled enough to bring out the best of those Gelgoogs.

      What you said is true, a good pilot can make up for his machines faults. BUT still its going to be hard to out run a Ferrari with a Pinto.
      in Zeta gundam that GM2 pilot couldn't hit the Rick Dias's cause it was too unresponsive. that guy was old enough to be a vet. in the og Gundam Armuro "shot" down two pilots who were much more skilled them him on his first day as a pilot.
      basically what im getting at the suit doesn't make the man and the man doesn't make the suit. a good suit can make up for a midcore pilot and a good pilot can make up for a bad suit but they both will only go so far. Again we see that with Armuro in the OG hes basically just good enough to get it to move at first and the armor of the gundam keeps him alive till he can catch up then eventually is the gundam playing catch up.

    By biggest problem with every Gundam series is that instead of cool robot battles, every enemy HAS to be shown to be a threat to the protag first, thus it always feels forced when one suit from Zeon/the bad guys' team wipes the floor with a bunch of federation ones. Like, I get it, they are a threat; showing the elite team of modern MS get dominated by 3 rubber bands and a plastic tarp takes me more out of the action than into it.

    • @WordBearer86
      @WordBearer86 Před 5 lety +25

      Nail on the head. My biggest issue, well with anything involving drama, is the absurd levels they will often go to heap as much (unnecessary) drama as they can into every last scene because...?!!?! Case in point: last five or so episodes of 0083. A colony drop, several plot twists and betrayals, plus the concluding of the series long duel between the main two characters of the show just IS NOT ENOUGH drama apparently. No we gotta toss in a love triangle from out of left field and oh one of Nina's old friends gets shot because reasons.
      Origin actually gets it right, only to then bludgeon me over the head repeatedly with slapstick yuck yucks just incase I might've actually been even somewhat emotionally involved with the tragic events or emotional dialogue that had been taking place just moments before. Honestly this is the worst of the two. It's like if you were watching Stalingrad or Das Boot and moments after some shockingly tragic scene you get Colonel Klink and Sgt. Shultz doing a bit.

      Huh? Most times in Gundam series the enemy is fielding better suits, it's kinda rare for the outdated stuff to hold up.
      And if you dont show the antagonist to be a threat....uh what's the point of the show? Like if we never see the enemy beating something, why should we even be invested in what the protag is doing? We just see character after character get their ass kicked by the protag? Hows that an interesting watch?

    • @scythedd7
      @scythedd7 Před 5 lety +30

      I'm literally trying to think of times we see a bunch of low performance "bad guy" suits wreck good guy high performance units: any time it happens in OG Gundam it's because Amuro is inexperienced, by the series mid point anything giving him trouble isnt low performance. Other then the Gundams, all the AEUG suits are generally worse than all the Titan stuff, not an issue in CCA, the Federation is using incredibly outdated suits in F91, and even worse so in V. Other then the final fight in 0080, every fight is between generally equal performance machine, and while we see a lot of fed suits merced at the start of 0083, that's more about green pilots vs hardened veterans. And they mostly win on account of the high performance Gundam they just stole. So what moments in UC Gundam besides the one episode in Unicorn and the general derp of ZZ do we see the antagonist use "three rubberbands and a tarp" to wipe modern elite good guy teams? It's almost always done by the newest high performance suit they just rolled out

      Well there's the fight between Scarlet Team and the Kampfer in 0080, in which the Kampfer defats 6 (presumably elite) MSs, including two GMs Sniper II, which were supposed to have better stats than the Gundam itself !
      Though this one is more a case of stupid tactics than pilots incompetence. The Feds should've dropped one sniper away from the Kampfer and sent the rest to distract Mikhail, this way the sniper could've shot the Kampfer from afar. But instead they decided to drop the entire team at CQC range, go figure.
      Also from 0080, there's the second fight scene in ep1. Technically it doesn't really count since the Feds canonically won that one, but during the entire scene we see Zakus curbstomping GMs Command, which is ludicrous. The original GM was already superior to the Zaku in every way, so the Commands should really be more talented than that.
      Damn, they don't even manage to kill Bernie. Sure, they shoot him down, but he's a rookie facing experienced soldiers (GMs Command are usually given to commanders or elite pilots), this should've been an instant death for him !

    Random fact: During Zeta Gundam when Reccoa defects to the Titans in a Gelgoog captured by the AEUG in the remains of a Zeon ship, the Gelgoog was not actually the Gelgoog. Instead, the AEUG took that Gelgoog's armor and put it on the frame of a Nemo, resulting in a normal Gelgoog with stats being atleast on par, if not better than, the GM Sniper II *(This is a good thing, the Sniper II was the most powerful GM variant of the OYW and was whole lot better than the Gundam in every which way on paper and the Nemo is based off the Sniper II)*

The same concept probably led to the RMS-106 the need.to keep the aggressor Zaku II units running with a supply chain issue probably led to units with RGM-79 parts field retrofitted in making more like a Zanny. The data getting fed back would have led to the brass requesting AE design a new unit in the zaku line that used RGM standard parts to save on costs.

