Cord, Cord. This is one of my favorite cars; I have a diecast model of this same convertible on my desk (except in maroon). I was at a car show last Fall and came upon a guy who was sitting at the side of the road in his Auburn Boattail Speedster. He had run out of gas! Since he was on a curve, I got behind him and used my flashers to warn other cars until someone came from the show with gas. On the 810/812, the wheels were originally solid, but the brakes tended to overheat, so Cord put a perimeter of holes to air-cool the brakes. Oldsmobile did a tribute to these wheels on the 1966 Toronado, which was the next production American front wheel drive car introduced 30 years after the 810; the Toronado grille and pop-up headlights also harkened back to the Cord. She's a Beauty is one of my favorite tunes from the 1980s; the Tubes with a medley of their hit! Great video!
Enough people that could afford these during the great depression just goes to show you. Just like today with $100,000 toys, RV's, Pickup Trucks, and the economy is supposed to be bad? This is what happens when you live on credit. My grandparents were born in the 20's and told me how it was in those days before the crash, and then after. Both of them were determined never to buy stuff on credit if at all possible. If they didn't have the cash to buy something, they just did without it.
Easily one of the most beautiful cars of all time. Saw one at a show today and just stared at it for a long time and kept seeing new lines I didn’t notice before
I love the design of this car.. The four-door has way more space in it, both head room and actual space. There is more space in this than a packard darrin.. and the gauges are nicer and interior was better. And way more space the only downer is visibility isn’t great and can’t see anything out the rear so side mirrors are a must

If you’re tall the packer Darren doesn’t fit tall people but the cord well the only downer with the cord is visibility..

1) 812, duh! LOL (in that dark blue, plz!) 2) 812! Well, thank you, Jay, for making me leave a huge puddle of drool on my keyboard! There are some iconic cars in our history. The '56 Continental Mark ll. '57 Chevy. '59 Caddy. '64 1/2 Mustang. '73 Riviera boat-tail. '77 Mark V (oh, yes I went there!)... But, above all else, these Cord's are by far the most beautiful rolling pieces of artwork to ever grace our roads. Absolutely gorgeous!!! Funny how, 33 years later, AMC transplanted the back seat into it's Gremlins though... LOL. Thanx, Jay! You frikkin' rock!

I've loved '36 & '37 Cords since I was a little kid in the 1960's. My Dad bought me a model (Monogram) of the '37 Cord when I was about 8 years old and he and I spent a couple weeks putting it together. We actually saw one on the road in Kansas in about 1968 during a vacation at a Motel. My Dad was a no nonsense guy and always bought "practical" cars like Plymouths and Ramblers. He clearly did appreciate Automotive art when he saw it though. He described a Cord driving down a road in Arkansas when he was about 18 in Fayetteville Arkansas and said he felt like he was seeing something from outer space!

Seeing this car, I can't help imagining Myrna Loy and William Powell ... maybe even Clark Gable ... such beautiful design.
Cowboy actor Tom Mix died in a very high speed wreck in a yellow Cord 812 Phaeton.
He bypassed barricades (or so the story goes) at speed estimated to be near the car's maximum, lost control at a dip in the road, and when the car overturned his aluminum suitcase (rumored to be full of cash and jewelry) which had been in the back seat hit him in the head, fracturing his skull and breaking his neck.
Just remembered this story, long time gone. My Pop told about driving and riding across the desert from Nevada to California in a Cord Phaeton, during his Air Corps service in WWII. He would have been between nineteen and twenty-three at the time.
When Cord bought Auburn, there were a bunch of unsold and unsalable cars in inventory.
E.L had those cars repainted in bright colors, installed bigger wheels and tires, and (here's the genius bit) raised the prices. They moved them out quickly and customers were clamoring for more.
Great video. Love this car. Reminds me of Cruella de Ville’s Duezenberg. You know the Auburn Speedster was used in an opening scene for Douglas Sirk’s “Written on the Wind”. It had Lauren Becaul as a love interest for Rock Hudson, 1953 I think. The car was great, bright yellow with the Cord snout and side pipes. They look so aggressive. The Soviet rocket propulsion exhausts used a similar system to increase the thrust.

