    To think that an engineer thought of the best way to clear the jump and has become an eternal technique in high jump is legendary.

      That would mean that you jump with a force of 1.2 mega Newton's if you ran as fast as Usain bolt on top speed. Which is pretty decent

  • @thethirdman225
    @thethirdman225 Před 8 lety +26

    Fuzz, I think you just became my hero. So many other videos talk on and on about bar clearance but if you haven't got the height, I don't care what you do over the bar, you're not going to make it. I spent 15 years coaching high jumpers and I have always been able to tell three strides out whether a person will make it or not.

    • @lease2coach170
      @lease2coach170 Před 7 lety +1

      I can't honestly say "always"--but certainly >90% of the time, I could tell whether someone would clear the bar well before s/he ever left the ground.
      I think a key is that the jumper *stay in the curve* on those last few steps. As the bar goes up, it's very tempting to try to do "something special" to get more height...and that often means that the athlete steps out of the curved approach that s/he ordinarily uses. Stepping out of the curve almost always produces a miss.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Před 7 lety

      lease2coach1 Yeah, that's pretty close. Probably your way of saying basically the same thing. Any variation in stride pattern is usually a confidence thing. Sometimes I can tell by the look on their face.

    • @lease2coach170
      @lease2coach170 Před 7 lety

      TheThirdMan "Sometimes I can tell by the look on their face." Great point!--sometimes if they've given up, you can see it.

    • @thethirdman225
      @thethirdman225 Před 7 lety

      lease2coach1 Yeah, that's it. If you saw the women's high jump in Rio, there was plenty of that. People have criticised the event because nobody jumped 2.00 metres but the conditions were a lot tougher than most people realise, with a slick surface which was drier on the left than on the right. It was a seriously ego-bruising competition. Those who held their nerve did well.
