I have found that the grip on the left side of the cage is not long enough and interferes with the HDMI out for a field monitor. You can add a Ulanzi Falcam F22 Quick Release Dual Head Base and create basically a stand off riser to give it better clearance, but I wish they designed the grip a little better- so it ends up being a little further away from the camera body as to not obstruct the micro HDMI port
There are two types of custom cages. Kit cages, like this one, and modular cages like SmallRig. The crucial difference is in expand-ability. A kit cage, while they have accessories, has a fixed place for a few accessories designed for that kit. A modular cage will have 1/4", 3/8" and in some cases rosettes, Nato rails and ARRI locking pin holes all over the cage to allow the user to add accessories of any type in any way they see fit. For example on this the vast majority of these locking connectors look like they are either cold shoes or Nato/Nato like rails. Cold shoes, while great for mics and basic lights, are not that ideal for monitors, handles or magic arms, because as one adjusts or strains them the mounts often loosen and suddenly and unexpectedly the part falls off. Now with the locks on the parts designed for this it is unlikely those pieces will fall off, but they also limit one to just accessories designed for this cage. That magic arm looks to be about a 3-5 inch, but is there an 8" or beyond? Probably not, and as much as one might not think it's needed the point of the modular cage is to not question why a user needs what they need, but has the mount points for one to connect any of the standard universal accessories how the user needs and isn't limited to just one accessory element per side, because they are often cheese plated. Neither cage is necessarily better or worse than the other, but the more kit like a cages is the less expandable and in many ways limited the life of the cage. That said so long as a kit cage fit's all ones needs, then they often reg up much faster. Tilta is an example of a company who is sort of in the mid point. There cages often are only compatible with certain Tilta accessories for the most part, but then offer Rosettes and lots of 1/4", 3/8" mount points for more universal accessories as well. The one thing I see lacking on this particular Ulanzi cage is 1/4" and 3/8" mounting holes.
I've found time and time again, that what I think I need and what I end up needing are often different. It's hard to plan when I don't try understand the depth I end up going... thinking I'll just surf on the top of technology. The Falcam also has screw holes if you don't want to use the quick release. They are found on the side and top.
The accessories are also compatible with the Smallrig cages too. Now, I'm off to sleep ;)
For the F22 side handle, do you also need a Cold shoe or hot shoe to clip on a mic?
Hi, thanks for another informative video. A question, how did you solve the lack of micro HDMI clamp? I mean, Smallrig and Tilta cages have one, but Falcam doesn't. Have you found any solution for that?
I didn't think any cage for the R5 on the market was actually good or fit my needs so I made my own haha! Video coming out shortly...
Seems like a lot of work.
@@OrdinaryFilmmaker a little hard work sometimes pays off haha! czcams.com/video/GPL6MV11ehw/video.html
Well done. I love the ingenuity. You should reach out to Ulanzi and see if they need another engineer ;)
