    ► freethoughtblog...
CZcams comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of CZcams comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

Paul is basically saying that atheists should be the ones responsible to dispel the irrational ill-informed prejudices that theists hold due to ignorance or laziness

George: “...my world is different from yours...”
By 57:00 I would have said, “I’m sorry George, you’re just too damn stupid to have a conversation with.”
      And walk away...or hang up.
But seriously, this type scares me...you know, “... but only religion can make good people do bad things.”

George sounds like a guy from an earlier show who complained that some of the youngsters in his (church?) were listening to the Atheist Experience and that he wasn't happy about it. Matt believed he wasn't for real and hung up on him.

George is a prime example of the crippling effects of religious indoctrination on logical and critical thinking. Every time he calls it's excruciatingly painful.

Paul, like most religious apologists, doesn’t understand as much as he believes he understands. He wanted to ask a convoluted question instead of coming right out and asking whether objective morality exists.
And not all atheists are humanists either.

"most people, when meeting an atheist, would prefer..." most people, eh? Citation please. Or are you just doing the "I'm gonna project my view onto 'most people'. Then use argument from popularity to 'prove' I'm right."
When I meet someone for the first time, *I* would prefer that they weren't the type who'd assume that "atheist" means "I'd save a puppy, not your baby. Yes. I /am/ a monster."

~ Matt and Tracie hooray five-six years later: Often you all at TAE make the argument for being an atheist, simply by letting theists talk, and theists expose themselves for being just awful human beings with the words that come out of their mouths. Cheers, DAVEDJ ~

The "atheist" (or just rational) solution? Save both. Carry the kid. A dog (even most puppies) can get itself out as long as you clear the way. Lift it outta the box, open the door or do the thing requiring human parts.
Atheism. Finding better solutions by not accepting arbitrary, illogical, top-down pronouncements like "you can only save one".

Way past tired of fools claiming a stance is "agnosticism". Everyone is agnostic, because no one knows if there is a god or not. And no one WILL know without this supposed god providing evidence, since there is no definitive evidence in existence at this point in time.

  • @brucebaker810
    @brucebaker810 Před 5 lety +4

Re the callers misapprehension about rescuing the "most evolved" creature...
The tendency would, generally, be to protect the thing that is most closely related to you.
Make the scenario, not a kid and a dog, but two kids. "Equally evolved". And, in the silly set circs of the scene, the brave hero can Only Save One!
IF one were her child and the other a stranger...?
Not her child, but her neice. Or cousin...?
Not related by blood, but a friend (vs a stranger)...? Or the relative of a friend.
It comes down to "how closely related". Not "how much evolved".
Also irritating :the assumption that atheist = Vulcan or similar.

I love. Matt but, The issue of hard atheism vs soft atheism is just semantics to me. Why be agnostic/soft atheism regarding the biblical god? We’re not agnostic about Zeus, Santa Claus, tooth fairy and hundreds of other mythical gods. This god has exactly the same attributes, and yet we hold back. I can state with a high degree of confidence that he does not exist just like we all do with the other imaginary gods. Let’s finally grow a pair and label it accordingly.

Because he is smart enough to recognize that by keeping the burden of proof on the theists we can avoid them using the #1 tactic in their book - being slimy little weasels that deflect by projecting everything back onto us. Being surrounded by conservative Mormons, I can confidently say his approach has hands down been the most successful for me. It’s not about growing a pair, it’s about actually reaching people.
