While building my “console equivalent” PC for a previous video, I captured a lot of footage using ChimeraOS - an intriguing choice of operating system for anyone building a PC for the living room. Unfortunately, I ended up being forced to swap back to Windows for that video, but I decided to put this one together so that I could talk a little about my positive experience with Chimera, along with a few issues that came up.

If I recall correctly the Linux version of Davinci Resolve had issues working with AMD graphics cards, I do not know if it still is the case today, but I think that is why he said that in the video. (especially after he mentioned using an AMD card with the DIY console). I do, however use an Nvidia GPU and it does work very well.

@Splarkszter all hail KDEnlive! Hands down the best free video editor I’ve ever used! I don’t care about DaVinci Resolve, even if it’s “better” it crashed on me several times when trying to use it for the first time and was too confusing to figure out, couldn’t even figure out how to import a video clip, things like that are unforgivable and seals a programs fate for me.
But KDEnlive in the other hand, it worked right away no problem, is familiar and similar and actually “intuitive” (feels like that word gets thrown around a lot and misused, hey devs, it’s another word for “instinctual” or “natural” as in you can dive in and use a program how you expect it should be used) with an almost nonexistent learning curve and it’s so powerful even in its current state. If they could only add some feature that something like After Effects has had since version 7.0, which I still use from time to time on an old Windows 7 machine, like 3D layers, virtual lights and virtual cameras, I’d never need another video editor for as long as I live.
      All hail KDEnlive!

9:30 . Mesa (the driver that amd gpus use), received ray tracing support in it's new release about 5 days ago, so while the performance is horrid, it should be stable by the end of the year. Already playable with ray tracing, actually (just require extra steps, like installing bleeding edge Mesa and smth like "RADV_PERFTEST=rt VKD3D_CONFIG=dxr11" in game launch options), if you have some overpowered thing like 7900xtx. That being said, there a lot of work on performance side, cause Cyberpunk on "4k & ultra & overdrive RT & no upscaling" works at 5-6 fps on 7900xtx. That not linux problem tho, but say a lot about current hardware possibility's.

I've been a Linux only user for almost 6 years now and the amount of progress we've made when it comes to gaming is very amazing. I mean a couple of years ago we'd be lucky to get anything running at all, usually resorting to a windows vm with a gpu pass through. But now? Now we often get day one support even for major releases. The only reason some online games don't work, is because the devs refuse to add support. Many anti cheat solutions do support Linux, the devs just have to enable it for their game.

there's a package on the AUR that allows you to install the chimeraOS/steamOS interface on any arch based distro, and you can log into it from your session manager like any desktop environment. I have it installed on my laptop and it's amazing. so much more streamlined and optimized than just running big picture mode within my desktop environment, especially since I can only allocate a measly 2gb of vram to my laptop's igpu of which KDE takes up 25-50% of. I also think it's pretty stupid that the resolution setting doesn't default to "native" (and there's no setting to change it) so you have to manually change it for every game. @@IcebergTech I wanna add one thing, just for the record: such distros like Chimera usually dont have bleeding edge packages and focused on a specific things, like look&feel for example. So, performance and set of supported features (like RT in proton games for example) may be different across various linux distros.
I'm not promoting to use smth different, cause something like arch is annoyingly hard to install in the first place, and arch derivative like Manjaro have same problem with "old" packages (drivers\programs), just wanted to mention that, so you know.
That being said, I can run Cyberpunk with RT on my 7900xtx with zero problems, by adding "RADV_PERFTEST=rt" in launch options. Even turning on "overdrive" mode works like "destroy my framerate" button, exactly like on windows.

Using proton-GE also is the better choice, when using steam as it unlocks better performance, experimental is more cutting edge but typically not as good, for apps like lutris(for multiple lauchers and crack games xd), heroic(>epic and gog), wine-ge is the better option.

The whole fuss with Nvidia on Linux is a result of the fact that they have two set of drivers: proprietary closed-source drivers directly from Nvidia (which still tend to be worse than the Windows ones) that usually are not shipped as default on most distros and open-source noveau drivers that are hugely flawed (you would be lucky to just run games on them with more modern cards). On top of that there is much more troubleshooting required with issues like Wayland or hardware video acceleration even with proprietary drivers. That's one of the reasons why I upgraded to Radeon. The only advantage of Nvidia drivers in comparison to Radeon ones on Linux is that Nvidia has a GUI options menu, but in my opinion directly editing config files are the way to go.