    What's interesting is what series you watch should be a huge factor for the difference a suit makes.
    The Zaku I wasn't exactly a WWI tank. It was exceptionally sophisticated, and had generally good performance. A Zaku II, which came out in the same year, shouldn't be a huge leap above it. At the very least, it should have almost no difference in ground battle if we're talking a realistic scenario like 08th Team. No huge leaps and flying around. With all the visual range fighting, the fire control system shouldn't be as big a difference as the show makes it seem. With all the software based information, I'd think a software update should be enough for most situations.
    Outside the Earth's atmosphere is probably a much bigger story. Full freedom of movement and the removal of that big gravity element should make a difference in powerplant much more meaningful.

Operation Odessa was basicly D-Day and as Zeon got pushed back like the NAZI they became desprate and threw everything they had into "Wunder" weapons like Mobile armors streching thier factories and resources to the absolute limit. i dont think Zeon would have "Won" the war even if the Gelgoog got rolled out sooner and they had pilots but probobly would have led to somekind of armistence instead and both sides would just turn back and lick thier wounds.

    I would say that a sniper unit has a slightly easier job of performing well despite its disadvantages. It is basically just part of a mounted cannon or turret at that point, since it just relied on the airship for movement. No maneuverability required.
    Of course, this principle also applies to real life snipers. General precision and reliability shot to shot can lead to older items, such as bolt action rifles, to perform admirably.

    *cough cough* Don't you mean Earth Zeon remnants? The whole reason why they had outdated tech was because they had been waiting for the chance to rejoin Zeon's war of independence ever since the OYW, being abandoned after Operation Odessa like many others we see in both 0083 & 0088. They were however assisted by 2 Zee Zulu's and their pilots gifted to Looni's group by Full Frontal as a fake reassurance, but that's it on the "neo-zeon remnant" side.

I managed to kill one and made the other one run off (the one i killed got smacked on the backswing of my beam naginata and got hit with the offhand end of it). They couldnt move me off their target. Luckily my team mates came over right when the other guy ran off. Im known for jumping in between my down allies and their attackers making myself a shield. I do like their variety of mobile suits (I’m not really into the amphibious ones because they are a little too ugly looking... but the Z’gok is a cool looking amphibious mobile suit). If I was to use a Zeon mobile suit... I think I would use a Zaku II with a mostly black with some lime green paint job & use a 100 mm machine gun as the primary weapon for it & also use a short sword type weapon for melee combat (if possible).

    Unicorn is fair IMHO
    while showing the usual Zeon is badass, they also have rare normal Feds aces, like the fearsome Byarlant custom and the awesome Stark Jegan pilot

    I used to chuckle at that first scene. I was like. That’s actually kinda wild if that was real. Museum pieces still fighting at war. Then I looked at real life and was shocked.

      Those weren't outdated, in book 2, it is shown that those Gelgoogs were fitted with the newest technology and armor, including Federation tech

    No Gundam Mk. II? It was a hop skip and jump from being outdated even when it rolled out, and did reasonably well through both the Gryps and 1st Neo Zeon wars. Even beyond, if you count MSV-R.

    • @rodrigs9976
      @rodrigs9976 Před 5 lety

      Lans32485 well I guess one of the things that kept it from falling behind was it’s movable frame that helped it keep up with other suits of the time, but yeah...it only took about just over a year after it was introduced for it to start lacking against newer suits. When it was assigned to the Gundam Team in ZZ Gundam it got its ass handed to it towards the end. It was salvaged & repaired then placed in storage along side the Zeta Gundam by the Federation apparently.

      @@rodrigs9976 Way less than a year. The only really innovative thing about the Mk. II was the movable frame, and after the AEUG stole them, AE didn't waste any time making use of the tech. Heck given it's better armor, acceleration, and limited flight capabilities on Earth without a subflight unit, I'd say the Marasai, one of the first MP suits to use movable frames, was at least equal to the Mk. II, especially given how close Kammile and Jerid's duel in Jaburo was. And that was before most of the transformables started popping up.

    It would have been amazing if you mentioned uma lightings gelgoog and other gelgoogs of chimaera Corps. They where all upgraded and some completely overhauled around UC 0090( only 6 years before unicorn) by Anaheim electronics. There was even a gelgoog completely reworked for the returning of Johnny Ryden. It completely out preforms many contemporary mobile suits of the time.
    Maybe you can do a part two to this video.

    Excellent video. I always have a soft spot for outdated technology that lasts well beyond its intended service life. That said...could these suits then be considered ahead of their time?
