Gibson L1 Review
What 80 years ago was a cheap guitar is today mega expensive because no one makes a cheap little guitar. Robert Johnson if alive today would play a cheap import with some flash.
Was it cheap? I thought it was $50 which would be $800 today 11 years after this comment. $800 definitely isn’t 2 grand but still not cheap.
I played one of these in a shop years ago.....I really liked it.....the sound was thin but it was a blast to play....
I’ve got this model L1. Fantastic guitar. My grandfather had an original 1926 L1 he bought new. It was the first guitar I ever played.
I got the Robert Johnson signature model in 2005 from Musicians Friend when they were $2200.00 delivered to your door in the case. Couldnt believe it when I saw what they go for now if you can find one. Looks like the Japanese bought them all. It sounds ok but has gotten better with age. In my opinion it looks much better than it sounds. Still a very fun guitar though.
I appreciate you playing similar licks across your acoustic videos. I can now say, with great certainty, that the Gibson Keb Mo blues master sounds greatly like the Gibson L-1 with the L-1 being a touch throatier, possibly due to the thick/meatier neck and yes a bit boxier sounding. This guitar has the ebony bridge and I don't think Keb has that
I don't know if the mic needed to be lowered, but I never heard Tony review a guitar with such a response. Some of the bass notes overwhelmed the mic and sounded muffled.
Flat picking on this guitar is interesting. The sound doesn't deviate from the finger style sound. Almost as if nylon strings were on there.
That Gibson makes me want to go down south and play blues.
Gibson made a 'less expensive' model of the L-1 called the 'Kalamazoo.' It supposedly has a similar sound.
ever hear one its alot less let it season 50 years it sounds on but nothing to write home about
I ran into a Gene Autry Kalamazoo once. Could tell it was a Gibson by its neck, one of the reasons I play Gibsons.
How is it possible to play the blues on a 4k guitar?
@Timothy Lee Well it's a Gibson so they got that covered.
If that was your last money for food and rent.. Ans you bought a guitar. And now living under a bridge..
@Francis Joseph not true... a lot of the popular blues men of that time played some nice axes. They just weren’t 4K back then.
@Timothy Lee Gibson is overpriced. I have a 2,5k axe (Martin OM), but that's about as far I'll go. Anything above 3k for a guitar is crazy. Especially for musicians.
Robert Johnson Yeaaahhh
This guitar is beautiful and looks small like Little Martin or Taylor GS Mini.
A very beautiful guitar. Greetings from Panama :)
This guys last name is a fender electric guitar that Leo fender never had time to get to
after 2 years of watching his videos i still have not signed up for the acoustic letter XD
I just got one of these today with some cosmetic damage the the body. Great vid. Wanted more info on this guitar as a friend gave me this.
if i'm not mistaking, J. Buckley played such a guitar.
aye, was his favourite actually
Cristiano Bisignano I thought it was the fender telecaster ? that was his favourite ?
@@themajesticstick5262 find some acoustic songs by him... He was a beast
I bet that would sounds great even if I were to play it :D
I’d love to hear it with the mic just back towards the body 2 frets
I have to say of all the photos of Robert J .I never seen the head stock or a 1929 Gibson logo anywhere . Martin made something at that period that reflects Roberts Ax
There's only two pictures of him in existence. One clearly shows him holding a Gibson L1.The other you can only see the fretboard.
@@danielshevlin4159 The other one has been identified as a Kalamazoo KG-14... They were Gibson made guitars, but much cheaper. Clips of people playing them on CZcams sound uncannily close to Johnson's sound.
Wow! It really did come alive with the blues.
Robert Johnson FTW!
"you almost have to play the blues" you should've.
Even from the video, you can see glue spots on the head near the nut.
John Fahey at 2:30 !
For the price it's better to get a vintage L1 (or two).
i would sell my soul for that guitar.
tyler hurd careful what u wish for..
Wow! Sounds boxy, but that just made it surprise me all the more how robust it sounded strummed.
which song is the last one he played? PLEASE HELP ME
This guitars sounds quite tight if that's the right term not much sustain
I wish they had made it an archtop like the original. That would've been great, but I guess Gibson is out of the archtop business
Clacking Computer historically the L1 is a flat top guitar.