Hi Jay!: What can I say it's an 812 Cord! They are SO nice looking! Actually the first front wheel drive racing cars were made by J Walter Christie in the early 1900's. What is interesting about them is that the engines were transverse, very similar to the modern day front wheel drive cars! Gotta give the cramped feeling a little break on the convertible! Would seem much more roomy with the top and windows down! The silver piece right under the carburetor is your supercharger. It sucks the air/fuel mixture down into the intake compressing it (of course). The cylindrical unit on top of the transmission is your vacuum shift mechanism. There is a little rod at the front that selects the gears. Funny you mentioned the 1937 Ohio River flood. My dear departed Daddy, was living in West Virginia in those days not fa( from the river. He told me of houses floating down stream! Buildings in Huntington were flooded two floors up! A REAL disaster! As was the Hindenburg tragedy. A final Cord fact, and related to the skimpy trunk space in them. Tom Mix was killed in 1940 when he rolled his Cord convertible. He always carried a large Aluminum suitcase with his valuables on, the rear package tray of his Cord. When he crashed the suitcase flew forward striking him on the back of his neck and head and it killed him. That car was restored not too long ago. You should be able to find some pics on the net. A BEAUTIFUL car. Too bad it has such a tragic history!

The art deco is my absolute favorite! I've always admired the Cord and have been to the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Museum in Auburn IN. That's a great place to visit. BTW: Puzzled as to why there are two oil pressure gauges. Also note that inside the fuel gauge is a small oil level gauge which is very cool!

As a teenager, one of my most ambitious car model projects was an 812 convertable phaeton, this model- yellow, with a red interior. Super complicated - displayed it proudly for years. First FWD - don't forget about the Ruxton - how could you, no other car had that paint job! Another first - hidden gas filler. WYR - Cord both times - I can't pull off a Delehaye and since they only made FIVE of them, it's more academic than usual!
I want to cover a Ruxton so bad but that was 1930 cord L29 came in 1929..

One the most stunning and creative examples of automotive art, of the 1930s… for that matter any decade. Designed by a failing company on a shoestring budget, the Cord nevertheless turned out to be a keeper. Unfortunately, the car was too expensive, radical, and too small for the ones who could afford it. Ostentatious cars, even smaller, more practical sized ones were hated by the unemployed and by those living on a shoestring - being rich was most unpopular! So, few Cords were made, a last gasp of a great company, a casualty of the Depression.
This was an expensive car back in the day but it didn’t have all that much chrome on it it was kind of sort of the devoid of chrome.. Much like a 60s continental
One of my all time favorites, my father almost bought one after WWII.
Oh wow.. I like the 4 door version it had WAY more space both head and overall room like the four door was huge if I remember, correctly. But yeah this is a car I would own. The drive train is the only thing that would worry me. I talked to the owner of the burgundy one that I shot earlier this year and he said that you can get every single engine part for that car. Transmission parts they’re out there.. but the people who worked on these and know them are hard to find. And the shop books tell a lot but they don’t tell you everything. Like some tricks that only someone who worked with the same thing for years would know, long after the book was published.
@@What.its.like. Yes I remembering my father said the reason he did not buy it was because you would need to buy a metal turning lathe with the car and that was in the mid 40's.
I went to a wedding in Auburn, IN back In back in the '70s and as luck would have it, it coincided with a meeting of the ACD club. I got to sit in a Custom Beverly sedan (the one with the humpback rear end) and was especially blown away by the dashboard.

