Hyenas and african wild dogs are my favorite predators. In this video I loved how the original 3 held their food (ground) as the other clan made threats a while this was going the lone male of the trio was alone in the begining of the supposed invasion. He made threats to the beligerents. He then went back to the kill and the females allowed him to eat, this time as one relieved him of his sentry post. Then the family of original three ate the rest of kill. This was beautiful! I am thinking that the other clan was perhaps full from a meal and going home but was curious of the scent of death for they could have easily overcome that trio. Or even that they recognized each others scent and the other group could have been a sister clan. At times hyenas will be seperate groups of clans related forming super clans with like 80 members on rare times they assemble this way! Hyeneas are so beautifully brutal.

As gory & gruesome as it appears to the human eye, it shows the extraordinary dynamics between hyena clans & even the rankings with a clan...It is about Extreme Survival in Africa, at any cost...Amazing Footage not often seen!

Spotted Hyenas are matrilineal, not matriarchal. If a male stays with his birth clan, he outranks any female his mother ranks above. It's just that most males choose to leave their birth clan for a better chance of breeding, and when they join a new clan they get the lowest rank because they have no relatives their to give them a higher one. Stop making them out to be female dominated- they just aren't.

Fantastic job on this rather difficult scene. I have to admit it was hard to watch the beautiful stately female kudu with that leg so mangled that there was no hope for her. But nature takes its course! Watching the opposing hyena clans was so very interesting. The sounds are legendary! Thanks for a very interesting glimpse at 'real life in the Bush'!

Extraordinary. We don't often see hyenas on the hunt in videos, thus their scavenger reputation, but with those bone-crushing jaws it is no surprise that two could take down a large beast just by breaking a leg or two. They are lucky the noisy clan fight didn't attract lions. That kudu almost disappeared, too. Incredible. It is always sad to see these kills, but that kudu's life nourished so many.

This individual kudu has no special importance in the kudu population. If the population is healthy/thriving then that's all that matters.

I've never not been able to watch a kill video but only made it 57 seconds into this one. Made me think about the psychology involved in that decision. So..if it was say a buffalo, I wouldn't have found it so bad. Is that because, from a human perspective, kudu are beautiful but buffalo aren't? (In the eye of the beholder, I know). Mind you, it's also because it's hyenas. Partly because they again aren't exactly attractive but mostly because hyena kills are mostly more grisly, and again from a human perspective, more cruel. Ok I'll shut up now!