@@rohw0016 Necro lol, but it became a flat in '26,; before that it was arch
well im in love
they sound very close to an authentic 29.
i have one.arrived couple days ago. white button, but Kluson tuners... the kind you'd find of a LP special or somethin. doesnt have a fat neck at all... and i guess Gibson just slaps them together with various materials. because the specs on Gibson.com and elsewhere describe period correct pyramid bridge. this example doesn't have that, and nor does mine. specs also call an ebony fretboard... again not here. interesting bird indeed.
rav this is why I'm purchasing the original 1928 model. Reissues are a cry for help in my opinion. Plus the neck on the originals are much wider, & the sound feels less forced.
Nice guitar, does anyone know the name of the first piece he played? Want to learn that.
The Last Steam Engine Train by John Fahey
If you want to just here the dang thing: 2:33
economics. if more people actually played guitar and the blues, this guitar would be fairly cheap.
sounds crazy boxy.
whats the name of the first blues song he played.
Last Steam Engine Train
does anyone know the name of the 1st song on the demo.
A bit too late buddy, I know: it's the "Last Steam Engine Train" by John Fahey and/or Leo Kottke.
Jeff Buckley played a Gibson Nick Lucas reissue .....looked similar but different
no, it was an L1
are there any similar looking guitars?
This guitar is very similar to an L-00 model, which is also a Gibson classic design.
4 1/4" is deeper than some dreadnoughts? Did you mean 4 3/4"?
i'd like to hear the guitar, not the neck, put that mic over the sound board.
how much?
This particular guitar is no longer in stock. I might be able to find another for you. Please send me an email if you're interested. -Chad info@acousticletter.com
This would make a gorgeous guitar on the wall of a dentist or a lawyer.
what strings are you using?
I believe full steel as it is The same guitar model as Robert Johnson is mostly notorious of using. If not check the Gibson Website.
Gibson, through out, have that bass and crisp sound, this will get ripe, it's got the root.
Tell you what there ain't $6,500 worth of sound there. Same for the $2,000 dollar one or the Blues King.
Doesnt sound like a Robert Johnson
I don´t. hehe.
Robert Johnson did that
Mucho expensive...
Eh, doesn't sound great does it?
last steam engine train
Bye
Keb Mo has better sound than this...
Sorry Tony. Just no luv for these guitar at all. No more than I have for F Hole Archtop guitars like the Kalkamazoo F Hole Archtop guitar I was gifted in 1949.
Dad bought me a 1946 model. Appear at a bluegrass jam session with one o these guys and be snickered at? I'll stick with my ole C F dred.
They just wont re-issue a real LG-2 copy. X-braced, the real deal. L1 copy is no songwriters guitar, nothing like the LG-2. Sounds like poo, make an LG-2 Gibson.
no money to buy one anyways, don't care.
Stop begging. It makes it seem that what you offer isn't worth signing up for.
ROBERT JOHNSON WAS NOT PLAYING A MAHOGANY body GIBSON on any of his recordings. Do I know what he was playing? Yes.
+Larry N. Guy Would you tell us, pretty please?
Yaaaawwwwnnnnn . . .
+Chuck Hughes you know, I think I was partially wrong. the 29 L-1 is Mahogany on back and sides, with like a spruce top, and he probably used that on most of his songs in Standard tuning. Open E- Stella Birch, Open A , KG14--
Guitar sounds terrible... Except when you played the blues! That is when it shined. But the blues shouldn't ever be played on an expensive guitar. Just doesn't work.
Am I the only one that's tired of hearing him play the same thing over and over. I know that it's to compare guitars between each other, but still.
+AlxMars he threw in a few new licks on this one actually.
Is this guitar tuned by the devil???
Thejoke.jpg
too much blabla
was-stating-the-obvious.jpg
Uhmmmm. No.
how can you try out a l1 and not play some r.j. on it what the hell was that country bullshit
