Lyrics:
Oh look at how she listens
She says nothing of what she thinks
She just goes stumbling through her memories
Staring out on to Grey Street
She thinks, “Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dream myself a thousand times around the world,
But I can’t get out of this place”
There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
But all the colors mix together - to grey
And it breaks her heart
How she wishes it was different
She prays to God most every night
And though she swears it doesn’t listen
There’s still a hope in her it might
She says, “I pray
But they fall on deaf ears,
Am I supposed to take it on myself?
To get out of this place”
There’s loneliness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It feels like cold blue ice in her heart
When all the colors mix together - to grey
And it breaks her heart
There’s a stranger speaks outside her door
Says take what you can from your dreams
Make them as real as anything
It’d take the work out of the courage
But she says, “Please
There’s a crazy man that’s creeping outside my door,
I live on the corner of Grey Street and the end of the world”
There’s an emptiness inside her
And she’d do anything to fill it in
And though it’s red blood bleeding from her now
It’s more like cold blue ice in her heart
She feels like kicking out all the windows
And setting fire to this life
She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright
But all the colors mix together - to grey
And it breaks her heart
It breaks her heart
To grey - Hudba
I was diagnosed with blood cancer yesterday. I attended my 19th or 20th Dave show last night. He closed with Grey Street. The way that song became so symbolic to me in a matter of seconds. Dave has saved me many times over the past few decades. He’ll bring me through this too.
Sending you love and positivity! You will beat this!
Dear God! Best of thoughts and wishes for you to overcome this!
How are you lately? Sorry about what you're going through. Sending you love and positive vibes.
Hope you get well soon, hang in there as much you can ❤
❤ People you don't know exist are praying for you.
I have been listening to music for 63 years and this version of this song kills me every time.
I liked the lillywhite version better .
Yep
Wait until you hear all of different versions, for example the 6.26.2000 lyrics.
And it breaks your heart
listen to gorge version
Carter is amazing...open handed drummer, doesnt cross his hands....hes 65 years old....amd dave is almost 60....damn amazing
One of the few bands ever that sounds better live
All their live albums are outstanding! The only studio tracks I have were from the local library. The Gorge, Red Rocks, Atlanta, New York, all amazing!
GD was another one
No one yell-sings like Dave Matthews. Master of the sing-yell.
The Dave Matthews "sing yelling always sounds awesome. Dave never will let you down and cheat on "sing yells" by singing something lower in pitch to save his voice, Dave doesn't do that almost never. He goes for and hits his sing yells with spot on correct pitch right in tune and he has complete control of his voice. He's amazing live.
This is a perfect example of Leroi’s ability to play with heart and soul. It’s a performance where the music, particularly Leroi’s solo, really transcended the moment. To me, the sound coming from Leroi’s sax sounds like a lost soul wailing out its feelings of desperation, hopelessness, depression that the song was intended to represent.
We will always love ❤️ and miss the grux king 👑
This is my song. I’m still listening. DMB is pure joy
Seeing Dave live for the last 20 years of my life has been the greatest experience of my life!!! I pray we have 20 more years!
Agreed
You have tickets for this year?!?
@@BrookeMcLymond Not yet. I usually go on Stubhub about a month before the show and buy.
This album is one of the reasons Im still breating, it lifted me up on a very dark time!!!! Thanks a ton DMB!!!
One of the best albums ever made from top to bottom... yet the one that gets the least play ! Haha
Agreed. I’m right there with you.
Me too brother...almost ended it all but DMB saved me
Me too!
I was there. 🥰
Its 2022. Whose heart jumped when the camera panned over to Leroi? Loved seeing the old band together like this makes me teary eyed.
🥹 yeah
Me too. Same thing happens when I see older clips of Bruce Springsteen in the E St. band with Clarence Clemons. I never connected those 2 guys like that before. Very similar in a lot of ways.
This is my favorite version of the song because of how long Leroy gets to shine at the end. Gives me chills every time I hear it because you feel the passion and attention in his playing. I went to see them play the gorge the year after he passed…when they played this song, the crowd simultaneously cried and danced at the same time while the band jammed like I’d never heard before-or still to this day. He was truly a force of nature when he touched that sax
It's wild to me that Leroi has been gone for almost 15 years. RIP the GrooGrux King!
What would they do without Carter Beauford in this band? What a drummer! 😊
best version of grey street out there. been listening to dmb for over 20yrs, been to 8 live shows. their music got me through some tough times. Makes listening to it now that much better. Thanks guys.