1:50 When I was a kid we had an elderly neighbor who had a Packard of approximately that vintage and an Apperson Jackrabbit in a detached garage behind his house. The Packard was rough, but the Jackrabbit was pretty much derelict, not even enough to part it out. The houses are very close together and I don't know how they got those cars out when the old man died.
That is a car that I really want to feature this year. I really want to feature a Ruxton as well. Last year I went after a bunch of cars that were raring unusual, but I found a lot of them at the Greenfield Village and I think that's what's gonna happen this year I think we're gonna have a month of just different cars that you never really heard of... and honestly I can't wait
I would take the Auburn 35 Speedster, and the 37 Cord 812. Did You Know? The Cord and the 1940 Packard Darrien were built in the same plant in Connersville Indiana? Yes the Packard Darrien's bodies were made in the Auburn plant after Auburn closed. Did You Know? Cord also owned Stenson Aircraft which is where the design for the hidden headlights came from. Stenson had hidden landing lights and they were the inspiration for the Cord 810/912 lights. Did You Know? The Bendix electro-shift gear box was also used in the Tucker Torpedo? (They took them out of Cords that the owners had grown tired of.) Did You Know? Gorden Buehrig, who designed the 810 for Cord drew his inspiration from the Stutz Blackhawk Land Speed Record car of 1928. In a 1980's interview he recalled how he was trying to give the Cord the same styling from that special record car built by Stutz for Frank Lockhart. He was trying to copy the coffin nose and to blend the streamlined spat covered wheels into the Cord's body. Those pipes on the 812 were exhaust pipes. The Lycoming V8 had the exhaust ports on the valley sides of the heads and when they installed the supercharger they had to find a different routing for the pipes. I doubt that rear view mirror is original. My Grandfather was one of the senior men in the interior trim shop at Auburn in Connersville and worked on many of the Cords. He lost his job when they closed but had a 1936 Auburn sedan he drove for many years afterwards.

I once had a model of a 1937 Cord made by Monogram in I/ 24 scale. AMT also produced a Cord 812 in a slightly larger scale. My cars of choice would be the Auburn and the 1937 Cord.
I really enjoyed this one!👍 More than once, my mother told me of the 812 Salon she and her first husband owned. She never quite forgave him for losing patience with the electric pre-select shifter and selling it. In the 1940’s it was just another low volume oddball that was a nuisance to maintain. If only he’d seen the future! I’d love a Cord 812. There was at least one fiberglass Cord replica. If memory serves, it (unfortunately) had fixed headlights, and it used Granada running gear.

I know there’s at least one company making cord fiberglass bodies there was one at Classic Automall and I did review it but the card corrupted and I lost that footage, and they sold the car so I found two for sale and they agreed. Those are built solid
The car you're thinking of was the Cord 8/10, an eight-tenths scale replica, built in 1965. It was the brainchild of Glenn Pray, out of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Gordon Buehrig (who designed the original) was involved, if I recall correctly. The car wasn't fiberglass...it was made with a thermoplastic called Royalite, from US Rubber. They used Chevrolet Corvair powertrains, forward-mounted, and turned around to drive the front wheels. The Cord Automobile Company made about a hundred cars, but couldn't really make a go of it. But it wasn't a schlock operation...Pray had serious deals with US Rubber, Chevrolet, and other large suppliers.

Someone did, in fact, make a fiberglass Cord replica somewhere around 1970. It did have fixed headlights and had a very kit-car look to it. I actually have a picture of one that I took when I was in high school. The Glen Pray cars were a much more faithful rendition of the original.

WYR1: Auburn Speedster, Outside the box, I'd go for a Packard Eight convertible, a '40 Darrin Victoria if such were available.
WYR2: Darrin, definitely, and I responded with the Darrin in WYR1 before I knew it would be an option in WYR2.

