Well. Looks like a 3-engined SM.79 with 1 engine out is in a better position to make it home than a 2-engined He-111 with 1 engine out. Which I guess is to be expected. An SM.79 with 2 engines has 400 more horsepower than a He-111 with 1 engine.

The tri-motored formula was a wise choice for most of the Italian medium bombers. In the thirties it´was a winning formula but they were outclassed by the start of ww2. Their problem was the lack of power of the engines but not only. These savoias were excellent types but no more than civilian airliners converted to bombers as much as the He 111 and the Dornier D17. In fact the 177 Greiff was the single Heinkel bomber born for that purpose of a heavy military aircraft.
After years reading about the Luftwaffe i simple can´t understand how men like Sperrle or Kesserling thougth that a strategic offensive over Britain could be carried out with a fleet of ill defended medium bombers.
The Ju 88, though excellent, was available in small numbers, and the 109 could barerly reach London. Extra fuel tanks were available but their were rejected by the pilots after the 110s disaster when they escorted a force of JU 88 s coming from the north cape. A single bullet and the 110s extra tank simply exploded, as they had no internal sealing rubber. A nephew of Goering died in that battle, flying a 110.
      Cheers!

      @@LeopardIL2 : Good comment, I agree.
The main Luftwaffe bomber in 1940 was the Heinkel He-111. And it was best suited for strategic bombing of the UK at night, not in daylight.
Instead of fighting the Battle of Britain in daylight in 1940, the Luftwaffe should have concentrated on bombing British ports at night. Wrecking those port facilities through repeated massive bombing would have made it very difficult for merchant ships reaching the UK to be unloaded in a timely manner.
This would have been a great way of supporting the U-boat campaign. If you fail to sink the cargo before it reaches Britain, then stop it from being unloaded when it gets there.
Britain had very few dedicated night fighters in 1940. Hurricanes and Spitfires were pretty much useless at night, their pilots weren't trained to fly at night.

It had its upsides but it was a bit old fashioned. In the war memoirs of Spike Milligan, who was assigned to North Africa in 1942, his convoy was attacked by SM 79s all of which were shot down or failed to score a hit. He said "it didn't feel fair, it was like shooting at grandmothers." lol

Yeah, the SM.79 was originally going to be an 8 passenger fast passenger craft, butt he Italian gvt snagged it to be fastest medium bomber,, which it was throughout the 1930s, relying on speed to not need a fighter escort in Spain.
The other thing with the take off, I have old photos from the desert campaign of Italian ground crew sitting on each wing to guide aircraft, they'd jump off before take off, obvs, but you proved why they did that at the start.

No, that is only because the Luftwaffe was legendary, making the Regia Aeronautica seem useless, but they did perform well in the Mediterranean and Africa. The British lost more than a hundred ships in the Med and had to commit many more instead of sending them to the Atlantic, and the Regia Marina was responsible for tying a lot of them down.
Besides, the hunchback, freccia and saetta were interwar planes, and were world-leading at the time of their introduction

    • @Heylanda-fb9xb
      @Heylanda-fb9xb Před rokem

@@charlesc.9012 Nah. Regia Aeronautica is as as useless as history made out to be.
They failed to accomplish anything to support the Axis war effort.
Even the Luftwaffe officers and pilot said that they would rather hang themselves than being escort by the Italian due to how incompetent they are.
Just look at how they fare with the mission in the video, the bombing of Malta, in real life.
Before Luftwaffe joined the raid, not a single Airfield, ports and docks ever being put out of action. And they lost several bombers/fighters TO A BRITISH BIPLANES! The 3 Gloster Gladiators defending the Island.
Later on, RA would also get itself gangbanged by the reinforced Hurricane and Spitfire send to improve Malta defenses.
The island would never suffer serious damage from the bombing raid until January 1941, when the Luftwaffe join the raid and show the Italian how to bomb shit.
