Hi! I’m Craig Blundell and I’m delighted beatit.tv have come along and asked me to do a rig walkthrough for you. I’m currently on the Steve Hackett ’Genesis Revisited’ tour. I came straight off the Steven Wilson tour for 18 months. We needed a new rig, different sounds, different tones and this was basically sketched in a hotel room in Norway last year when I first got the gig. We decided that I can’t use the Steven Wilson rig. This was devised on two pieces of paper, I sent it over to Mapex and four months later it’s here on stage and it’s a thing of beauty.
I’m using two kicks. It’s back to the Chester Thompson days. He’s one of my heroes and an amazing drummer. Two kicks is a new thing for me since I was like 14 so that’s pretty interesting. Toms wise, this is a Mapex Versatus. I was pretty heavily involved with this kit from the very beginning. They only have ten artists worldwide and I’m the only British guy, which is really exciting. I’ve gone for 8”, 10”, 12”, 13”, 16”, 18” with an 18” auxiliary drum as a gong and two 22” kicks. Having that kick setup’s taken a bit of getting used to but I’m pretty much there now.
Snares wise I’m using a Mapex Wraith. It has the bark and the bite all you want but it’s controllable. It’s not one of those metal snares that’s gonna take your face off. For the last Steven Wilson tour they made me a 12” x 5” custom Saturn V Tour, but they made a one-ff snare drum for me. It sounds amazing, a real popper. It’s really, really nice. And I’ve got a Hi-Energy head on that one, Super Kicks on the kick. I’m using Aquarian Force 10s on top and Classic Clears on the bottom. I’ve been with Aquarian forever so head wise it’s been an easy choice for me. They last forever so my tech’s happy as well.
I’ve got two single Mapex Falcon pedals, a single Falcon hi hat and two BOSS FS-5U pedals - the left side for the click, the right side is for all sounds off.
My signature stick with Vater was 7A and that’s what I did the first leg of the Steven Wilson tour with. Then, I found myself playing a bit harder and breaking more sticks, which is not a boast. Nobody wants to break stuff. So I went to 5A, 5B, and now I ended up on the last tour with the fat back 3A.
I spoke to Paiste about trying to recreate Phil’s old cymbals. We’ve gone for 2002 Big Beats and I’ve gone for 602 Modern Essentials - quite thin, but I was trying to sound like the record. I use four crashes on the gig, starting with a 21” 2002 Big Beat, a 20” 602 Modern Essentials, a 22” 602 Modern Essentials, and a 24” Big Beat, which is just a beautiful cymbal. I came off the last tour using 2002s, which are a little bit more aggressive, so I decided to pull it back a little bit and go for something less bity and something a little bit more warm. I’m using a 24” 602 Modern Essentials ride. Never used a 24’ ride before. It doesn’t feel like a 24”. It has all the body and the soul, but the attack of a smaller cymbal and a rich tone of a big cymbal. The other ride a 20” 602 Medium Flat Ride. It’a absolutely beautiful! I never thought I’d use one, but they sound fantastic. Then, I’ve got all the bells and whistles for the ’Epping Forest’ track, where there’s loads of little bells and sprinkles. I’ve got two accent cup chimes, a mega bell, which doubles up as a hat, which is cool. An 8” Modern Essentials Splash, a 10” Modern Essentials Splash, a PSTX 10 with a Flanger Stack. I was really torn with hi hats. I was trying to find something really warm, dark, but with attack. It is quite difficult and you don’t know until you’re on the gig or at rehearsals. We went for the 14” Modern Essentials and it’s absolutely THE perfect sound for me. - Hudba
The aforementioned drum tech John gave my son a pair of Craig's sticks at the Chicago show. He was so nice! A Steve Hackett show is something to behold. The whole atmosphere is super cool and friendly. The show is amazing and can't wait till he's back in Chi-town this year.
