Sir, I watched this 2 years ago; its priceless!! Want to Thank you for this information. When I took mine apart, all the guts went here and there; Had no plans of how to put it back till I remembered your video. Ended up having the I did have the same broken gear shaft but at very top. That dang spring clip gave me the business; finally after a day of thinking.; got it back together. Works good for now. I truly thank you much for this. aaron in Richland Hills, TX

Bro! You are a badass. I know this seems simple to you. I take soooo much pride in fixing things that's why I started a handyman business. I really thought you were going to say you didn't have a fix to the broken shaft. The wire fix was great. And I really like the part when you drilled inspection holes to watch the gears in action to see which one was not working. Great video. I believe if people would work on something till the very end they can fix 90% of things that are broken.
Tested the motor, capacitor and Fill sensor. Was almost ready to send my 1996 Kenmore away. But nope ... it was the timer and this was the video that showed me what to look for. She survives to wash another load. Good thing too ... I was running low on clean socks. Thanks Matt.

Dude this tutorial was sick! I've been learning how to do diy appliance repair for all the wrong reasons for the last couple years, and I've watched a thousand of these things. You sir are a real one, and these other repair guys could use some notes from you on creativity and critical thinking. True DIY: a little figuring, a little fabricating, and a little fixing. One of those steps goes wrong that just means you didn't spend enough time on the first step LOL. That pin idea was genius. Fortune favors the bold my friend. Keep on fixin. 🤘
Thanks, Matt for the effort and diligence to make this video. As a long-time laundry tech for Sears, I replaced a lot of these cheap plastic timers used in newer top load washers. They don't tend to last nearly as long as the older metal timers did. Sadly in an effort to save money, the newer machines engineers cut some corners which led to disposable appliances. My Whirlpool washer/dryer is 31 years old and may last another 10 years without abuse.

Yeah the 600 series ones are exactly the same. They are like $200 now. The washer itself though is 10x better than the junk they sell now though. New washers wont last as long as the old switch in mine did. lol
On my 80 series the points were burned from arcing and the timer needed to be replaced. Now $191 plus tax.

I had just replaced the dogs when the washer stalled on the first rinse/spin cycle. Totally unrelated problems it would seem. Lid switch bypassed a decade ago. Put power to the timer motor and it spun fine and turned the player piano bumps so that part is good. I'm about ready to file the points and put it back in. Thanks for the video! :-)

Thanks so much for the video!! Such diligence and patience in assessing and repairing your timer. Our Kenmore 80 series is so precious to me. We have replaced the clutch, leaky gear case, and I cleaned and painted the outside of the tub with appliance paint last year and it’s holding up super well. Having an issue right now where the washer spins fine after the wash cycle but will only drain but not spin after the rinse cycle until I turn the knob all the way around again and put on the final spin and it does the job. So it surely must be the timer. I will take it apart and see what I can figure out. I wouldn’t trade this K80S for a whole slew of the new, cheaply made/disposable machines. Many of the “not spinning” videos, though helpful, are in regards to the lid switch, clutch, or other issues and I was looking for one specifically that addressed the timer-spin problem. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video. Much appreciated.
I have the Kenmore 80 series also and will be doing point cleaning. Mine is getting one click after Rinse, then drains and spins one time, then it adds a little water and moves to off leaving water in bottom.

My timer gets stuck between cycles and can be restarted manually but your video is steering me in right direction. Thanks.
That sounds like burnt points. Maybe check with a meter.

Thank you! I was able to get mine working again. The only thing I did differently was using a screw through the hole I made. It prevented some slop, which was the only way to get that spring that pops off to stay in place for me. TO ANYONE ATTEMPTING THIS REPAIR, TAKE NOTE OF HOW THE SPRING IS ATTACHED BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE, TAKE PICTURES. It took me forever to figure out, but it was worth my time. The timer is a $200 or so part. The washer isn't even worth that, but it's wasteful to throw out an entire washer because of a tiny broken shaft.