4:20- Those are not "intake pipes". Those are exhaust pipes. The flathead Lycoming intake + exhaust valve ports are both located on the top side of the engine, above the cylinder bores, if you're looking at it with the heads off. If you're not familiar with this flathead design, one might assume that the top side of the "V" is intake, and the bottom side is exhaust, as many modern Chevys, Fords, Dodges V8s are built today. But with the Lycoming flathead, both the intake AND the exhaust manifolds are located on the top side of the block. This probably throws them casual observer off.
The intake manifold and the exhaust manifold are both mounted to the top of the block, with the "in + out" ports alternating fairly close together.
In the normally aspirated cars, the exhaust manifold curves forward, then downward, then turns out towards the rear.
In the supercharged cars, the exhaust manifold bolts to that exact same place on the block, but instead is routed out the sides of the cowl. Look at a picture of the flathead Lycoming block (sans heads), to get a better picture.
Once they go out through the cowl, all four exhaust pipes enter the front fenders, and they then bend down towards the frame. At this point, two pipes on each side of the car "Y" together into one, and the same thing is done at the other fender. This now brings the four cowl exhausts down to 2 pipes, one on each side of the engine bay, down at the frame level. These two pipes then finally "Y" into one final exhaust pipe, at about the area underneath the front passenger seat. Then just behind the rear axle, this one final exhaust pipe crosses over to the driver's side, where it exits at the rear of the car.
Sorry for the long rant, but it just rubs my fur the wrong way to hear that those are intakes! 🤷♂️
Did I mention that the Cord was my father's dream car? He never achieved it. Myself, I'd love to have a Sportsman or a Phaeton!

This car is a "Convertible Phaeton Sedan", according to their literature. The Phaeton had a back seat. They also offered a "Convertible Coupe" that didn't have the rear seat, and a Sedan that was a conventional four-door, with a steel top.

Walter Christie built front-wheel-drive racers in 1904. I think that Harry Miller came later.
Alex Tremulis, who designed the Cord, later designed the Tucker. Reconditioned Bendix transmissions were used in production Tuckers.
First "would you rather" - no contest, the '37 Cord. Second one - I would have picked the Cord but then you showed a Packard. I would pick a classic Packard any day.

I think the styling of this automobile is bold and sexy,! The dash and gauges are beautiful, but I really love the look, especially the front end styling, of the Auburn, so I'd rather have that, and in the second, I'd pick the Packard. 😎 Video
Yeah I would pick the Packard over just about anything but after being in the Darren versus the cord the cord fits me better.. I would totally buy a cord 810/812 but in four door

2 different in line 4 slant cylinder a 389 V-8 cut in half 😲 used a V-8 Cylinder head and you could get a 4 barrel from factory 🤯1 version had almost 200 HP??
A 6cyl and a V-8 389 with the option for a 421. 3 or four variations of the 421 from 315 HP to 380 ?? If I remember right pretty close 👌.. U joints were the weakest part you had to upgrade yours after you snapped them 🤷😉 torque tube and rear transmission were automatics ??? 4spd manual transmissions with straight axle were options??? John Delorean had his skunk work's program before GTO dealer option 👍
Chevy had COPO program and a few dealerships like Yenko or Nickey that built the car of your dreams ...

The 1937 Cord 812 supercharged V8 put out between 170 and 195 hp from 4.7 liters. For comparison, the 1935 Duesenberg supercharged straight 8, DOHC produced 320 hp from its 6.8 liter engine.
The Duesenberg straight eight was a totally different level.. one day hoping to get the chance to cover a duesenberg.. if I remember correct that was the most powerful engine made in America until the Chrysler 300 came out.. and then mercury marauder
@@What.its.like. The '35 Duesenberg Model SJ, at 320 hp, was the most powerful production automobile engine in the WORLD! It made the gorgeous Mercedes 500K Roadster engine look like it was built in some kids's back yard! The 2 special Model SSJs were also the fastest production cars in the world, and held that esteem for many years. One was Gary Cooper's and the other was loaned to Clark Gable. They were reportedly rated at 400 hp! The 1958 Chrysler 300 D was rated at 380hp and the 1958 Mercury Marauder was rated at 400 hp, the first mass produced American car with 400 horsepower!
I don't know which I'd rather. I had a card similar to baseball trading cards of the 37 Cord when I was a kid. My dad hyped it up as a great car. It was definitely a rich man's car. Then, there was the Auburn featured in the Remington Steele TV show. It was an impressive car. As many times as I drove by Auburn, Indiana, where the Auburn, Cord, Duesenburg Museum is, I don't know why I never visited the museum. I guess, which ever became available is what I rather have. Or if I could drive all three maybe then I could deside.

It's a nice museum. Somehow I remember being especially impressed with the "design and/or engineering room". Looking at the drafting tables, it gave me a feeling as if the guys had just stepped out for lunch and would be back soon!