This is a complete composition. A masterpiece. They are putting a clinic here.
It really is if you stop and listen to what everyone is playing at the end of the song when everyone is jamming. There's definitely a lot going on and it all goes together so well they say they blend.
That saxophone takes over the whole song and I love it
LeRoi. 😭💔
I remember hearing this song for the first time on the radio during the summer of 2003. That saxophone literally had me hooked the first time.
Greatest live band of all time
The recording of this concert is amazing! You can literally hear each instrument individually, love it
Thank God for The University of Virginia Music Director who made him record a demo back in 1990. Crowning achievement of that University
UVA
That bass is the most underrated thump in the entire world
This is such a powerful and very underrated masterpiece!! Love hearing it live!!! God Bless DMB!!
One of the best live sets ever!
This live album doesn’t get much better. Awesome
Still the BEST! Grey St. rules!!
This is my favorite song.
Not a musician but these people will forever be my heroes
Dave, Carter and band. Listen man. Carter, you have the most influence on me. My life goal is to meet you Carter, and shoot the shit for a while. I saw yall in 2008 with my cousin at the West Palm Beach show. LeRoi was not able to make it, we all know why. It still stings me to this day, and I do NOT regret driving down there to see you. My mom bought me your 2003 Central Park concert CD in 2005 and she had NO idea how much that meant to me. Listening to your records and everything else. Your snare ( Dunnett, of which I am FB friends with him) caught my eye and ear, and I am SO thankful. Carter, can we PLEASE meet sometime? I will meet you anywhere man, I really ( not trying to be selfish here, but you ARE Carter afterall) would enjoy seeing you.
I've watched this dvd around the time it came out, over and over again. never noticed the dog at 3:33 until now🤣
I've listened to this song for like 3 days straight
Leroi playing 2 different saxophones in 1 tune is some master class shit.
Jeff Coffin played both at the same time in Camden 2019🎉🎉😢😢
Some of the best lyrics ever! Love DMB! ❤️
What a tremendous song. Miss the Lillywhite Session Days.
Thanks for being beside me for 20 plus years DMB
the bass line is a masterpiece!
I was about to comment this before I read it, so underrated.
Best bass line I've ever heard, and I've listened to quite a lot. Exceptional, how it weaves in and out, the variations, tempo changes, and flairs. And Beauford's drums bring it all together. Simply God Tier!
Seen them From Irvine California to South Lake Tahoe and they only Keep getting better
I love the jam at the end of the song. Between the sax playing an awesome improv solo and and that cool riff coming from the violin while Dave plays his ulta cool rythem part on thw 12 string. There is so much going on at once yet it all blends together creating this awesome sound. Thats DMB !!!
This was the first DMB song I ever heard. It started the obsession!
I remember when this was one of the "new songs" dave was playing at every concert to promote the new CD coming soon at the time. The first time I heard this song at a concert live. Bartender too he was playing that just about every concert that yeAr as well. I want to say it wAs at Hartford Connecticut first time I heard both songs
*2003, a good year for music*
❤💛💚❤💛💚❤💛💚❤💛💚
DMB 🎤🎹🎸🎷🎻🎺🎶
I want these years back 🙏
Christ all I see whenI hear this song.. I close my eyes is the love of my life...at one time. This song was very important
I can not believe I forgot about this song. The moment I heard it... snaps you right back to a different time in life. Also, the bass is very easy to hear in this version.
Not really a DMB fan. But this song is an absolute masterpiece!
One of the tightest rhythm sections of any band period! Lessard doesn't get enough credit compared to Beauford. Guys a beast on the bass!
Amen!! Stephan is a bass God
Gotta think, Carter is literally one of one. There will never be another pair of hands to man a kit like Carter does. Man is a goddamn monster.
Clarence is the most incredible drummer ever 🎵🎶🎵🎶
Carter but yeah lol
0:38 you can hear the soul in those words
My favorite song ever!
Best version!
Wow they look so young and Leroi was still alive. I got to hear them play this song live this summer. They are still great.
Amazing performance, as usual!
Yeah, im crying and it's all that I want to do in this time. Thanks for everything you left here by us, DMB!!
Immediately thought of a friend I lost. Too young. Love Dave and company!
2:32-2:59 is pure magic
❤
Only DMB’s drummer can have so many fills and still be tasteful. Def one of my favorite drummers
Carter Beauford. One of the greatest drummers alive.
