Watched with VR Headset
Was I the only one crying? It feels like I was seeing memories of a dying person? He was telling the story while you were in his shoes, watching his adventure with his friends, all the love, all the memories. But that's what it felt like, and I'm super emotional 😭😭😭

This was amazing to watch with Google Cardboard, as if he is standing in front of me talking, then flying over the city.

You can't use it for too long without feeling sick but it's neat for short periods. Your phone also gets really hot in it so that's another reason not to use it for long at once. It's cheap though and worth it to mess around with here and there. You can get an app to take 360 degree photos that you take by slowly turning around where you stand. Also probably the best part besides these videos is using Google Street View where you can go around the world in Street View VR :D
Wow, this is amazing, love the idea. Also the 3D aspect of the video quite literally gave the video an entire different look.
I love this. It's even better viewed on a Samsung Gear VR headset

I have 1080p display monitor, but switching video quality from 1080p to 4k looks so much better. Video compression is real.
this is a 4K VR video, which means the full 360 degrees image is rendered in 4K, when you watch this you only see a part of the image (because you're watching in vr), that's why it's such a difference and that's also why the quality usually sucks when you're watching vr

The New York Times should know it is not VR but a 360 video. Soon all content having 360 degree of freedom will become VR.
I'm sorry but you're wrong. This one is, in fact, one of the VERY precious few 360° videos doing the rounds that are true Virtual Reality in both the visual and aural senses of the term -despite the obvious lack of head tilt and autonomous movement of the viewer inside the scene- because it's ACTUALLY stereoscopic. Just pause the movie in VR mode but without using a headset exactly at the 1 minute mark and look carefully at the guy's hands in the close foreground. Keep the phone steady with the right hand of the guy in the center and compare the image from each feed, right and left, and you'll see that those are actually two different images captured from two different POV at eye separation distance.
I share your disdain at the current trend of labelling spherical projection movies from mono sources as actual VR -99,9% of "360 vr" movies on youtube or more, indeed, fall into that category- but this one? No way, this one is truly 360, high res stereoscopic bliss, even if you don't like the theme. To each his own.
Oscar Jimenez 360 videos are great. I have nothing against them. Except that they are not VR. 360 video clearly tells that it is a video that has 360 degrees. Stereo or not. VR tells you that it is computer generated image that makes you feel you are there via headset and/or controller. Coining them both VR gives too much of an expectation to 360 video and an understatement of actual VR.

I see what you mean, but then, that's a discussion about terminology. If we walk that slippery slope, maybe it could be argued that EVE Gunjack or Bandit Six aren't virtual reality, neither, as the level of interactivity with your surroundings in those games never go beyond the world around you being mildly affected by your gazing around. They're like 360 stereoscopic Mad Dog McCree on steroids, basically. And even considering the best experiences that home VR has to offer right now, with demos like Dinosaur Island running on top-of-the-range rigs we're still limited in the sense that we're relying on only two senses, sight and hearing, out of five. And with serious limitations also regarding movement and body awareness, let's not forget. Many elitists would argue that even the best of the best that we have now in the market (and even what isn't yet) can't be deemed true "virtual reality" based on that.
Personally, I set the lower, level-entry bar regarding what's VR on 360°, stereoscopic experiences of reasonable visual and aural quality. That's the bare minimum to achieve slight peaks of "presence" on many study subjects, as being free to look around wherever one likes implies a minimum level of interactivity by itself easily comparable to many real-life situations. 360° mono videos rarely are able to imbue that level of presence, if at all, unless the test subject's already impaired somehow and has actual issues to perceive depth in real life situations too.

If I told New York magazine that I would like to take a picture of a stranger walking, and we're going to glue a huge version of it to a NYC street then take a larger picture of it from a helicopter, and that will be the cover of the magazine. They would've sent me to Bellevue...not happening for me...this was wasted energy on the part of a lot of people. No wonder why we're all going nowhere.

I shoot 360 video, and have seen and produced many examples. The resolution here is very low, even viewed at 2160 (4K). The stitching in the moving clip is conspicuously off and distracting. This video will set back interest in 360 VR videos, and it is appalling that the NYTimes has such low quality standards.

I had to manually set the resolution when watching on my iphone. The Auto selection was unwatchable. I experienced no delays or stops at 1440 (full HD resolution).