Craig is not only a damn fine player, and amazing educator, he's also one of the nicest and most enthusiastic drummers I've ever met. I've been lucky enough to meet him a few times and he always makes time to stop and chat, be it drums, music, or just whatever's happening at the time. If you get him talking about Roland his eyes light up like a kid at Christmas; it's endearing and so refreshing to see a drummer who is genuinely passionate about the craft of the equipment he plays.
Plus, this kit is bad ass!
Steve Hackett sets the bar so high, you have to be on the top of your craft to be invited to be part of his band. Craig is a worthy successor to Gary and co.
Craig is a beast, an absolute treasure to see live. I saw both the Steve Wilson and Steve Hackett tours he supported and of course I 😢was blown away.
Craig is such a gent, and a beast of a drummer. So happy for him and all the nice, world class drum chairs he gets.
I've heard Craig play but never seen him interviewed. He comes across a very kind man. I love his playing with Hackett.
Just saw the Strve Hackett tour stop in Washington, D.C. last night, at the +/-1,900 seat, beautiful Warner Theater (nearly 100 years old!)..
I turned and said look how quick and strong Craig Blundell is, as a drummer!
Simply put, he smoked it.
Superb evening by the entire band!
A nearly three hour show!❤
He's a fabulous player, he's also an incredible innovator, he really has embraced technology and uses it to great effect. And an absolute gent as well 👏
This guy is the best! Crazy passion, knowledge, chops, imagination, and such a cool ass dude. I would love to chat with him!
Nice guy, incredible drummer and he knows his drum hardware!
Such a nice person and an incredible drummer.
I’ve had the privilege of seeing Craig play with Steven Wilson about five times now. He’s an extraordinary musician but more importantly, he’s a standup guy. Class. Thanks for tour of the rig!
Saw the show in Milwaukee October 4. Had never seen or heard Craig before. He is a beast. Talking to a woman in seat in front of me before the show. She said, “We think he is Rush’s next drummer.” Lol. He could definitely do it. What a master!
I was in the 7th row. Pabst.
Row CC for us, 3rd row.
Caught Craig on the last Steven Wilson tour and he was just killing it! Seems like a cool dude as well.
Craig how many cymbals do you want? Craig - Yes!
Actually, I believe Selling England By The Pound was recorded in August of 1973, which was about 2 years before Phil Collins joined Brand X. I'm looking forward to hearing Craig's fabulous rig live in Toronto. He's obviously an incredibly talented drummer and clearly a humble and passionate guy as well.
You can say anything in a public school accent ,,,
Not only is it an amazing rig, but it’s beautiful too. Love the wood finish. Craig is an amazing drummer and I’m a huge fan.
Any HACKETT fans who want to chat in the bar in HALIFAX ,,,hope I get a natter with you
That kit is pretty sweet. Like the custom pieces and mounts!
Just got home from the Detroit show... just fantastic! Kit sounded amazing and the cymbal section was spot on! Sat six rows in front of you, such speed and precision in your playing. Thanks for a great show from all of the band.
excellent drummer
Brilliant drummer and a pretty cool guy too!
Craig knows what he is talking about, a real pro 👍
love your work!!
Craig your are an inspiration as always fabulous show 🎶👍😎
Lovely guy and a world class drummer.
That’s a beautiful kit
Wow saw Craig on tour last night in Halifax with Steve Hackett an amazing experience.
Superb. I can’t wait to see you guys on Nov 5th at Sheffield.
Fooking Brilliant. That's really it. You are amazing. Thank you!!!!!!!!! ;)
A-A-AMAZING!
that suspension system really knocked me out!
Craig , excelente batera, muito bom. Congratulations. Angra dos Reis, RJ 🇧🇷.
Awesome mapex set . Great choice of cymbals paiste
A class act. Cool guy.
Whelp I guess we have Craig to blame when his kit gains sentience and leads the robo uprising..... I kid I kid, he's a amazing drummer and good person all around.
We'll see you on september 21 in Montreal
A shout out to Craig's tech, "French" John Galliard.