Carter is the best. He has that "light"
Neil Peart aside........
Carter is a good drummer, yes.
Good at jamming. But a great drummer absolutely not.
Absofrigginlutely
One of my favorite songs of DMB. So sweet, so sad, so cozy and very powerful! It is my lovely evening city walk in beautiful rainy weather.☔👢
'But all the colors mix together - to GRRREY⚡🔥
And it breaks her heaaart!'💔👍
Every DMB song I hear becomes my new favourite song🎷 wow!
3:30 Best seat in the house

Meeeeee
criminally underrated !!!
Not to those of us who matter. Including you. 🤍
Still an amazing band to this day but I really wish I would have went to see them back when all the original members were present.
This concert turns 20 today! Still my favorite DMB live album❤
There's so much good going on here. Thank you!
❤.
Incredible show. Top 3 for me to this day
I relate so much with the lyrics ... always !
First off, I feel like this is MY song. Every lyric feels like it was written for and about me. This particular version is my all time favorite. Can never get through the lyrics without breaking down. Love Dave Matthews Band. Thank you for this gem!
Have you checked out lyrics that have been changed like the 6.26.2000 show ones?
I feel it too about myself.
It’s the only way I have been able to describe my depression in words
Me too.
When I was in my 20s I felt the same way. Now a woman of 42, I realize this song got me to where I am today.
My all time favorite!!!!! Have seen him each time he comes to Northerly Island in Chicago , but this song is or miss when he comes!!! Such a fucking treat when he plays the most anticipated AND ANTS MARCHING!!!!!!!! Thank you for all the great concerts and amazing performances!
Leroy killed that solo
This is teamwork
Peak Dave
I had this song saved on my CZcams music for I don't know how long. I just recently started listening to it again and the lyrics so remind me of my own personal life and I love the music with those powerful synthesizers. Just love this song
Not that I need a funeral. But when I go..... May one person listen to this song. Just one. I'm really not picky. I got to see this live.....
Thank you DMB for helping me through this rough world we live in #2020
Omg watching this right now during corona is giving me SERIOUS Dave withdrawals!!! I pray to God this is over by next year. I can't miss another year. I live for this!!! Who's with me???
I WAS THERE AT CENTRAL PARK THAT NIGHT AND NEVER GET TIRED OF HEARING THIS SONG
Hope you made it. My wife gave me Central Park Concert DVD. I listened to it so mùch that she said no more. I negociated to every other weekend. Happy Wife, Happy Life.
I live on the corner of grey street...
At the end of the world...

What a great but sad, sad, song.
I read a comment on this page, this is the best song in the Dark and in the light..that really does sum up Grey St..A Masterpiece!!!
I think I live on Grey St...
This is when Dave and the crew were fun and fabulous.
This concert was definitely their peak
They still are
Fucking adore DM.
Still so amazing!!! What a band!!!
3:33 dog is loving that solo.
Lmao

I first heard this like in 2000 love this song! So underrated
That last note he sings he just nails it IN PERFECT TUNE TOO amazing!!!
I was at this concert and made the video (crush). Saw dave outside of of Central Park with his wife a baby that week. Best jam band ever!
Dave Matthews knows the soul! ❤
My favorite song is gray street ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎉🎉
I had live a million lives in only 30 yrs❤
Thank you for singing my soul. ❤
Most underrated drummer.
carter isnt underrated at all. he has been celebrated for decades now. maybe not to the level of someone like neil peart from rush since carter isnt quite that amazing but he has gotten plenty of attention for his work in this band
@@trenken Yes he is revered by many drummers and musicians. Most drummers that have their feet in a lot of different genres know of him I would say. Now a real underrated drummer would be Steve Jansen of Japan and Nine Horses. Check out the English band Japan, they have some really cool stuff if you are into Glam rock and 80s pop.
This might be their best song
Carter never looks like he's working very hard haha
Dmb, thank you for saving my life
Few people appreciate the magnitude of the crowd that day. Cameras do not do it justice.
This song reminds me of the all screaming voice of the universe.
My song❣️. Much LoVE y'all ❣️
In my mind the most amazing C.D. set ever made and this song is one of the best
So looking to when I can see DMB after this pandemic 😷 Thank you 🙏 for beautiful music to make the days better
greatest live show ever? might be
best version of grey street
Love this song !!!❤
It’s a beautiful song about a stranger.
How beautiful is that.
Yes
Epic