Absolutely awesome tutorial man. I like to fix my own stuff when I can and I hate getting whooped. I went and watched another video showing how to clean the contact points. There were a few contacts that were charred up and I used a nail file, then put it all back together and it didn't help at all. I had to replace the motor coupling and that was cheap and easy to do but I saw the timer priced at 274.00 !! Heck I can get a another washer for that price. That's just obnoxiously too much. Then I saw your video about the gears and you gave me another plan of attack to try. I will pay attention to that white gear and see if it's bad on mine. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Your patience and knowledge are amazing. I thought maybe I could do this procedure myself, but your skill is so far over my head. Geez. I might be able to clean the points, but that gear thing was WOWZA! I'll keep posted on how far I get. UPDATE: Wow, my timer looks very different, I guess because my washer is 22 year old. No apparent way to access the points. DEADEND (sob) New part = $189.69 = OUCH

Thank you so much for this video I’m going to use this over the weekend on my washer. Question how and what did you use for the pen I only saw it coming out of the white piece? Also I believe mine is a timer as well because it will stop when it fills and then when I push it to spin or rinse then it will spin and resume so hopefully it is a timer again thank you so much

Great video man! Super informative. Im thinking the timer is the issue on my washer. My problem is that when i start my Kenmore 800 washer it starts to agitate before it begins to fill with water and then at the end of the final spin cycle it starts ti fill with water again. So I'm guessing the cycles are all screwed up. Any advice? Thanks!
My washer is not agitating during the wash cycle, but does agitate during the rinse cycle, so I'm guessing my problem is one of the switches in the timer. Thanks for showing me what I'm likely to find when I tear mine apart...tomorrow.

I found burnt contacts looks like on the ones that have something to do with the motor. If i am readibg the schematic correctly. Is there a test just for the motor?
Hi I wonder you could help me on my west point washing mechine front loading timer is stuck .when started after very long time purchased as not had a chance to use it until recently for the first time. I presume I need to change the motor belt took as its harden and damage at the contact of the motor. How can I fix on my own if possible if I send you the picture of it.Do you think if I spray the timer with an electrical contact spray will it help with the problem .?

My washer is identical to yours, so this video is so helpful. At the end when you show the washer running, i noticed your washer wasn't spinning during the "drain" phase of the spin cycle. My washer is doing this too. It used to start spinning at the same time it starts draining. I was told the issue may be the timer, which is how i came across this video. My washer works fine otherwise (it finally starts spinning after a couple minutes when the motor pauses and then restarts). Any insight on that? I hope that all makes sense 😅
My initial thought on that is the spin cycle shouldn’t start until the drum is pumped down and as empty as possible. There should be a delay otherwise it’ll start spinning with too much water in drum straining motor and transmission.
Matt, attempting the same fix, the spring came off mine too and I can’t figure out how it’s supposed to attach, if you remember the correct positioning please let me know!
Oh man, that spring is so tricky! I remember it took me a couple tries to get it right but I couldn’t tell you how I did it!

Hi Matt, and thank you ...trying to repair my timer in France on an American made Whirlpool...it doesn't start and I found a miniature black piece that was perhaps of the small plastic black crossbar that is inside of the timer. After cleaning the contacts I will try to open the back as you did. The starter is not engaging, so the machine doesn't turn on. Any suggestions? Thanks again!
If the timer is turning but not starting it’s either points or motor capacitor

My washer filled with water, then stopped working. I can hear a "buzz" when I pull the knob out so I assume its getting power.....any suggestions....(Wish my timer was this simple)....

how long would you say the contacts last after filing them?
It’s still going strong. Depends on how badly burnt they are. Usually they are coated in silver. Once that is gone they won’t last long.

I should send my timer to cause we have the Same washing machine and i cell have so much laundry 🧺 I need my machine back I replaced the door latch cleaned the reservoir bowel out cleaned the pump I dusted it and I really need help and I don’t wanna break my timer no more theny it maybe I’m not good like you
Man, great video. However, how in the name of Zeus's Butt Hole did you get that tiny little spring back on? I popped mine off but have zero idea how it goes back on.
If the points are burned from arcing you probably can't fix it.
