      compressors shouldn't be connected like that. they need an insert point, not an aux send. compression should be applied to the whole signal. that's why you will not see a wet dry knob on a compressor. sadly there is no insert point on the L12. nothing stopping you from using the headphone mix to send the full signal to a compressor while muting the original uncompressed mic input for the main mix. then the return from the compressor can go into a brand new channel which you can send to the main mix (but, obviously muted on that headphone mix). one thing to remember though is the microphone input on a channel will be model, but the headphones mix jacks are stereo (TRS). so if you want to keep the mono signal (which you should) when you plug in to the headphones jack, there are two distinct 'clicks.' the first one is mono, but plug it in all the way and get the two clicks and you'll be getting stereo... and in the case of a microphone signal, that just means the signal going to the outboard gear will be halvedb and your noise floor will increase

Actually I won't release more tutorials on the L12, because I don't have anymore unknown stuff to add. 1 con about the L12 is the missing option to record more than 1 take to a track without loosing the previous recording in standalone usage. Since the zoom has headphone / monitor outputs that can be mixed differently from the master, it is possible to send my machines into the zoom, recording them individually, then exit the headphones, go through the kaosspad and re-enter the stereo channel and record in unison. also all processed, without going into feedback? thank you.

    Hello, this is exactly what I am looking for. But it doesn’t work for me. The wet signal doesn’t sound right (I have it going through a guitar phaser pedal). Also, if I turn up the wet signal track on the master, it distorts immediately (like I am about to blow my speakers). I was have tracked bands in pro studios before so using auxes and outboard effects is normally easy stuff for me.
    As a test, unplugged the balanced cable out of E and plugged it into the output jack of a simple music player, with the output of my phaser going onto the livetrak. It sounds fine. But when I connect it back to the E headphone out I get the problem I originally stated.

    If you're looking to use in ear monitors, avoid the Zoom L-12. It's not possible to set up separate EQ settings for the in ear monitor mixes vs the main master mix. This is an extremely poor oversight by Zoom. I hope they release a firmware update to address this. I'm looking to sell my L-12 and get something better for this reason. They advertise it on the premise you can set up 5 separate headphone/in ear monitor mixes, but it's next to useless if you can't have different EQ settings on each track in the monitor mixes than the main mix.

    • @KoolteethDeBlog
      @KoolteethDeBlog  Před rokem +1

      Yeah, there are some disadvantages with the L12. I do think there won't be anymore firmware updates, sadly.

    • @nickloss2377
      @nickloss2377 Před rokem

      you're mistaken. the L12 has five monitor mixes that allows you to have independent settings of EQ and the onboard EFX engine. I think maybe the factory firmware didn't allow this but the first thing you should do is update the firmware to 2.0. you can use them for any or monitors or stage / floor wedges. you can even route the signal through outboard gear and back into an open channel giving you in essence 5 AUX sends.

    • @neilkendall5499
      @neilkendall5499 Před rokem

      @@nickloss2377 In response to your reply, first of all the 'monitor outs' are HEADPHONE outputs NOT line/aux outputs, so they're not suitable for connecting to wedge monitors or a wireless in ear monitor transmitter as they are the wrong impedance. Plus they're stereo, not mono outs. They NOT proper AUX outs like you'd get a better, more expensive mixer. You're therefore going to run into issues if you try to connect them directly to wedges. The more expensive Zoom L-20 address this issue by having a switch on each monitor output that allows you to change each monitor out from a headphone output to a line output so you can connect to wedges, but the Zoom L-12 is NOT suitable for this.
      As for the EQ, you CANNOT EQ the 5 headphones mixe differently to the main master mix. Try it for yourself. It does NOT work. You can have different mix levels etc in each 'monitor mix', but the EQ settings simply default back to the same as the main master output. Sorry to break it to you, but that's the truth.
      The Zoom L-12 is ok for recording and rehearsals with headphones, but it is NOT a good live mixer for a proper band for the reasons I listed above. I used to kid myself too until I realised the limitations. I sold my L-12 and upgraded to a Behringer XR-18 tablet controlled digital mixer, which is not that much more expensive than the L-12 but runs circles round it.

    • @nickloss2377
      @nickloss2377 Před 5 měsíci

      sorry for the late reply.. I don't usually get notifications from youtube. number one the five headphone mixes can be routed via the right breakout cable. and no, I'm not talking about a stereo TRS to 2x mono TS cables (which is often called a Y- cable, but is the equivalent to a generic insert cable..). I didn't go into detail because the comment did not require details. I said it could be used. what you need is a proper splitter making use of a resistor network in one of the splits. With this, and if course a DI to take care of the impedance differential, you can easily power stage wedges.. route that signal to a DJ mixer for use in their separate DJ monitor input. or you could route to outboard gear, then back into an unused channel on the zoom...
      also, maybe you sold it before getting more experience on it, because I am easily able to get unique monitor mixes with separate eqs, and efx from the master mix. there is actually a button on those monitor mixes that you press down and it defaults to the master mix.. that should tell you that when it's depressed, obviously it's not going to be getting the same Master mix.. it's telling you that it's getting a separate mix from the master..
      there are a few things I don't like about this mixer.. namely being it's pro tool connectability seems to be wonky for me. the lack of a phase invert button making it necessary for yet another accessory inline with the mic when dealing with multiple mics. Lack of digital (AES or SPDIF) master output which would make it so much easier when linking to multiple mixers or a FOH DSP/matrix.
      Also the choice of metering is bullshit. I'm color blind and I think their choice of green and reds are just a low blow for all colour vision deficient audio engineers.
      it's still a functional mixer.. you don't have to be an audio engineer to think of workarounds from their limitations. but all the limitations you've listed are easily addressed with just a little bit of research and experience.
      this is a great mixer to get you through in a pinch.. it's great backup to my Presonus SL32SX.
      PS: I don't think I've ever heard someone say that they have "upgraded" to anything made by Behringer... no offense but you might not want to repeat that statement to audio engineers! you should check out the Yamaha DM3. not much more expensive than the L20. lower Channel counts but it has a nice big digital display for people to easily understand what they're doing

    • @neilkendall5499

      @@nickloss2377 Sorry but many professional musicians use the Behringer XR series of mixers - these are in no way 'budget' mixers, they are serious, pro level pieces of kit. Don't be fooled by the Behringer name or confuse the XR mixers with their lower end stuff. I upgraded to an XR18 over a year ago and sold the Zoom. The XR18 etc runs circles round the Zoom L-12 in terms of features and sound quality. It was more effects (plus up to 4 simultaneously), proper aux outs with customisable mixes for IEMs or wedge monitors and the main PA speakers, 18 channel USB interface, full MIDI control and a whole range of other features that the Zoom mixers just do not have (even the Zoom L-20 is nowhere near as feature rich as the XR18). I think the Zoom LiveTrak mixers are fine for basic level use - recording, jamming through headphones etc - but for proper live use they can't compete with the XR18 etc. I not sure you can have separate EQ settings on each headphone mix on the L-12, only stuff like levels, panning etc I believe. But it's a whole load of hassle having to use different types of connectors to convert headphone outs to line outs. But it depends what you're using it for. The L-12 is fine for home use, perfectly fine. If you need more features, the XR series of mixers is the next logical and affordable upgrade.
