Soapmaking Advice: Don't Overbuy Fragrance Oils & Essential Oils

  • Filmed December 2017. Here I show you my fragrance oil and essential oil collection and tell what I learned about what customers do not want for fragrance in SOAP. At this point in time I was confronting my situation and looking for ideas about what to do going forward with my skincare and soapmaking business and how I could possibly turn these products into sellable product. My decision was to begin to make wax melts home fragrance, they are a flame-less way to scent the home, wax is warmed in a wax melter and the home is fragranced without flame.

    You can’t buy for your business like you’d buy for your hobby. You really need to have a plan in mind for your target market.

    Well these are creative tools none the less. BTW you have a couple thousand dollars in those drawers 😳. I find candle making is easier than soap making but I’d love to get back to soap making. Also, you can create scented room sprays, red diffusers, and fragrance you own home made cleaners. For example, make a hard surface cleaner from liquid potassium soap, a little borax and add some lavender oil. If it doesn’t dissolve you can use dipropylene glycol to get the fragrance to mix.

    I can't really stand most fragrances to begin with. I bought several samples and hated all of them except for one lilac one that is spot on with true lilac scent lol... something about the off/chemical perfumy scents of them repulses me and I feel like I'm probably not alone. I think many people dislike it when you can tell something smells like a synthetic version of what it should... or maybe I just got traumatized because I have super sensitive skin and as a child perfumy soaps would give me rashes or itching etc.
    Essential oils are very tricky to master but well worth it! Still you need to always be mindful of the strength of some of them. A HINT of pine might be lovely, but only a few drops too many and your soap quickly becomes ''a bit much''.

    There are body safe fragrance oils and there are fragrance oils that are for CANDLE USE ONLY. You can use body safe fragrance oils in candles but you can not use fragrance oils that are labeled for CANDLE USE ONLY in bath and body products. You have to be aware of these things before you go in business because if you use the wrong fragrance oil in a body product and sell it, that's not good.
    Go through your fragrances. READ YOUR LABELS... It will tell you what's body safe and what's NOT body safe. Separate the ones that are body safe from those that are for candles use ONLY. Those that are body safe, you can make your own fragrance blends and come up with your own custom scents but first, you'd have to educate yourself on fragrance blending.

    Great advice. I think we get anxious in wanting to please a great number of people. I’m new to the soaping business and don’t want to overspend. I did make the mistake in purchasing fragrance oils really for candles and than had not research enough about scenting my soaps. I learned it would be best not to use fragrance oils in my soap recipes because what would kinda defy the point to produce an all natural product without using essential oil for scent and it’s benefit. I’m still learning about essential oils and how to incorporate them properly in my soaps. I thank you for your transparency to help others who are enjoying the art and learning how to make use of the advice and suggestions of our veteran soap makers.

    I also, started over buying on my fragrance/essential oils. But I was cheap about it and only bought the 2oz or 4oz bottles. So now I have too many and I tried to come up with ways to use them. I researched a lot of things because right now, I do not have time to make candles too. Here are some things I am now using my scents for. I use the fruity ones for soaps or lotions marketed toward children. I have many customers who buy blue raspberry or bubble gum (or even monkey farts) for their children in my soap cubes. I use the bakery smelling ones for holiday times and make soap and lotion combo sets. I have set fragrances aside to also make per season (such as flowers in the spring, apples or pumpkins in the fall, etc) And to move the fragrances out that don't sell well or don't work well with soap, I watched videos on how to make perfume oils in roll on bottles using these scents. I like to be a mad scientist or alchemist at the end of a soap making day. Trying to figure out how to mesh scents into something that I may wear or like to smell and then, when some scent combo actually works and remains stable, I bottle it and list it for sale! Then I write down the recipe (how many drops of each scent and how much carrier oil) and remove any empty bottles from my inventory list so I don't order THAT again! It's a great way for me (anyway) to rewind and relax as I experiment with scents.

    • @amberbeltran9450
      @amberbeltran9450 Před 4 lety +2

      Hi Akit! When purchasing fragrance oils for use in soap, it's important to look at each individual fragrance's IFRA information (every good supplier should have this info readily available to you). There are different categories for which the IFRA deems a fragrance oil safe/appropriate for use in different mediums (ie: soap, lotion, body sprays, candles, etc), and at what maximum rate (not to exceed). The category for soap is IFRA Category 9. Generally, when purchasing fragrances for use in soap, you want to make sure that the IFRA maximum usage rate for Category 9 is at least 3% to 5%, and/or at least high enough to produce fragrant results in your product. For example, common usage rates for fragrance oils in Melt & Pour soap making is around 3%, so when making Melt & Pour soap, you would generally look for fragrances with an IFRA usage rate of 3% or higher for Category 9. Common usage rates for Cold Process soapmaking is around 5 to 6% per pound of oils, so in that medium, you'd look for fragrances that have an IFRA maximum usage rate of 5% or higher for Cat. 9. Can a fragrance oil be just as fragrant in application at lower usage rates? Certainly! But that's where individual testing comes into play, and as a general guideline, most soap makers prefer these common usage rates because they've been favored to produce fragrant results in one's products (too low of a usage rate can result in a product that has little to no scent, and too high of a usage rate, regardless of IFRA maximum, can be a waste of money if the standard amount already produces fragrant results. It can even result in an unsaponified pile of "goo" if used at TOO high of an amount, since fragrance oils are unsaponifiables- meaning, they don't saponify). A lower IFRA usage rate does not mean the fragrance oil is more potent, just as a higher IFRA usage rate does not mean that the fragrance is more diluted or weak. It's all about testing, testing and more testing, and making sure the fragrance oil you're using in your product does not exceed the IFRA maximum usage rate for which you are using it. Hope this helps & good luck on your soapmaking journey! Facebook groups for new crafters are especially helpful! My favorite is the "Candle And Bath & Body Making For Beginners" group by Nature's Fragrance. I might be biased because I'm a moderator of the group, but it really is a wonderful group of fellow crafters who can answer your questions & help you along the way! Happy crafting!😊

    Omg that sucks 😱 I can't talk much because I have a similar problem with glitter, though I'm just creating diy projects for my home, I bought unnecessary glitter colors trying to find the perfect shades.. I'm assuming you did the same with fragrance oils 😆😂🤣 but you can always find other projects to possibly use these oils with, for example liquid soaps which normally should always be scented with something, bath salts also normally come scented a majority of the time, maybe even bath milks, hand sanitizers too.. My thing is with these products is that normally most soaps are scented, if you don't want a scented soap then don't buy a scented soap 😆 that truly doesn't make any sense why people are purchasing scented soaps and then saying that they'd rather have an unscented soap 😳 That's odd.. In my case I always like to have y scent to my soaps because it's like aroma therapy every time I take a shower or wash my hands. To each their own, but people really if you want unscented soap make sure to buy unscented soap FYI 👍🏼
