I read that this was the last public performance of Beethoven where, of course, he was playing the piano. The performance had to stop as he could not keep pace with the other soloists. And, again, of course it was when his deafness had finally overcome him. Saying that, this piece has a special place in my heart. It expresses the character of Beethoven in every way. There is so much in this piece that just demands to be returned to again and again and again.

    What a delight!
This performance captures the very essence of chamber music, of its profound intimacy. Beethoven´s "Archduke" caresses both the ear and the soul. There is no drama, no conflicts, no sharp edges as in most of his other superb compositions, just wit, joy, musical poetry and celestial beauty. I am overwhelmed and thankful.

I don't believe I've been hiding under a rock for the last decade or two, yet I have not encountered this group of players until now. The cellist is the greatest cellist I'd not heard of, yet I don't intend that to detract from the quality of the playing of the other two performers or of the whole group. I experienced the performance as stunning, and I don't think any of the old favourites are superior (eg Beaux Arts). Because of the high quality of the recording, it will be my go to from now on. For me, it captures fully the innate beauty of this compositional masterpiece, which has been for many years one of my favourite pieces of all music. Unlike one previous commentator I tend to prefer live (and therefore unedited and integral) performances over studio versions.

I hold this to be one of the best clues to classical music, this theme Andante Cantabile at 20:05, a simple melody, or theme, that then developes into something so much more, leading to a deeper understanding of the initial thoughts of this work. For me it was a revelation when I the first time heard this musik IRL, long ago. And this fascination still is my companion.

This sounds very Schubert like to me, at least many parts of it.

The fact that Beethoven was a weak melodist shows here. The main theme starts off nicely. The first two lines are beautiful but after that Beethoven runs out of imagination to complete them. It descends into chaos. If only Mozart had lived long enough to hear this- he would have written a nice set of variations or rewritten the main melody.

I hate those trills, like at 0:20 . Beethoven was a second rate melodist. Those trills helped him cover up his lack of melodies

I am sorry, but I have to thoroughly disagree with you on that one. He may not have been the master of melody like Mozart, Schubert or Boccherini. But there is a spiritual dimension in the layout of his music which he worked tirelessly to achieve, and I believe he succeeded, to a level above any other composer. I also like the trills.

I don't think you understand the concept of melody. It can take many different forms. The melody you're referring is just one simple form and IMO, can be boring as the music goes on because it will repeat itself over and over. Beethoven's music never boring but Mozart's music can be. You know why now?

I love the trills. Beethoven was a master at form and all his music revolves around form including melody. He uses all elements of music masterfully to create form which is, after all, the most important thing in classical compositions. It’s what makes everything work hence why Beethoven’s music doesn’t rely on just one element to make it great. It uses them all to create the form of which he is second to none. Your lack of understanding is unfortunate but understandable based on your simple explanation as to why u think Beethoven was a poor melodist.
