      I just drove both hard in the canyons in CA. I still maintain the M2CS puts the power down better than the GT4 on back roads with better suspension compliance, more fun engine. Thank you very much for this video. Really enjoyed it. I do not however agree with the choice of the competitor out of the Porsche lineup for this comparison test. It should’ve been the 4.0 GTS. Here in the US, the M2CS with carbon ceramic brakes is $27,000 cheaper than the GT4 with the carbon ceramic brakes and a few other options. 4.0 GTS is spot on pricewise though.

    • @smilepermile8165
      @smilepermile8165 Před 3 lety

    • @timmietz
      @timmietz Před 3 lety +2

      @@smilepermile8165 that’s weird. I just ordered a PDK GT4 and nicely optioned it cam to $131K (including PCCBs). That’s almost $40K more than my M2CS that has all options except for the DCT.

    • @smilepermile8165
      @smilepermile8165 Před 3 lety

      @@timmietz Yes its very strange how certain markets price their cars completely differently from others. I'm not kidding- in the UK, the M2 CS begins from £72,600, whereas the 718 Cayman GT4 starts from £75,780. Thats why they compared the two cars together in this test. Obviously, the Porsche will come with expensive options though. It all depends on your priorities - if you want a car that's more practical (because you only have one parking space), then the M2 CS is the better compromise but if you want the car that is better dynamically as its based on an inherently superior midengined chassis, the 718 GT4 is the way to go.

    • @ajunta2270
      @ajunta2270 Před 2 lety +3

      @@smilepermile8165 You're totally right but I just want to add that the Porsche isn't better than the BMW just because it's based on an inherently superior platform. It has better damping as well as a better engine, too. If these were DCTs, the Porsche would win that contest as well.

    • @smilepermile8165
      @smilepermile8165 Před 2 lety +1

      @@ajunta2270 Oh yes for sure, I'm not saying that its solely on the mid engined layout that makes the Cayman superior to the 2 series based car. Suspension damping quality as you say, aerodynamics, throttle response, steering feel etc play their part too.

  • @888mf4

    Good review Dan. Agree that the steering wheel on the M2 CS is too chunky and that they should have kept the arm rests. However don't think it's fair to compare these two based on price. The M2 CS is not as good as a GT4 for lots of reasons, but its also not competing in that space. People buying the M2 CS need 4 seats and a boot, and even at £75000 there's not a lot of cars that offer a dynamic driving style at that price point. The M3, M3 and possibly M2 Competition are probably its biggest rivals. Remember that all M2 CS sold out, so there is big demand for this type of car. The only other car that has German build quality and 4 seats that comes to mind is the Mercedes C63S Coupe.

    I remember your review of the Giulia Quadrifoglio being one of the most, if not the most fun car to drive. How is it compared to the GT4? Would you rather take the Porsche or the Alfa when it comes to just pure fun? I know both cars cant be really compared to each other, but I am astonished about so many reviews claiming that the Giulia QV is one of the most fun driver cars - which to this point I thought was the Mid-Engine based GT4. What is your opinion Dan?

    Hey Dan, your EVO colleagues gave the CS the title of “car of the year”. Since you were a evo writer too, why do you think there is such a gap between reviews ? For you and others the cs is not that special, for most of evo crew it’s one of the best driver car lately. I think too that if someone loves driving precision and balance the 718 has more edge..they highlited also that tyres temperature can be a big factor on the cs, turning it in a very unpleasant car if cold. What do you guys think? Thanks

      @Timboo1971 Před 3 lety +2

      Have you driven a 2019/20 GT4? I think you'll find there's plenty of torque to eliminate the tall, track focused gearing. Even if the gearing was marginally shorter you would perhaps get one more gear change in, driving at nine tenths, before immediately blowing through the maximum speed laws in the UK (70mph)… I think the gearing issue is highlighting a much smaller fly in the ointment than it actually is and only focused on due to lack of other things to nit pick…

      @ApothecaryTerry Před 3 lety +2

      My 981S tops out at 75 in 2nd gear, it's really not an issue since they have plenty of torque and sound great at anything past 2k RPM. You can cruise around happily 6th in a manual or 7th in a PDK at about 45mph and only drop 1 gear to accelerate (not going to overtake without dropping to at least 3rd of course).

    As a long time bmw owner and fanatic, I can say that porsche has always been that bit better where it counts. Its not that porsche are trying to be better than the rest, its just that they are always trying to better than their previous model... which was the best. It makes me a little jealous to say that a great bmw is one that drives like a porsche...

    • @hazardeur
      @hazardeur Před 3 lety +6

      well, BMW always has the "burden" to be a bit more daily compatibel than a Porsche. While some can, most people won't daily a Porsche (2 seats, looks, cargo space, drive feeling) and Porsche knows that so they can concentrate more on being a sports car. BMW usually just needs to please a much more varied audience, even with the M line so of course they will have to sacrifice some of that sportyness. Most people I know with M cars just have that one car and no dedicated car for fun and daily. Given these facts, I think the M is as competitive as it gets. If Porsche had the same audience, they would make the same sacrifices I'm sure. Let's see somebody with kids, a regular job and daily duties but the need for a sporty car make the comparison/review. I'm sure the M will get picked most of the time.

    • @ApothecaryTerry
      @ApothecaryTerry Před 3 lety +1

      Porsche vs Yaris is a very different experience. Everyone who isn't a car person still knows what a Porsche is and is impressed (arguably more impressed than the cars deserve) whereas lots of people won't know what the Yaris is and it certainly won't draw the same kind of attention. I've "only" got a 981 Cayman S, admittedly in a flashy spec, but it's impossible to avoid attention. Also Porsches hold their value ridiculously well, which you have to consider when deciding if something is "worth" it, since the long term costs really aren't that high.
      That said, I am hugely excited by the Yaris, that thing looks like a load of fun and when Toyota get a car right they seem to absolutely nail it.

The GT4 is the car you go for on a weekend and drive the legs of it because it just feels totally wasted and uncomfortable driving around town so, if you have the money to have a car you drive only at the weekends then the GT4 is it, but if you want a car that is brilliant at everything it does then the M2CS is that car - I also think the extra money for the M2CS is worth it as I’ve never lost any money on the m2 and I lost loads in the GT4.
