    Thought experiment, if a felon points a gun at a pregnant woman's belly, and you shoot him, is that mercy or justice? If God opens the ground and swallowed up the wicked isrealites, was that mercy or justice? Mercy or those who served him and justice for those who were in rebellion. Aquinas was a poor communicator and he was following a line of thought similar to Aerostotle. The atributes or essences and maybe a better word would be an aspect of God. For example Paul talks about the fruits of the spirit and the greatest is love. Really what I think Paul is saying is not that love is greater then the other aspects of the fruits of the spirit but that the fruits of the spirit are all aspects of one thing and that is love itself. God has shown us aspects of himself and if he hadn't done so we wouldn't have a Bible. He described himself as, the way the truth, and the life, and these are aspects of what separates God from his creation. Jesus said no one is good but God, and he was a human but he was also God and he was indeed good, but wanted to test the man to see if he really understood what he was saying. We are not good, kind, loving, apart from God but because of Grace we are by connection with God through Jesus by which we obey his will.

    I appreciate James' words, but Why are we even discussing this topic? I think there are people who want to divide theological hairs so fine it becomes a sort of Zeno's paradox where we can never arrive at a knowledge of God's attributes.

      Watch the entire lecture. There are some reformed folks that try to make anyone that does subscribe to Thomas Aquinas as heterodoxal.
      But White is saying basically what you said. He's explicitly trying to show that some doctrines should not cause division, specially those in the camp of speculation. He points out that, while some doctrines are clearly derived from Scripture, others (like what's shown in this video) are merely philosophical implications.

    I love James White but this clip of him is positively cringeworthy. All of God’s REVEALED attributes REFER to ONE SIMPLE THING… i.e. God. They don’t refer to PARTS of God. They simply refer TO GOD, the ONE and SIMPLE being. This isn’t a big jump at all. Whenever we see Justice in this world we KNOW that it is God at work. Whenever we see Love in this world we KNOW that is God at work. Whenever we see Good in this world we KNOW that it is God at work. Whenever we see Truth in this world we KNOW it is God at work. All of these REVEALED attributes that we see IN THE WORLD refer back to ONE BEING, who is perfectly simple and is OUTSIDE the world.
    We would expect God’s understanding of Himself to be different from our own. Ours is REVEALED and MEDIATED through the world God created. He does not REVEAL HIMSELF to HIMSELF. His knowledge of Himself is innate and simple and perfect. It is UNMEDIATED. So no, God does not learn about Himself by REVELATION THROUGH THE WORLD He has made. He does not need to “distinguish” his attributes WITHIN HIMSELF, as if they are things to be distinguished within Him (i.e. parts). It is OUR KNOWLEDGE that is REVEALED KNOWLEDGE and MEDIATED KNOWLEDGE. All that God reveals about Himself through His attributes refers (i.e. reveals) GOD, the one simple being.
    Finally, yes… God’s wrath is the same thing as His love and mercy. We can even understand this from our position quite easily. God’s WRATH against lies and sin is also a great LOVE towards truth and goodness. His judgment against the wicked and their impending destruction is a great MERCY towards all those who God loves and saves. Why? He removes from the world all that is evil (i.e. the wicked) for the benefit of those whom He is saving forever. That is a GREAT MERCY for us. Every single thing we could say about God could be articulated in the same way… with each act of God ultimately revealing additional attributes of God when understood correctly. It is exactly this point that makes ALL OF GOD’s works “multifaceted” and not “one dimensional”. It is Dr. White’s view as expressed here that SMASHES down the acts of God by making us consider them in a one dimensional mode… God’s wrath against sin being that and ONLY that… without a consideration to how it is also a great mercy towards us.

      Even God’s judgment toward the disobedient is an act of mercy. We see this in the Fall. Being chased from the garden lest they eat of the Tree of Life is at once an act of mercy and Justice. It is one act. God does not exercise an attribute absent all his other attributes.

  • @Kevinthedude2000
    @Kevinthedude2000 Před 2 lety +4

    There is no chasm. All attributes of God being one singular metaphysical [thing] is simply a logical extent of God being without parts and makes no practical claim beyond that; there are no additional assertions being made so there is no mysterious gap that requires evidence to bridge.
    You can still describe the multifaceted nature of God with language that highlights specific results of His nature being expressed without giving up the truth that in the truest sense, ultimately, His nature cannot be broken down metaphysically.

    • @jschram84
      @jschram84 Před 2 lety +2

      This assumes that it is necessary for God’s attributes to be “one singular metaphysical [thing]”. His attributes certainly relate to one another, but I do not see them as different “parts”, making His simplicity in danger, nor do I see it necessary to try and merge them into a single metaphysic entity.

    • @Luiz__Silva
      @Luiz__Silva Před 2 lety +4

      And that's why this should not be controversial. Both claims are speculation since we do not have such an insight in the inner being of God.
      As for me, I think requiring all attributes to be one is just silly. Attributes are not parts. A person can he tall and thin and tan and many other attributes that come out of one being and yet they are just different attributes describing it. Unless one claims attributes are now like organs or limbs.

    • @Kevinthedude2000
      @Kevinthedude2000 Před 2 lety

      @@Luiz__Silva The difference here is that we're in the realm of metaphysical Truth. The concept of "tall" and "thin" exist independent of any given person who can be described as "tall" or "thin". What is the absolutely perfect, all-inclusive definition of the concept of "tall"? There isn't one, as "tall" is a relative descriptor. The only way to define something as "tall" is to compare it to something else that is either more or less "tall".
      At the level of absolute Truth, each of God's attributes can only be described fully and accurately by a single common definition, "That which God Is". Anything else is either an incomplete definition or relies on a source of metaphysical Truth outside of God (which I assume we agree does not exist). Therefore, since each attribute has the same definition, they must be the same thing.

      @@joshuakelley1677 Citing Scripture would be necessary if I were making any additional unsubstantiated claims that we don't already agree on, but I'm not. Assuming we agree that God be separated into unique metaphysically parts, the only option remaining is that He must be one. We have an upper and lower bound for God metaphysically that leaves only one possible option.
      We believe God exists (0
