    That is so interesting that they make a Bluetooth module to make these changes when these are some of the changes I made previously and was told these changed voided my warranty. I had to buy a replacement unit after it was determined that my motor burned out. They blamed changing the start gear from 3 to 4 is what burned out my motor. Here is the quote from email "no where in our manual do we recommended or encourage users to change the starting gear of their unit. By bypassing 1st gear to automatically start in 4th gear is like using a manual car in 3rd gear and never starting in fourth. Our warranty covers normal use not customization to the motor that have appeared and clearly demonstrated that it has over heated your motor on several uses and caused damage over the 80 plus dives as you published on the group discussion." Oh, and the group discussion mentioned was their Facebook group which I was banned from after posting the email.

    Great video. I almost bought a DiveX scooter. After comparing "Long Range" Scooters I went with the Genesis which was much more expensive and considered to be a military scooter. However for the dollars you can't beat the DiveX.

    Nice new features for the Dive-X Blacktip.
    I'm grateful for the infinite variable speed control (just move my thumb) on my Dive Logic Genesis 600. No "speeds" or "gears" to worry about. Just dial in the thrust I need/want. It's fun to aim into a current and match the force, so I hover motionless in the same point.
    And for entanglements (read: kelp), I can simply pull the magnetically coupled prop off, pull the entanglement out of the shroud and pop the prop back on. Ready to go.

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Před 7 měsíci +1

      That's exactly why I have a thumbscrew for my prop. Honestly, I've had that in mind since I saw the Genesis.

    Can any of these new features be applied to older BT's or is the hardware different? I am guessing it is.

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Před 7 měsíci +1

      You're correct. The new vesc board with bluetooth is different and the software hasn't been tested on the original scooters. It is possible to swap to the new board, but it's fairly intense DIY stuff.

    would it be worth waiting to buy one or could you buy a current one and upgrade the software later?

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Před 7 měsíci +1

      I would wait. It's really handy to be able to dial all this stuff in with your phone. You shouldn't have to wait very long though. Hopefully DIveX will have more details very soon on when these newer models start shipping. When I find out, I'll reply here.

    Is it possible to upgrade an older scooter to this software

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Před 7 měsíci +1

      The short answer is no. However, if you're comfortable with DIY stuff, you could swap your board for the new vesc controller. As long as it's not one of the original "potted" blacktips (like my original scooter). There are also plenty of people out there modifying the firmware and adding a lot of these features. Here's a scubaboard thread where people are discussing firmware modifications: scubaboard.com/community/threads/blacktip-firmware-modifications.609780/

    No cruise control? No thank you.
    Bluetooth sounds cool. But, I loaded the bwoodill firmware on my BlackTip a long time ago, set the firmware settings and tweaked over the course of 2 or 3 dives, and haven’t changed them (or wanted to) since. So, Bluetooth doesn’t seem like it really adds much practical value.
    Free custom firmware gives cruise control, jump speed, and reverse already. Factory firmware with no cruise control is firmware that would be replaced immediately (by me, anyway).
    What I was hoping for in a BlackTip update was any of the following: Less expensive. A way to charge it without opening the hull. Battery packs QC’d (and warrantied) by Dive-X (with more capacity). New tubes that would accept the newer 15Ah batteries.
    Oh, well. If the price hasn’t gone up, then they are still the best option for a scooter under $8K.

    • @DiveVibe
      @DiveVibe  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Yeah, I dunno if I'd run out and buy a new blacktip if I already had one. In fact, I know I wouldn't. For the new customers is gonna be nice though. You might find next weeks video interesting, there's a little more to talk about with the new version.

    • @Aaronatevergreen
      @Aaronatevergreen Před 7 měsíci

      Do you use 12ah batteries right now? I use mine for some pretty long distance, long duration scooter dives without draining them down too far.
      The biggest advantage of the power tool batteries over an integrated battery pack is the ability to quick change. If I’m diving my Suex, I have to choose between a second dive with a short filled battery or sitting out with my scooter on the charger for 13 hours.
      A Blacktip tube for the 15s would be totally doable, but the trade off is going to be more ballast weight and a heavier scooter overall. If you are bumping up against the run times on a single dive the JS aftermarket battery packs are a pretty cool option that boosts the BlackTip range into the stratosphere.

      @@Aaronatevergreen PTBs are a strength (maybe) and a weakness.
      I use Dewalt 12s. I have never run them all the way to empty in one day of diving. Of course, that is partly for the same reason I've never run my scuba tank completely down to empty - because I plan my dives including reserves, so I don't run out (of air or battery).
      But, honestly, there's really only 1 dive I have held off on doing because the BlackTip might not have enough range. So, generally speaking, the 12s are enough that I mostly don't need more battery capacity in my BlackTip.
      Which then begs the question: If you have enough battery that you don't need to change them during the day, is there actually any benefit to being able to change them out quickly? To me, there is not. And if I don't have any need to swap batteries during the day, then I'd rather not have to open the hull at all - not even to charge. So, at that point, the PTBs are now a negative, not a positive.
      The PTBs have another, even bigger negative, too. Even if you use Dewalt, buy brand new at the same time, only use them in your BlackTip, always use them together and charge them together, etc.., they can still "wear" at different rates. That results in them having different voltages while you are using them - especially when you are running the scooter hard. And then the scooter just shuts off due to a voltage imbalance. It's happened to me several times. It's happened to friends of mine. We have all done everything exactly per the manual, as far as buying and maintaining the batteries. But, there is nobody doing Quality Control on the PTBs to ensure they are suitable for use in a DPV. And nobody taking responsibility for it when they don't work right.
      A custom battery pack will give more range and, maybe more importantly, gives reliability that the PTBs don't. A custom pack will have a BMS (battery management system) and will not give a voltage imbalance like the PTBs do.

      @@Aaronatevergreen Also, I don't know what's up with your Suex, but if my Genesis is at 50%, it still has more range than a BlackTip with 2 x Dewalt 12s. And, it will charge from 50% to 80% during my surface interval. It takes 6 or 7 hours to go from 20% to 100%, but that's only because that last 10% takes 2 or 3 hours just by itself.