I should’ve sang 16 candles but I would pick the two-door version I would want the four-door version and there’s a whole lot more room in the four-door version.. they made a coupe as well.

When I was a little kid I remember my dad thinking of trading our Chevrolet for an 812 Cord to be our family car/daily driver. Mom talked him out of it. This would have been about 1956.
Still remember how excited I was during the test drive! I think the fact that it had to be jump started killed the deal.

The parts that you are calling duel cowls , are actually cowl vents they are installed in the cars cowl , the cowl is the section of the automobile that the firewall is attached to, just thought you might like to know

My Grandfather used to tell me of a Cord on his street as a kid and said people were actually scared of the car because of its pop up headlights.. I think the front drive Ruxton was before the Cord L29

Bucket list thing finding a Miller race car that was front wheel drive I found all the old advertisements if I lived back then I would’ve wanted Miller to build me a race car
My father restored one in the 1960's. He was unable to find some necessary transmission parts and couldn't drive it.

@@What.its.like. You just couldn't get those parts in the 1960's. You had to hire a machinist to fabricate them.
I believe you have mid spoke on side pipes on 812. Much like several flat heads like Cadillac the exhaust ports in block was on the top of block where overhead heads have exhaust in heads on sides
I’ve heard it both ways I always thought it was the exhaust but somebody corrected me and said it wouldn’t make sense for it to be the exhaust.. maybe when I go back I will look at the intake better.. why would it have both the side pipes and the exhaust pipe and cord is the only one that did it on both sides.. which I never knew I saw Duesenberg earlier this year and was mesmerized that the pipes are only on one side

You could have your non supercharger car upgraded to a supercharger charged model. Have been to the show in Auburn many times. Have even been involved in judging the show cars.
By the way have a 1937 812 phaeton in the barn. It is a non supercharger car.

There’s a company making fiberglass ones I saw one at Classic auto mall but it was fiberglass I did shoot an episode with it but it was on the card that got corrupted.. I actually went and found another cord to shoot because I thought that that would be an episode that a lot of people would like to see and I found that one for sale I can’t believe it’s still for sale.. it had some things small issues like the dashboard wasn’t right but he’s not asking crazy money for it and honestly if I had the money I would probably buy it..
I don't like the hood and grill shape, but the rest of the car is amazing

Nice video, just one correction. All 810 Cords were 1936 models, All 812 Cords were 1937 models. Not all 812 Cords were supercharged. Supercharging was an option on 812s, most 812 were not supercharged and they would not have outside pipes.

It’s been almost 25 years since I have seen one of the limousines they offered but it was really cool to see. It was in a restoration shop in Northern Kentucky just outside of Cincinnati. I’m thinking that the owner of the shop told me that it was one of six but I don’t remember for certain. Do you have any information on them? Thanks.
I’ve never seen this in a limousine in pictures or anything I never knew they made one that’s got me intrigued..
@@What.its.like. I’m fairly certain that the owner was from Texas and he owned several Cords. If you are interested I can probably come up with the name of the shop and the owner of the shop’s name. His wife and my sister in law were friends and she might still have some information about them.

For all the advanced engineering I find it odd that Cord chose to install intakes that draw unfiltered air from inside the wheel wells. I've got to think that was terrible for the life of the engine.
I thought it was exhaust but after seeing the exhaust pipe in the rear I would have to be intake.. plus if ti was exhaust i’d be worried about the tires because sometimes flames shoot out and get the gas that’s not totally vaporized.. and rubber is flammable
I'm afraid Jay got this wrong - those pretty chrome pipes connect to the exhaust manifolding that is located inside the vee, just beneath the intake manifold and supercharger. I note the air cleaner is missing.
Why would they do both.. i’ll ask Gary at the museum next time I’m there make a short about it

There you go again redefining words. That car is Not a dual cowl. Nor could it ever be described as one since its a 2 door. That is a split windshield. A dual cowl has a separate cowl and windshield for the back seat in a Phaeton body style.

There are antique military vehicle collectors groups in a great number of states that do display and rallies thru the year , if you Google you may find a group near you