Hell mate, isn't it time you got a 9 to 5? LOL
All the best, Rob
Interesting and informative tour of the kit! Saw Craig play on the Steve Hackett tour at Hammersmith in November - awesome drummer! Played brilliantly on the Genesis/Hackett songs but his drum solo was outstanding - best solo I've ever seen live!!
Was Steve touring during covid19?
@@SDsailor7 Steve was in London November 2019, just before Covid; his next tour was postponed during Covid but he rescheduled this and I saw him again in September 2021. Fabulous as always!!
@@jkirk3043 But this was over in Europe right? He has not toured the U.S yet.
@@jkirk3043 Ah I see. Now I understand.
I am looking forward to seeing him perform the seconds out album when he comes to USA.
Did he do that over there?
Thank you
@@SDsailor7 Yes, I saw him in London. He did the whole of Seconds Out album plus a few extras! It was superb. Hope you get to see him - you will love it!!
I saw this tour a few weeks ago. What a show. Amazing.
The Dteve Hackett Genesisrevisited tour?
I thought he was not touring due to the covid19 pandemic?
@@SDsailor7 This tour was late 2019. The 2020 tour got rescheduled for 2021. I saw that a couple of months ago. Another outstanding show.
@@stevegardiner8473 So you are saying that they played during the pandemic?
Because we were already in lockdown in late 2019
@@stevegardiner8473 So in 2021 the tour was back on? Is that what you are saying?
I got to check if they came to my area then.
Or did they only toured in europe?
@@SDsailor7 Yes, I saw the 'Seconds Out' tour in the UK in September. The band is now in Scandinavia. More dates for Europe, Canada and USA for 2022.
Craig, enjoyed seeing you with Steve in Oakland last May. Spectacular...!!
We need to hear the kit
GRANDE BATTERISTA....
how do you protect your ears for a 2h show ?
would be great, to have heard what it sounds like ....
Mapex are an underrated drum company, the sound of their top range drums easily keeps up with most far Eastern drum companies, I just wish they would stop following the trend of shall short stack tom toms ,
Keep your toms nice and deep , I have been a mapex player for a good 12 years, I wish they would come out with an acyrilic kit .their hardware is shit hot to.
Why there's a lot of Ride Cymbals?
So my friend i agree all this ,you know i agree all what you are doing….. Romain
He was a good footballer as well
Did Steve Hackett play in Norway last year?
...not a drummer however this was fascinating!
AND creating the original sounds..Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. Lots of American trolls..People who know, brother...love you.
see you next year mate in Australia
Me too, and the other four of us in the band.
@@entangledbandaustralia6671 seen you there last time ask you if you are as good as tony banks lol
@@giggabyt78 I remember. I forget which part of Aus you are in though. Our next show is in Melbourne in November. Adelaide, Bris and maybe Sydney will have to wait until next year.
@@entangledbandaustralia6671 well i'm in tas
@@giggabyt78 Come on over then...how much is the flight?
Microphones??
Bullshit on the down thumbs Craig..you are spot on brother!
Mapex makes great drums at a great price. Goooo Mapex.
Well crap, isn’t this a very nice and like able guy!
1:06 actually that's not true. Selling England by the Pound was released in 1973 and Phil Collins didn't join Brand X until 1975.
Selling England is a Genesis song and Phil joined in 1970. He is credited as the drummer on that album on the liner notes also.
*album, not song
@@drummerdan95 Yes I know all that. I was referring to what Craig says about how Collins had "just come out the Brand X days" when they made Selling England by the Pound. That's not true, as he didn't join Brand X until 2 years after Selling England was released.
Hope his tech is on a decent wage!
Must be nice to be able to say "New band, new rig". But 'Brand X' was 3-5 years after 'Selling England'.
Heard someone bitching about new drummer ,,,is he all show???
Phil Collins would be proud off you
the throne stage wobbled.
A15 minute vid about a drum kit without ever actually letting us hear it?
You can never have too many drums and cymbals lol
4 months? Fuuuuuuuuuuuck that.
Not enough drumms when you are covering Genesis material.
